It’s amazing how little you truly need to give a household its own aesthetic, or “vibe” even. That’s because homes often speak for themselves in major ways. Some people prefer to leave walls somewhat undecorated if there’s already an exposed material or if the feature has its own aesthetic impact. The floor, not necessarily the most attention-grabbing part of the room, will also decide how the place “looks,” serving as a sort of canvas that everything else is built on.

This suggests that sometimes, an interior decorative element can punch way above its weight, without necessarily seeming like a main priority. If you keep to the most impactful and simple, perhaps you can change the look of a room without a huge amount of expense to worry about.

In this post, we’re going to make that case, by suggesting the most underrated yet impactful household decorations to try:

Window Dressings

A window is already a focal point just by being there, but how it’s framed changes how the entire wall looks. Thankfully, it doesn’t always take layered textiles or a dozen panels, you could get a good effect with a well-shaped curtain rail, fabric that draws the eye as unique window dressings, or blinds that allow you to angle the natural light as you want it.

Shutters work the same way, they frame the light without adding visual noise on top of that. Until you design you may have forgotten how much wall space a window really takes up, so dressing it properly gives the room more balance.

Door Frame Decorations

People rarely look at a door frame and think there’s anything to be done with it, but there’s a reason older homes sometimes feel more characterful before anything’s added, and that’s partly down to small, fixed details like trim or moulding.

A clean frame with subtle detail or an arch above the opening changes how the doorway looks and adds something of a custom design only you could have decided on. It could be a painted edge that’s just a shade off the main wall colour, or some texture that separates the room just slightly. You don’t have to overdo it with the ornate aesthetic, but a little simple pattern can look pleasant.

Indoor Garden Features

If you allow plants in the space they shape the room, quite literally. A large potted tree in the right spot will direct where the eye goes, and trailing plants across shelves or archways will have a kind of motion and softness framing angular installations. Plants are common, but using them to frame in this way isn’t so much.

You can easily reorient them or angle them depending on the season or the needs of the plant, too. Snake plants are easy to take care of, for instance. But indoor wall gardens or mini-hanging baskets either side of shelves can look lovely. It’s a nice place to start, and may give you more utility in a space you’re trying to figure out. If anything, it will help it feel more fresh and vibrant.

With this advice, we hope you can feel more confident decorating, sometimes looking at the smaller and underrated elements.
