If you have a senior in your life who you care about, chances are you worry about them sometimes. As they get older, they often find doing the basic things of life more difficult and you can’t always be there to ensure they’re okay, and sometimes they don’t even want you fussing over them, right? Maintaining their independence is often very important to seniors, and rightly so, but how do you help them achieve that while also ensuring they’re safe and helping where you can?
Visit them often
Visiting your senior often and doing things with them, whether it’s shopping at the grocery store, going for a walk or seeing a movie, will not only enable you to keep an eye on them to see how they are doing, but it will also help them to get out and about more confidently because you are there to help them and the more they do get out and about the more confident they will be to keep that up even when you aren’t there.
Get them connected
Technology is a huge help when it comes to seniors retaining their independence. For example, if they have a smart phone, they can get out and about knowing tha they can video call you or pull up a map if they get lost. Then, there are medical alert devices that can alert the emergency services, and their loved ones, if they fall or have some kind of medical emergency. If you can convince your seniors to use these devices, then you and they will have much more freedom and peace of mind.
Look for community groups
Most communities have groups especially for seniors where they can get together and chat over coffee or maybe learn a new hobby or two. There are even lunch and dinner clubs too. These are great places for seniors to attend because, not only will they be getting out meeting people, making new friends, but the other attendees and volunteers will notice quickly if they don;t turn up one day, and take steps to check they’re okay.
Consider a retirement living facility
Senior independent living options are definitely something you should consider your senior to look at because they allow them to live independently but in a community of other seniors and with all of their amenities, including chores and dinner, taken care of for them, and staff who can keep an eye on their wellbeing. It’s basically the best of both worlds. They're free to come and go and live as they like, but there is help there if they want or need it.
Safety proof their home
If they are staying in their own home, then doing some safety profiting, such as installing ramps, grab bars, security alarms and medical devices, is sensible. It will mean you, and they, don’t worry quite so much about them falling or getting hurt, which means they will be much more confident just living their day to day life.
If independence is important to them, help them achieve it!
