Don't Move Home Before Reading Our Essential Guide

When you are thinking about moving home, there are a lot of things for you to consider. For starters, you need to think about the size of the property. You don’t want to move somewhere too large when you're moving alone, and you don’t want to move into somewhere small and cramped if you have a family to consider. However, while size does matter, there are other things you need to think about before making an offer.

Buy or rent

While many people prefer to buy to get a step on the property ladder, you need to think about your personal situation. Are you likely to relocate in the next twelve months? For example, your career or relationship status may change. There are some fantastic luxury apartments for rent, so you don’t have to give up on the comfort of having your own home. However, should you be laying down your roots, then buying may be more cost-effective. You will need to pay a mortgage, but unlike rent, there will be an end date.

Consider the location

Again, this is down to your situation. You may want to move near to your work, or to your children’s schools. Being close to a town center may be advantageous, but you could move to the outskirts if there is a decent public transport system. There is a lot to consider when it comes to location, and it will also depend on your budget. However, you can do your research, and tour the area, before you come to a decision.

Check out the neighborhood

While you can’t choose your neighbors, you can still do some research and check out
the neighborhood. You might want to avoid areas where there are high crime rates, no matter how cheap the housing. You can often tell how good the neighbors are by looking at the state of their property, or listening for noise next door when you view possible accommodation.

Safety is another important consideration. Can people see directly into the house from the inside? Are your children safe from traffic on the roads outside? Are the streets clean from litter? You need to visit the neighborhood, and take into account anything that might cause you problems down the line.

Look on the inside

For starters, check the house has the right number of rooms for your needs. You may want a study or a child’s playroom for example, so consider whether the house will be practical. You should also ensure the property has been well-maintained, so call in a professional to give the house a once over if you are unsure. Estate agents and landlords are particularly good at covering over the cracks, so give the house a thorough inspection before you choose to move in.

You will probably have some great interior design ideas of your own, so don’t be put off by the decoration currently inside. The house will only become a home when you move in and add your personal touches.

We hope our advice helped. Whatever you decide, good luck in your new home!
