The Safe Way To Take Supplements

Nutritional supplements are a good idea if you have certain deficiencies in your diet. It can be a struggle to get everything you need in your diet and topping up levels of vital nutrients can help you to stay healthy. But that doesn’t mean you should go taking anything and everything that you can find on the supermarket shelves. If you rush into things you could end up doing yourself more harm than good. These are the steps you should take before deciding to take any kind of supplements.

Do You Need It?

Taking supplements that you don’t need is more dangerous than people think. It’s a common misconception that you can’t have too much of a good thing when it comes to vitamins and minerals. Overloading on certain nutrients can have a damaging effect on your health so before you start taking anything, you need to work out whether you actually need it or not. If you think that you do, it’s best to go and check with your doctor and they will be able to tell you for sure and give you advice on dosages.

It’s Only A Temporary Solution

When you start on a new supplement, don’t think of it as a quick fix. Instead, you should think of it as a temporary measure. In the long term, you should be looking to change your diet so that you get everything that you need. Otherwise, you’ll end up being dependent on the supplements for life.

Do Your Research

There are so many different brands on the market so you need to find out which ones are the best. There should be a lot of research already out there so look through it to find the ones that are tried and tested. For example, AlgaeCal calcium supplement studies have proven that the benefits are there and there aren’t any major negatives. If you chose something untested over this, then you’re putting yourself at risk because you don’t know what you’re taking.

Your doctor is another good source as they will have a good idea of what works and what is safe. Always consult them before taking anything and they will tell you whether it is ok or not.

Start Slowly

Even though you’ve done your research, everybody reacts differently to supplements and you don’t know whether you are going to have any side effects or not. The best way to deal with this is to start off slowly. Begin by taking a child’s dosage for a week or so and be aware of any changes. If you see any negative effects then stop taking them immediately. If everything is ok after the first week then you can start gradually increasing the dosage.

Take With Food  

Whenever you take any kinds of supplement, you should be taking it with food. This ensures that it absorbs effectively and that you don’t encounter any stomach upsets from taking it. Certain drugs will specifically say that you shouldn’t take them with food, but this is quite rare. As a general rule, make sure you have read all of the directions on the bottle before you do anything.

  1. Hi Ellen! I fully agree! We always hold supplements in such high regard, but you have raised a very important point that taking supplements that we do not need may sometimes do more harm than good. Thanks for highlighting that and sharing with us :)
