How to Throw a Baby Shower Without Spending a Dime

Inviting a new baby into the world is cause for celebration. However, the responsibility for throwing the perfect shower often falls on friends or relatives of the expectant parents, bringing stress and budgeting woes into an otherwise joyous occasion.

If you’ve been tasked with hosting a baby shower, you’re probably wondering how you’ll create a memorable occasion and keep your guests entertained without leaving yourself penniless. Luckily, it is possible to through a modest yet memorable baby shower without spending a dime, and here’s how.

Location

Rather than splashing out on an expensive venue, host your baby shower at home or in a public space. A garden or park is perfect if you can pretty much guarantee the weather, but you’ll need to have a backup plan in case of rain. Ask friends and family members if they have a pop-up gazebo you can borrow, or better yet, a garden with coverage.

Food and Drink

Forget paying caters to provide food for your guests: this can be incredibly costly, so embrace your inner hostess and create your own menu instead. You don’t have to cook up a feast – some simple buffet food should cut it. In addition, you could ask everyone to bring either a drink (preferably non-alcoholic, so the expectant mother doesn’t feel left out) or dessert. With any luck, you’ll end up with a lovely, homemade spread for your guests to tuck into.

Invitations and Decorations

Invitations are one of the easiest items to check off your to-do list, and you don’t have to spend a dime to make them look professional. Yes, you can make them yourself, but if you’re worried that your crafting skills won’t cut it, you can find free printable baby shower invitations online instead. For decorations, look at Pinterest tutorials online for inspiration or create a garland using photographs of the parents-to-be. If you’re hosting an outdoor event, you can use natural elements like flowers and plants to jazz up the decor. You could also look for free printable decorations online, such as table cards, banners, and posters.

Entertainment

Forget fancy entertainment – this isn’t a wedding, and no one needs a brass band or violinist to entertain them. Create a playlist of current tunes and plug your smartphone or iPod into a set of speakers, and that will keep people talking and dancing for as long as you want them to stay. You can also find ideas for fun baby shower games online.

Favors

No one comes to a baby shower expecting favors to take home, but if you must have them, keep it simple. Plants make the perfect, budget-friendly favors, as they will continue to flourish long after the event. All you’ll need are some seeds and enough pots for each guest. You can create homemade plant pots out of old food tins covered in decorative paper; alternatively, you could offer the guests seeds to plant at home to honor the new baby.
