Gardening Tips for Small Spaces

Gardening is a great hobby that provides you with a way to relax and fresh produce. The food you produce is cheaper and more nutritious than what you can buy in the store. There is also something rewarding about eating what you grow. If you live in an area with limited gardening space, don’t become frustrated. Here are some tips to help you garden no matter what your living situation is currently.

Keep it Simple

If you have limited space in which to garden, be sure to keep it simple. If you try to overcrowd your area with too many plants, then nothing will grow very well, and it will look overwhelming to the senses also. If you are looking for a visually pleasing garden, then repeat patterns of shape or color. Our eyes are drawn to patterns, and it will make your garden look intentional instead of overgrown.

Garden Beds

If you want to make every aspect of gardening a little easier, then consider growing your plants in garden beds instead of rows in a traditional garden. This saves space because you do not need to allow for the room to walk between the rows. It is also a good idea because it saves you time weeding and you do not have to bend over, which is easier on your back.

Vertical Growth

One way to save space is to grow a vertical garden. There are a lot of plants that can grow a trellis, which saves you a lot of space. Tomatoes, peas, beans, squash, pumpkins, and spinach can all be grown vertically. Vertical plants also are great for planting near other plants because they share space well.

Hydroponics

Another way to grow a garden with not a lot of space is hydroponics. This method of gardening takes up less space because it does not require the plants to have extensive root systems. The water and nutrients are fed directly to the plants so that you can fit more plants in a smaller area. These systems are great for indoor gardening because they do not require soil. Hydroponics gardening supplies are easy to use, even if you are a beginner.

Succession Planting

Another way to maximize your gardening space is to understand what plants work well together. Some plants can grow much closer than others. Pairing plants together that encourage the growth of the other means you can fit a wider variety of plants in a smaller area. Understanding the growing seasons for different plants will also make it possible to plant a continuous garden by replacing plants that are done growing with ones that can be grown in a later season.

Container Gardening

A lot of herbs and small vegetables can be grown in containers. This means that you can place them in areas that get a lot of sun but may not have a great place to plant in the ground. This is also an excellent idea for balcony gardening or gardening on patios or decks for apartments.
