My 2024 Garden Summary

Wednesday, October 9, 2024

This was an exciting year for my garden. In years past I had a way too big and awkwardly shaped rectangle garden that was hard to maintain and reach around in.  This year we made a new longer bed that allowed me to walk around all sides of it to maintain my vegetables and it made SUCH a difference.  So I was excited to try new things in my garden and now I'm very excited to tell you how it all went, what I'll do different next year, and what I learned from this year's gardening experience.

A Final Garden Update for the 2018 Season

Tuesday, October 9, 2018

Well I hated this gardening season.  ABSOLUTELY DESPISED IT is a better way to put it.  May was rain rain rain and cool weather. June was a beautiful month until July hit and then we literally had more rainy days than sunny ones here in PA.  I'm not even exaggerating.  It makes me so angry just thinking about it.

So needless to say, my garden SUCKED! My zucchini plant had a somewhat good haul but then got watered down and died off pretty quickly.  My tomatoes all cracked and my peppers did good for about 1 week because there wasn't enough sun the entire season.

My lettuce had kicked butt for sure and the only thing I'm left with now is butternut squash which actually did really well.

Next year I'm doing everything the same and hoping the weather is much better.

How did your garden do this year?

A Garden Update [August]

Wednesday, August 8, 2018

Summer was crazy this year. It started out cooler then went right to rain rain rain. We had a few good weeks at the end of June and beginning of July before more rain rain rain.  The rain was great for the garden but a pain in the butt for me when it came to tending to my garden.

Life got so crazy busy I barely even picked my lettuce and most of it went to seed right away.

Now I've got my peppers beginning to turn red and my butternut squash is getting flowers on the vines.

I left my Kale in the garden but all of the Romaine lettuce is gone.

My Zucchini are obviously done for the season and I am pretty happy with how many I got.  I feel like next year I need to find a better container for them to grow in.

I can't wait to show you how my butternut squash do! I'm also going to plant some radishes and beets next month!

How did your garden do this Summer? Any tips for me with the zucchini?

Garden Updates for July

Well, the Summer heat has done my garden well it seems.  The lettuce just skyrocketed and I almost had too much which always makes me feel guilty.  I have been eating Caesar salads with my Romaine lettuce like it's my job lately.

My tomato plant shot up and has lots of little matos on it!

My pepper plants have some gorgeous fruits growing and seem very strong and healthy.

My butternut squash also came up and once the summer humidity is here (which it kind of already is) they will spread out even more and I can't wait for the squash to actually start growing come fall!

And then last but certainly not least my zucchini plants are kickin butt! I have gotten several healthy and generously sized zukes from them so far. I'm so proud.

My summer harvest is almost over though so soon it'll be time to start planting for Fall.

How is your garden looking so far?

A June Garden Update

Friday, June 1, 2018

May was a great month for growing in my garden! There was a lot of rain but also a lot of sun and it was the perfect combination.

Here are my zucchini plants.  I keep them in their own plastic tub because then it doesn't overtake my garden beds.

I have a cherry tomato plant and 3 sweet pepper plants. The one is kind of short so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong.  I bought these plants already started. The Zucchini was started from seed.

Then we have my yummy lettuce which will give me plenty of salads this summer! Romaine, spinach, and kale are growing and I did plant butternut squash in one of my beds as well but it's just beginning to sprout from seed.

How's your garden looking?

A Garden Update for May

So finally the weather seems to be staying consistenly warm which means it's garden time!

This year I'm keeping it a bit more simple.

I'm doing butternut squash in my big garden bed and lettuce in my small bed.  I'm also doing a tomato plant in a container, 2 zucchini plants in containers, and a few sweet pepper plants in containers.  This year is a wild one not just because of the weather but also because we are having a patio put in this month.  I can't wait to show you that when it's done!

Groundhogs destroyed the fence to my one bed last year so we double reinforced it this year.  James wants to redo my beds for next year so we'll see what he has in mind.

The lettuce was actually planted when the weather was still crappy and it's starting to sprout! Salads galore in a few weeks!

Our garden toad hasn't returned this year (yet) but maybe the patio will entice her to reappear.

Also we dug up the ground outside the screened in porch and put stones in.  Once the patio is done we will have some pavers down on the stone creating a path from the patio to the other side of the porch where the garden beds are!

We still have more to do and once the patio is in it'll look so good with other planting and landscaping stuff I do.  Luckily we were able to save money by using the stones we had put in the old garden beds where the patio will be.  We literally moved them shovel full by shovel full over to this new area.

I got all my flower pots for the patio ready too but I'm keeping them out front for now until it's in.

Check back next month for updates and hopefully new patio pics!!

How is your garden doing this year so far? And what are you planting?!

Garden Update [August]

Tuesday, August 15, 2017

August has had fairly cooler weather which is a surprise but it seems to have helped my veggies.  So here is my eggplant.   Already have some fruit forming!

My banana peppers are doing great as well I get about 15 a week between all of my plants!

 Yes! That's a butternut squash! I have a few!

My bell peppers also are doing great, I think because it hasn't been terriby hazy hot and humid at all this month yet. I've read that intense heat like we normally have can make them pause their growth for a bit.

 More Banana Peppers!
So I'm an idiot and I accidentally cut off the top of my one tomato plant a long time ago.  But I still get some tomatoes from it. The one on the right is Roma Tomatoes.   They've been coming in nicely.
I replanted some Kale and Caesar in the small garden bed so I can have some fall salads!

How are your gardens doing? Any tips for mine? I think I had cucumber beetles on my zucchini plants and they haven't been producing any more fruit the past few days. :(

My July Garden Update

Tuesday, July 11, 2017

It's July and my garden is in full bloom.  I mean, this time I did things much better and I'm harvesting much more than last year!
I have 2 sweet banana peppers planted in one of my garden beds.  They started from seed so they are a bit behind the rest.
The lettuce is amazing.  Each week I have enough for a large salad for lunch every single day!
I even have 2 eggplants that are coming in nicely in my one garden bed!
I am so proud of my zucchini plants this year. I decided to do them in plastic tubs so they had much more room and I could move them around if need be.

I've harvested at least half a dozen zucchini from them so far!

So far, I'm getting lettuce, banana peppers, and the zucchini!
My butternut squash are coming in beautifully!
Here are my potted pepper plants. It's pretty much sweet bell and banana.
My tomato plants started giving me ripened tomatoes! Yay!
Here's my banana pepper kickin' butt!

And here's an up close of my romaine lettuce.

Check back next month for another update! Hopefully the humidity of July and August don't hurt my garden too much.
How are your gardens doing?
