One of the things that a lot of dog owners struggle with is the idea of being able to take any kind of vacation or to travel to new places at all. After all, it can often seem as though you're stuck with a pretty impossible choice: you either leave your furry friend with someone else or you deal with the stress of taking them with you. Of course, there are a plenty of dogs who simply aren't able to deal with separation well at all, this is especially true for rescue dogs, which means that travelling with them might be your only option. Here are a few things that you can do to make travelling with your pooch just a little bit easier.

Do your research

Of course, the very first thing that you need to make sure before travelling with your dog is that the place that you're travelling to actually allows them in the first place. The last thing you want is to drive for several hours only to reach your destination and see the dreads "no dogs allowed" sign. There are plenty of places you can look online to find the best possible dog-friendly vacation sites and destinations so that they're not only welcome but that they'll have other pooches to play with as well.

Transport them safely

Being able to safely and comfortably transport your dog is going to be a pretty high priority for a lot of people. Many dogs get stressed or over excited while travelling and can up putting themselves and you in danger. The last thing you want is an excitable pup jumping around in the car while you're driving or taking any other transport. It's a good idea to find a pet carrier where they can be safe, secure, and comfortable. Here's a list of some of the best pet carriers around. That way you can be sure that you're finding the very best one possible for your furry friend.

Make them feel comfortable

The reality of travelling is that it might be exciting for you, but it can be the cause of a lot of stress and anxiety for a dog. All of the new sights, sounds, and smells can be pretty overwhelming for them. Make sure that you do everything you can to keep them feeling calm and comfortable. Pack things that smell like home, whether it's their favourite toy or their blanket. And keep a stash of treats nearby to help them feel better if it all starts to get a bit too much for them at any point.

It's easy to feel as though you can't get out and live your life the way you want when you have to arrange things around your dog. But there are always workarounds to just about any situation. Of course, it's important to remember the commitment that you signed up for when you adopted them as well. A dog is for life, not just for when it's convenient for you.
