Simplify the Holidays

Tuesday, November 4, 2025

The holidays can be a hectic time of year no matter what they look like for a person but there are some ways that even that aspect of your life can be simplified.
Simplifying Holiday Plans
You don't have to do everything you have always done during the holidays.  Start exercising your own authority by saying no to certain things you're invited to. Stick to things that have importance to you like 1 or 2 holiday parties, attending a holiday musical as a tradition every year, and deciding to just choose one place to visit on the actual holiday itself. There's no sense in running around to make everyone else happy. You can alternate different at years at different houses too.

Simplifying Holiday Decor
Start getting rid of decor that you don't necessarily love.  And anything you haven't actually used in the last few years definitely is just taking up space in storage so clear it out.  Consider doing more minimal decor or choosing only simple festive additions like making your own pine garland, etc.

Simplifying Holiday Meals
You don't have to eat everything that's offered and you don't have to make everything that pops into your head either. Be more mindful when choosing how many dishes to make for a meal you host, and be very mindful of opting for a healthier side dish to bring if someone else is hosting.

Simplifying Holiday Spending and Gifts
Only ask for what you need or will use.  Only buy something someone will use or something they need. Focus on experiences more than physical gifts.  Consumables are great but knick knacks tend to just collect dust and add to the clutter of a home.  Set a budget for each person on your list and stick to it. Going overboard just gives into the whole consumerism thing.

With the holidays just around the corner, now is the time to reframe how you think about them.
