20 Things to Declutter in the Garage

Monday, August 25, 2025

The garage can end up being a catch all for a lot of things in our home if we aren't careful.  That's why I like to go through my garage at least twice a year to get rid of anything that we don't need or that shouldn't be in there. Whatever is left gets organized so it's easier to find.  Here's a list of 20 things to declutter in your garage.  Remember to remove everything in each category and sort through it to determine what to get rid of, what to move to be stored elsewhere if necessary, and then when you've decluttered that category you can decide how to store it.

Paint cans
Sports equipment
Yard games
Yard toys
Garden tools
Yard tools (leaf blowers, chainsaws, etc.)
Bags of soil or mulch
Fertilizers
Pest control supplies
Car cleaning supplies
Tools and toolboxes
Cleaning supplies
Home project supplies and leftover scraps
Outdoor toys for kids
Pool/beach items
Camping equipment (chairs, tents, cooking stoves)
Grill accessories
Empty boxes that need to be recycled
Hobby items like fishing equipment, workout equipment, etc.
Garden and yard decor (flags, statues, yard stakes, solar lighting)

Remember - you don't have to get rid of everything but your garage should be utilized to store things that you need to easily access. With certain things we don't use often, we store those in our attic space above the garage.  This way they don't take up valuable space but we have them in a designated location for safekeeping.

Storage ideas to save space and keep things nice and orderly include hanging holders to utilize wall and ceiling space, labeled plastic tubs and bins, and any other creative ways that work best for you and your space.
