The Secret To Being A Great Host

Being a host is great. There’s no better feeling than sending everybody home with full bellies and a smile on their faces. But it can be a struggle to entertain people at home if you don’t have a good space for it. In a crowded house, space is a commodity, and you don’t want your guests feeling cramped or uncomfortable. Even with limited space, it’s possible to create a great entertaining area that will cater for many occasions, it just takes a bit of clever design. Here are the main things to consider when planning your entertaining space.

Don’t Overcrowd It
It might be tempting to put lots of things into a room that you think would be good for entertaining. Filling it with a mini fridge, sink and a drinks cabinet would be perfect for a cocktail party, but when you come to use it for something else, you’ll have limited room to play with. If you want to create a versatile room that is fit for lots of activities, you need to keep it simple. If you don’t, it will end up being a great space for a few certain events, but not much else.
This applies to the decor as well. Painting it in bright colors would work well for parties, but it could get a bit overwhelming if you want a more relaxing, low-key affair. Instead, go for fairly neutral colors that are suitable for any situation. You can change the mood of the room using lighting, we’ll come back to that later.
Furniture is going to take up the lion’s share of the space so don’t go overboard. Pick a few nicer pieces that are multi-purpose instead of trying to cram everything in. A table is a must because you can use it for eating, socializing, playing games, and much more. A foldaway table is ideal because it gives you a big enough area for dinner parties, but if you need to open up the room a bit, you can just fold it away.
You could put a sofa in for comfort, although you won’t be able to use it for much else. If you put in some good- quality dining chairs then people can use them for dining, and they will still be comfortable enough for relaxing in later.
Never underestimate the power of good lighting. It can completely transform the vibe of a room in seconds. This is how you are going to adapt your entertaining space to fit whatever evening you may have planned. Natural light is important, especially for any summer events. When you are choosing the room in the first place, try to avoid any rooms that don’t get much sunlight.
Once the sun goes down, you are free to play with the lighting. For parties and more lively events, use brighter lighting and even experiment with different colored bulbs. For a quieter gathering, like a dinner party, put a dimmer switch in so you can lower the lights a little. Alternatively, use lamps and fairy lights to create an ambient environment for your guests.
