How I Minimized My Jewelry Collection

While doing a declutter challenge earlier this year, one of the ways I was able to let go of a large number of items was by going through my jewelry collection. I’m not even a big jewelry person and generally only wear it when I’m not at home so that already means it’s not everyday. I would say I got rid of 75% of my jewelry. How did I do it? Well…
I had to be very picky. Right off the bat I had way too many earrings, most that I don’t wear. I began asking myself why I don’t wear them. Most of the time it was because it hurts my ears or is too heavy. Some of it was even broken. That made it much easier to make progress and motivate me for the rest of the items.

Bracelets was tough and I do love wearing layers upon layers of bracelets. They are my favorite type of jewelry because they’re usually easy to get on and off. So for me, I looked at quality. Some of the bracelets I had were getting very old and one even broke apart as I stretched it to put on. I also got rid of colors that I don’t often wear.

I looked for the most meaningful ones that remind me of something like any that were given to me as a gift, any given to me or purchased in honor of my pets, and any handmade for me by a child in my life. That made it much easier.

Necklaces were really easy also because shocker – I don’t wear most of them. I kept so many because I’d imagine someday I might have the perfect out for it but the reality is that I don’t need jewlry to complete a look. In fact, I usually wear the some core pieces that are basically neutral and not any one color. So I got rid of a TON of my costume jewelry necklaces. Now I can really focus on my favorite ones and not have an overwhelming amount to search through when I go to choose one.

And finally, rings. I wear the same rings when I wear rings at all. There 5 of them. Beyond that, I only kept 1 or 2 that are sentimental to me (and can also be worn on a necklace). This was way easy to do!

In the end I even got rid of my wooden jewelry box and got a brand new more minimalistic jewelry organizer. Getting rid of the jewelry box gave me more closet shelf space too!
