I don't know about you but sleep is my main priority in life with my health. I can't function right without about 7 to 7 1/2 hours of sleep a night. Because of that, I prioritize getting a good night's sleep EVERY NIGHT! I am known to leave a function early simply because it's close to bed time. But sometimes I struggle to unwind before bed and over the years I've found ways to help with that so I wanted to share them today.
I stop eating after 6ish
If I eat too close to bedtime I can't fall asleep and I don't even feel tired. This was hard in the beginning but after I made it a priority, it became so easy and I realized I sleep better when I don't snack into the evening so the reward was always in the front of my mind when I got tempted to break that rule.
I drink magnesium
I mix a supplement called Calm into some water before bed and I don't just do it to relax. Since I run every other day, it actually helps my muscles not be so sore and stiff the next day. But the other benefit of it is that it helps me get sleepy and relax at night.
I take CBD
I love taking a CBD gummy right before bed. I swear I sleep much deeper than when I don't take it.
I scroll TikTok
I know they say to stay off your phone before bed but this actually helps me because I tend to find relaxing videos and ASMR videos and it helps me doze off. Many times I've fallen asleep in the middle of a video and quickly wake up and realize it's time to go back to the bedroom.
I keep my house cool
At bedtime the air conditioning (or heat) gets set so that the house is 67 or 68 degrees. This really helps me fall asleep and stay asleep. I don't wake up sweating like I do if I even keep it at 69 or 70. It may differ for you.
I have a fan in our bedroom year round
I always have a fan on and at first I thought it helped keep me cool but I think the sound of it helps give me a little white noise. I have noticed when the power goes out in the middle of the night and the fan stops it wakes me up. So if you don't want a fan running, you can also use the sound of white noise.
I wear a sleep mask
In order to not get distracted by any random lights or a glow from the clock or my phone, I wear a sleep mask. I think over time I became so used to feeling it on my face that I can't fall asleep without it now. When I struggle to fall asleep on rare occasions the sleep mask kind of helps me keep my eyes shut.
What do you do to fall asleep at night and unwind before bed?
