A Step-by-Step Guide to Declutter Your Kitchen

Your kitchen is likely the most chaotic room in the house.  It's the central hub where everyone gathers to chat, it's usually the first place we go when we get home, and it's the most common place for clutter.  This is because we put all kinds of things in there, not just kitchen stuff.  Some people have mail and papers, others have books stored on shelves.  Seriously, I've seen it all.

Since it's used so often, it sure would be nice if it didn't feel so messy and cluttered all the time, right?
This step-by-step guide to declutter your kitchen will lay out everything you need to do so you can get it done in a day or a weekend!

Purging the Things You Own Too Many Of

Wednesday, September 13, 2017

We are all guilty of excessive stuff.   I definitely was until I KonMari'd my entire life and home.  Most of us don't even realize how much we have until we sit down and gather all the things in a certain category.  So whether you just don't have time to KonMari yet or you don't know where to start - I'm going to help you out today.

So It's A New Year and You Want to Purge Your Stuff....

Friday, January 6, 2017

We are just one week into the new year and already I know that many of you have one big goal in mind for a fresh start.  To go through all your things and get rid of all that clutter and junk.

My closet tour post seemed like a really big hit so I decided to do a kitchen tour as well! As I said in my closet post, I'm going to be realistic and show you what my kitchen looks like all the time.  Everything is not perfectly neat and tidy.  Because I'm a real live human.  So while it is very tidy thanks to the KonMari Method of course, it still isn't perfect.

My Official Closet Tour

Monday, December 5, 2016

I am so obsessed with touring people's homes and closets through their social media and blogs so I figured it was probably time for me to do a tour of my own closet.

Now let me start off by saying that I'm not one of those people that's going to go hog wild and make sure everything is perfect straight, tidy, and beautiful.  That's just not realistic and I like to keep it real so everything you see in today's post is exactly how it looks all the time - every single day.  No exceptions.  That being said, I'm definitely a tidy person especially now that I've done the KonMari Method.

My Post-KonMari Kitchen & Bathrooms

Thursday, February 25, 2016

I wanted to make sure those that don't follow me on social media can still see the amazing way my life has been changed thanks to this method so I'm going to share it each week.   This week I'm featuring my kitchen and my bathrooms.  My kitchen has a lot of storage space but that doesn't mean I have to keep a lot of unnecessary things.

Excess toiletries go in the second bathroom's small closet.

My Post-KonMari Office

If you've been following my social media channels the past few weeks you have surely seen my photos of my post-KonMari home.   Each day I upload one photo from my home, sometimes it's a drawer or a closet, but all of them show how the KonMari Method has changed my life.

If you haven't heard of the KonMari Method it's an amazing process of tidying every aspect of your life to keep only what is practical and what brings you joy.  It was created by Marie Kondo and she details it in her books  The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and Spark Joy

So if you haven't heard about the KonMari Method than you need to read these posts and buy the book. Or just do some googling.  But basically it's a method developed by Marie Kondo to tidy your life and home and keep ONLY what brings you joy.

It's been a year since I completed this method and once you complete it you never have to go through it again in it's entirety.  As long as you maintain that lifestyle you are golden.  So here is how my life is post KonMari.

If you haven't seen my posts before, I'll briefly explain the KonMari Method.   I've done this twice so far to my closet and it's amazing.  The KonMari Method requires that you keep things that are useful and bring you joy.   It is highly recommended that you read the book but for those of you that refuse to read it or don't have the time - I figured I'd walk you through a way to clean out your closet using parts of the KonMari Method.

So You Want to Try The KonMari Method....

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

First I'd like to boast that I was on the KonMari train long before mainstream media made it go even more viral so I speak from a lot of experience when I give this advice.   So yea, I'm sure you have heard of the KonMari Method (KM for short) and you may be interested.   KonMari is named after Marie Kondo, the author of the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.   So if you are one of those people wanting to get started and you want to ask someone (me) all about it, this is what I have to say.

|Read The Book|
Seriously.... don't ask anyone what it is or how it works. It can not be explained without reading the book for yourself. It's an easy read. I read it in 2 days.   READ THE BOOK READ THE BOOK READ THE BOOOOOOOK!!!!   Everything is explained in full.  There are no shortcuts by googling or trying to read blog posts. Looking at pictures with the #KonMari hashtag for inspiration won't fully explain how people are doing what they are doing.  If there's one thing you do just read the damn book! You will NOT regret it. I promise you!

|Focus on what to Keep|
This is of course explained in the book, but if you already read the book just keep this in mind.   KonMari is not about purging or organizing.  It's about keeping ONLY what sparks joy.  Somethings are kept for practical reasons which is fine but of course in the long run they spark joy.  Plenty of people overthink it and then ask "Well why would I keep a first aid kit if it doesn't bring me joy and just makes me think of pain and injuries?" Well.... does it bring you joy to fix the injury up and feel better? Uhhh yea.   So don't get all huffy puffy thinking the concept is stupid and unrealistic. It works.   Just read the book and it explains it even more.

|Go by Category NOT by Room|
Once again, this is in the book but trust me it has to be done like this to work correctly.   If you round up all the office supplies at one time from every room it will work. If you don't you'll end up finding random office supplies here and there throughout other parts of your house and you'll end up keeping them just because they aren't part of the category you are working on now.

|Start with Your Closet|
She says this in the book but trust me, it's the easiest way to start and it gets you so motivated for the rest of the process.  If you feel overwhelmed just thinking about what to KM in your entire house, stop!! Just do your closet and clothing first so you can see how the process really works.

|Don't Look Back|
Don't think about the items that don't bring you joy. You'll start second guessing yourself. If at the time you are unsure and you think something brings you joy, then okay, keep it. If it stops bringing you joy someday you will be able to discard it.

|Don't Make it about Money|
It's great to get extra money for things but if you make that the whole point it'll take forever and you won't end up finishing the process because you'll be exhausted and discouraged from all the work you have to do to try to sell every single little knick knack and article of clothing.   If you have some high end designer brands of clothing go ahead and try to get some cash for it. Otherwise, donate donate donate.

|Don't Try to Konvert|
Just because you love this method doesn't mean your spouse or children will. Do it for yourself first. Don't try to push it on anyone else. Respect what is theirs and only do your items.

|Accept that KM is Life Changing|
Your house will look and feel different. Your body and soul will feel different. Your shopping habits will completely change. The things you let in your life and the things you put back on the shelves are all part of KM.  Don't laugh at it or mock it.  Follow the book and fold things how they should be folded.   You'll see how good it feels. Trust me.

The Many Benefits of the KonMari Method + Some Tips

Monday, April 20, 2015

Over the past few weeks I've been blogging about my life-changing experience with The KonMari Method of Tidying.   Marie Kondo's book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is an amazing read. The KonMari Method suggests that we only keep those things that bring us joy.   It requires you to evaluate every aspect and item of your life one at a time.   I wrote about how I did this with my wardrobe and my other possessions.

There are many benefits of The KonMari Method so I wanted to break them down and show you how my life is different.

1 | I have more energy.
She even said this in her book, and I totally believe it now.   My mind and spirit don't feel cluttered and overwhelmed EVER.  No matter what's going on around me I can come into my room, sit down and meditate and decompress from a long day.  I feel like my life is in order.

2| I have less stress.
I have not once had to rush to get something or find something since I KonMari'd all of my possessions.   In fact, the whole idea of not having to declutter and re-organize on a regular basis keeps my mind very clear. Whenever a task comes up, I can do it right away. When I open my mail I can tend to each item immediately. I don't feel the need to toss it away and deal with it later.

3 | I have more time.
Just as she said in the book, you will have more time to do things you love.  I suddenly have more free nights after work so it's easy for me to see my friends and family more often.   I was afraid I would be bored but nope, I am not bored at all.  In fact I've taken up more fun crafting type hobbies.  I have several mini personal projects that I have been able to enjoy these past few weeks.  My routine is so easy now! I come home, change clothes, put my bag away, make my lunch for the next day, and then maybe have 1 or 2 small items on my to do list and that's it.   I don't know why but I had so much more crap to worry about doing before all of this.

4 | I save money.
Since I don't go out and try to buy organizing products and solutions, and I instead use stuff I already have, I've noticed that I am not spending money as much.

5 | I am a smart shopper.
So the other day I went out to 4 different stores.  Along the way at each store I would pick up several items I wanted or thought I needed like special pens, desk accessories, etc. I thought these were things I really wanted. Then I noticed that I put EVERYTHING back and would leave the store. I ended up coming home empty handed. One specific example was several letter trays I wanted for my cubicle at work. I was just going to settle on a set I found at Staples and then I asked myself automatically if it brought me joy. It honestly didn't so I had no problem putting them back.  And I ended up finding some I really liked online and I had a gift card for the site.   It's amazing how I can resist impulse buys or purchases that I'm really not thrilled about.

6 | I have a closer bond with my possessions.
Laugh all you want but it's true. I love everything I own because I ONLY own things that I love.   And I truly believe in the power of positive energy.  In her book, Marie explains how she had this phone that she just loved and it worked for years and years even though it was outdated. When she finally got a new one, she thanked her old phone, and the second she set it down it died!  It's like once she released it, it's job was done!   Have you ever noticed how a house that is neglected without a family inside to love and enjoy it just starts disintegrating?  I have a great example of all of this with my Honda Civic. I LOVE my car. I honestly have a special bond with her and I would be devastated if something happened to her.   I love her o much not because she's paid off but because she is so reliable and aside from routine maintenance never gives me a problem. I know people with the exact same car as mine from the same year and their car is acting up left and right for no good reason.   Then I realized... it's because all these years I've loved her and when I drive her I enjoy her, and sometimes I even talk to her.   There is positive energy from me in my car, and that's why she is reliable, accident free, and enjoyable for me.   The more

Now I will say, reading blogs about KonMari will not allow you to do it properly yourself. I INSIST that you quickly read her book ( it took me 2 days) and then start KMing your life in the ways that suit you best.

I now understand why her book is titled the LIFE-CHANGING magic of tidying up. Once you do this, you will understand too.  Anyone can do it, even the laziest of people. I PROMISE YOU! YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS! My life is forever changed. I am SO HAPPY!

I do have some tips for anyone that decides to embrace the KonMari Method:

1 | Tackle items by category, NOT location.
So many people like to go by room when they do this with your house but when I did each category I followed the book and I rounded all the like items from every other room.  The lotion that I kept next to my vanity, the lotions in the bathroom, the lotions in my purse, etc.   Doing this made it easier to really eliminate the duplicates of so many possessions of mine.

2 | Use what you already have. I used to be a big fan of buying organizing products but I took Marie Kondo's advice and began to use things I already own like Apple product boxes, jewelry boxes, etc.  Surprisingly, I had everything I needed so I didn't have to go spend money on fancy shmancy organizing goods.

3 | Touch each item.
By touching each item you actually can feel if there is a joyous energy or not.   Looking at so many items in my closet everyday made me *think* I should keep them, but the second I picked up and held each one I was able to say "Nah, I never wear this because it always looks funny, so this DOESN'T bring me joy."

4 | Take your time.
It's not a race. It took me a few weeks but it can take other people a few months.  Everyone is different. Enjoy the journey.

5 | Emotions are okay.
I felt so distraught on some days because I was just drained from either parting with things, trying to touch everything, or just the entire fact that this was an ongoing project.   It's okay to get emotional. There are plenty of KonMari Facebook groups out there for support

Have you tried this method or do you plan to?

I Can Now Account For Every Possession I Own

Monday, April 13, 2015

So for those of you that don't know, I'm temporarily living at my parents' house where I grew up.   I will be getting a house this year but until then I've been living out of storage for nearly 2 years now.  That didn't stop me from applying the KonMari method to EVERYTHING I own in storage in the basement.

The problem is that what I was doing now is anytime I got a new item, say a mug, I would just shove it in the "kitchen" boxes in the basement.   Overtime I accrued plenty of things I didn't need or that I already had duplicates of.  So I tackled everything in one weekend.  I unpacked everything, and purged items that didn't bring me joy.

Books & DVDs: I didn't have too many of those to begin with because a couple years back when I decided to really embrace minimalism, I downsized my collection.  Also, I noticed that it was pure hell trying to move houses with so many books.   So all of the books I own fit in one tiny box, and all of the DVDs I own (including full seasons of my favorite shows on DVD) fit into a second box.  That's it!   Isn't that impressive?

Holiday Stuff: I downsized to have only 2 bins of holiday items which includes ornaments for my tree.  I also have one bin for gift bags, tissue paper, bows, etc.  There were some really ugly decorations that I got rid of and I honestly have no idea why I held onto them for so long. I noticed that most of us are trained to keep things because last time we went through them we kept them.   Literally, I was so used to just putting things back away into a box or bin, that I didn't notice before if they brought me joy. But this time I questioned EVERYTHING.  There were plenty of things that I noticed I had kept simply because every time I moved or purged things, I liked to do the same thing with each item. I just got into the habit or packing, storing, and keeping things.

Sentimental Items: This category was last, as Marie Kondo recommends because not only do you find things from this category along the way but it's also the most difficult.  It took me an entire day and 2 purges to get through all this.  My school papers and photos all fit in one bin now. I went through all of my school artwork and papers twice because the first time I kept things for silly reasons.   Then I got a binder and page protectors and I put much of it in the binder. I also tore out pages of magazines that I had saved for special personal reasons and I put those in sheet protectors. When I went through my photos I got rid of any duplicates that I didn't feel I needed to keep and I also got rid of any of those pointless photos that I took of a tree that made no sense.    It wasn't as hard as I thought.

I also have a second bin just for mementos from my past.  My American Girl Doll (Molly) and her different outfits, 2 snow globes from my mom, some Chihuahua stuffed animals and figurines, and a vanity set that belonged to my Grandma.   These things bring me joy.   I keep them in plastic bins for now because I know they will be safe.  Eventually when I have my own place, I may find a neat way to display them, especially the snow globes and vanity set.

I still have to go through lots of my old stuffed animals but I will do that soon enough. Honestly, I thought this process would be harder than it was.   Some of the items I had kept all these years did nothing for me. They really did not bring me joy.

I had some random bins in my room that had odds and ends or things that I frequently use like a lotion bottle, my extra business cards, a bag of chips, etc.  I decided to do away with it all. Instead, the lotion goes with the other lotions, the chips went to the kitchen, and my extra business cards went into my desk drawer.   Honestly, it won't kill me to have to take a few more steps to get something I need.  In fact, I could use the calorie burn of moving around more.

I had SO many boxes of things.  In the end I was able to downsize out of 10 boxes.  In fact, everything I have fits in plastic tubs.

And that's the junk pile of stuff that I discarded/donated/gave away.  It wasn't as hard as I thought because like I said before, I had purged much of my stuff a couple years back.  Still, there was tons of stuff to go through.

I literally know every single thing I own now and it is a great feeling.  Doing this whole process has helped me so much. I no longer wonder if I have something or if I should buy something at the store.  I actually KNOW now.

Next week I'll talk about the benefits of the KonMari Method.

Tidying + Organizing Beauty Products with the KonMari Method

Monday, April 6, 2015

I already showed you my closet after using the KonMari Method but what about all my beauty supplies and accessories?  Well.... without further ado...

So my excess beauty supplies... while I purged a lot of it, I kept plenty that not only brings me joy but is necessary for me as a blogger.   I will still go through and re-KM everything but this is where it stands after my first run through of KMing. I labeled the drawers all nice and simple.  Inside...

This is my drawer for sponges and brushes.

Here's my eye makeup and concealer/foundation.

Here's my eyelashes and mascaras.

These are fashion fixes aka foot items, shoe items, and bra items.

Here are my perfumes... and where I keep my purse holders and keychains.

And here are my sunglasses.

I have 2 little plastic bins for nail polishes and my Gel nail items.

Then I have a little plastic drawer set for the stuff I currently use on a daily basis.

Here is my vanity...

and that's my drawer with all my hair supplies.

For jewelry I display it all.  I cleaned out my armoire so I can give that away and have more floor space in my bedroom.

This is the plastic drawer set that I use for earrings.

I used little jewelry boxes that I already had.

Honestly, I love that I got rid of so much of the jewelry I never wore and the makeup I would NEVER wear.   It's so much easier for me to find stuff now.

I Tidied My Closet with The KonMari Method

Monday, March 30, 2015

So originally I saw a Facebook post from someone that said they had KonMari'd their filing system of papers. Intrigued, I googled "KonMari" and then immediately bought the book. I also was inspired by all the Instagram pics I saw when I searched for the hashtag.   I read it in 24 hours and began the process.  I highly recommend everyone read the book.

Basically, the KonMari method comes from Marie Kondo, who suggests that we only keep things that bring us joy.   She suggests a specific order to go through things like clothing first then books and magazines and then papers, etc.   You must put everything out in the open all together (coat closet, off season clothes, closet clothing, and drawer clothing) and hold each one by one.  When you hold it you ask yourself if it brings you joy.  Surprisingly, this was a fun process and I could not believe I was able to do it in a matter of hours!

So what was the result?   Well, I no longer have an off season wardrobe stored in bags under my bed.  All of my clothing fits in my closet (which isn't even a walk-in!) and in my main dresser.  I was able to get rid of SIX bags of clothes, which I donated.

I was seriously exhausted by the end of the day and I was a bit emotional when I dropped the clothing off at the local Community Aid.

I was so proud of my work.  Then I went to bed.

This is my entire closet. All seasons of clothing able to hang.  The first photo is the right side of my closet and the second is the left side.  I hang in this order: Dresses, skirts, jackets, sweatshirts, pants, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, 3-quarter length, short sleeve, and tank tops.

These are my drawers.  Left to right: Row 1 is work out clothes and pajamas.  Row 2 is jeans/pants and tank tops/layering shirts.  Row 3 is tshirts/scarves/belts/leggings and socks.   I didn't take a photo of my undies drawer though.  :)

When I woke up the first thing that crossed my mind was "Wow, I have everything in my closet now and there's still so much space! "  I had a different energy to me.  All morning I felt energized and less stressed.  Could it be that having so much stuff even when it was out of sight was blocking my good energy?   I believe it now!
It's amazing how organized and in order your entire life feels when everything you own is in it's place and you only own and hang on to the stuff you absolutely love.

But that's not all...I'm KMing everything else too and I'll have more posts about those including linen closet, beauty supplies, photos, papers, etc.

Have you ever heard of this method?  How do you feel about your current organizing/tidying methods?
