5 Ways To Make Your Home Minimalist

What is minimalism? It is a way of styling your home in a minimal way, almost barebones without it look empty. The art style actually originated post world war 2, however in recent years it has crept into home decor and took the modern world by storm. Minimalism is often associated with futuristic looks, and as technology advances it could never be more appropriate! So here are the best 5 ways to make your home have a minimalist style.

Monochromatic Paints

Minimalist styles are often made so because of their colour. Color gives a room character and tone, but if we are going for a minimalist look we need to eliminate this! Minimalism is about having as little going on as possible, which monochromatic paints are perfect at doing. Monochromatic is a posh world for anything that is of the same color, however it is more commonly used to refer to anything that is a shade of black or white. You can buy paints like this from companies like Behr, they sell a wide range of different paints which which surely suit your needs! Be mindful that once the paint is down, you need to make sure that all the other rooms are painted in exactly the same color, this reduces variation and gives you the minimalist look you’re after!

De-clutter

As just covered, part of minimalism is having very little variation. This is why it’s also very important to de-clutter your areas if you want to achieve this look! Clutter can be anything from candles to cushions, anything that does not have to be there, shouldn’t. This contributes to the look because there is much less going on in any given room, giving it that barebones feel that we are after. However, a lot of us do have things that we like about our home, small things that we feel like we still need, so when de-cluttering don’t forget that you can keep these things! Even if you can’t find a place to put it, you don’t have to bin it; companies like Home Depot sell containment units for you to have at home, perfect for keeping those precious ornaments

Uniformed Furniture

Arguably the most important part about having a minimalist home is the furniture. Livingroom furniture plays a very important part in dictating the look and feel of your house! This is because they are the most functional things within your house, meaning that they serve as focal points and therefore mood setters. This is why it’s incredibly important to really nail your furniture, and you should be trying to make it uniformed. By uniformed, we mean that the furniture is as similar as it can be, the same colors, styling, size, that kind of thing. By doing this, you remove the variation that ruins a minimalist look, therefore giving the room the look you want! It’s often very advisable to buy sets of furniture to make sure that they’re all identical in terms of style. It’s also important to note that your furniture should be a very similar, if not the same, color to your walls. This gives a lovely synchronized feel to your home, one that other interior decor styles are not capable of pulling off! Once you have your new furniture, make sure to put it in the right place. Minimalism does not have any set rules when it comes to furniture placement other than it being perpendicular to a wall, so as long as you do that then you’re set to create the perfect look!

Large Rooms

This is a similar concept to the de-cluttering one, just on a larger scale. A lot of minimalist house designs you will see will have large, open plan kitchens, big living rooms all full of space, and it’s important you try to mimic this. Restructuring your house plan is an incredibly large task, so  only do this if you have enough time and money behind you! Walls make houses cluttered and smaller by taking up surface area that they are grounded upon, so knocking out almost all the walls in your house to create 2 or 3 large rooms depending upon the size of your house is a must do if you’re doing big renovations and trying to go for this look. As covered before, this reduces the variation of your house, by having less rooms you have less areas of difference, making everything much more orderly and minimal. Due to the technical difficulty of this task, it is very advisable to hire a floor plan designer to aid you in your work. Designing a floor plan yourself is very hard to do well if you have never done it before, and since you’re putting so much money and effort into it, you should really do it justice by getting the right plan first!
Lighting

A much smaller issue than the last, but still a point of importance. Lighting, along with paint, dictates the tone of a room. Lighting on it’s own does not achieve a lot, but it serves to amplify effects that are already there. Getting the right lighting is very important because it can either significantly boost, or reduce, the minimalist look of your home. You’ll want to go for something that shines a plain light within an either monochromatic or metal casing. Metals work very well with minimalist styles, so don’t forget to include them if you like them! You can buy a plethora of different lights here, just find one that suits you!

So there you have the best 5 ways to make your home more minimalist! It is very important to note that to fully achieve the minimalist look, you will most likely have to do all of these things! However if you’re looking to go for just a slight minimalist look, then any of these will suit your needs, just make sure that you go for the right one for you without ruining the current styling of your home. 1. De-cluttering is my biggest downfall! Even when I try to make my rooms look nice, stuff is just jammed in baskets in the closets ;) I love your paint suggestions, too!
