A Rocky Health Update (2 Year Heart Check Up + A Tough Decision)

So last week was certainly a crazy one.  A few weeks back, Rocky had his annual heart check up that got him a full workup of all the tests.  The great and amazing news is that there was absolutely no progression of his heart cnodition (you can read all about his original diagnosis of Mitral Valve Disease here) and last year we had great news at his one year check up, too!
But, the vet did have some concerns with his teeth and I totally get it because his breath has been somewhat stinky for a while now.  He suggested we do a dental cleaning and possible extractions and that we had to do it at his facility because they are better equipped to deal with heart patients which is a big deal.   So we scheduled it for Thursday, March 9th of last week.

I was a nervous wreck because I know it's risky to use anesthesia and stuff like that on animals with heart issues so when the phone rang earlier than they said they'd call, my heart dropped.  When I answered it was the vet who was doing his cleaning. She started off by saying that Rocky is the sweetest thing ever and they were even dressing him in little sweaters they had.

Then she said they were able to clean his teeth but she doesn't feel comfortable putting him under more anesthesia for the X-rays and possible extractions. She doesn't think he'll make it because he's already been so up and down with heart rate and blood pressure and she's a wimp (in a good way) because if it was her dog she'd stop too. It's a sticky situation and she said there's 4 teeth that look like they could possibly be taken out. So If I wanted them out she'd send me to a different facility where there's a huge anesthesia team but the risk is still the same.  So I said "what if we just see how he is after a year" and of course she said that he COULD be completely fine after a year, or his teeth could get worse and that puts him at waiting a year with his hearth health puts him at an even greater risk going under anesthesia.

And at that point she said I'd have to make the choice of is his quality of life fine (it is now and it probably will be then bc he acts so damn young) or is it worth the risk of putting him under knowing that he very well may not make it and if that's the case I would have to be comfortable with saying "well atleast he died while we were trying to save his health anyways" .

What a tough thing to have to comprehend.  I told her (and she agreed) that I feel like putting him at that kind of a risk feels like I'm slighting him and I couldn't live with myself if I knew I ended his life early. I mean he is so happy now, he eats fine, plays fine, his heart condition barely affects him, and he's so happy (she agreed that he's the happiest chihuahua she's ever seen) and to keep doing whatever it is I do for him. The crappy  part is that dental disease can kill you so I am crossing my fingers that we get lucky and he doesn't have any issues with the four teeth that she said could be iffy.  The only way to know is to do xrays which require anesthesia and it's just too much of a risk.  She struggled to keep him going as it was.

They sent me home with a little swag bag of goodies for his dental hygeine. I'm going to give him dental chews more often and brush his teeth even better.

It was a difficult decision to have to make, knowing that if I don't act now it could (maybe) get fatal eventually or maybe it wouldn't. But if I act now to see if it's critical or not I could end his life right away.

Rocky loves his life and I've never seen him so happy. He is literally the happiest dog I've ever met in my entire life. There's no way I can take that from him. I know he wouldn't know the difference because he'd be gone but I know the difference.

I feel like I'd be killing him early if I took a risk and something happened to himthen it's just not worth it.  I mean, if he was older and weaker it might be different but he doesn't even act like an elderly dog and honestly for a lot of Chihuahuas, 12 years is not even that old of an age for them because some can live to be 16 and 18 even with heart problems. I feel like he has several more years left based on my observations.

So he was quite dopey after I brought him home and of course he is eating soft foods right now.  Speaking of that...

He ate like a king because he is obsessed with these Wellness CORE Chunky Centers! I looooooove that this is packed with superfoods and it gives him a high protein meal to go with his energy level. It's basically shredded chicken and gravy surrounded by a pate with spinach! It's 100% grain free and it comes in a convenient easy to open container that's ready to serve!

I think this is his new food for sure now!

So really it's the luck o' the Irish that Rocky is doing well and still here today.   I found Rocky years ago when he wandered into my parents' yard and it was in March.  So March is ddefinitely his lucky month!

Anyways, thanks for reading my update and thanks for all the kind words that some of you on my Facebook have already said.  I know I'm doing the right thing for Rocky because I'm not letting fear control my decision.  Here's to many happy years to come!

Rocky's Great News!

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

You may remember a post I did last year about Rocky being diagnosed with Mitral Valve Disease. Well last week was his follow up appointment at the one year mark. He went in to have all the scans, x-rays etc for his heart. And we got great news!

I am super excited to report that Rocky's enlarged heart, while still bigger than normal, has greatly reduced in size as well as the one chamber of heart. The before and after picture shows (at the top) how big his heart was and how it pressed on his windpipe, causing him to cough anytime he was active. He is doing great on heart medicine, I can't hear a murmur, and he is so active and enjoys running around like the crazy man that he is! I could not have asked for better news!! Of course his condition can change at any time, as with anything in a person or pet but early detection has always been key, so that's why I will continue to take him to his yearly heart scans and his quarterly blood pressure/ bloodwork check ups!

Thanks for all your positive thoughts last year and throughout the year!

YAY ROCKY!!!

An Update On Rocky

Thursday, February 12, 2015

So as you read in this post, Rocky had a rough time lately.

Our original appointment was to be Monday the 16th with a Cardiologist.  This past Monday, Pixie developed a cough out of nowhere, so I took her up to my vet and I also brought Rocky with me so I could update her about him.  Man, am I glad I did that.  Pixie just had a cold, so that was easy but then she looked at Rocky.   I told her I had an appointment next Monday and her eyes got huge.  She said that was way too long to wait, since we really have no idea how serious his condition is until then, and honestly, we could lose him before then.  She told me she could get me into see someone who specialist in Echocardiograms and heart stuff and I could see him Wednesday.   I took the appointment.

We brought Dino along.... you know... the toy he's obsessed with from this post.

I took off work on Wednesday and was literally worried sick up until we got there.   I was so afraid something could happen to him before then.  Once there, Rocky was not a happy camper once he got shaved a bit and had some jelly on him.   He retreated to his carrier immediately and pouted!

I was shocked to learn that his heart murmur was only a 3/6 rather than the dramatic 6/6 the Emergency Vet gave us.    Phew!!!  After the Echo scans, I left so confused as I couldn't understand half of the words he said. I cried the whole way home.  I still didn't understand the damn diagnosis because a million words were thrown at me.   When I got home I left a message for my regular vet.  I was in the middle of sobbing, thinking that Rocky had a few months left to live, when she called me back.   She had the paperwork already from the doctor we had just seen.  So I asked her to read everything to me and explain it to me in the way she always does.   (I seriously love her!)  Rocky was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Endocardiosis.  Basically, the left side of his heart is enlarged and the walls are thicker and it makes it difficult to get the blood to his Aortic Chamber.   The doctor is putting him on Enalapril.  Dogs with this issue can live for many years with pills.  Many of my friends have dogs that lived for 4-6 more years! It's not as serious as what we originally thought it was (Cardiomyopathy).   I am SO SO SO RELIEVED!!!!!!!!!!

The shock of everything has worn off and life is getting back to normal.  Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes!!!

How My Rescue Chihuahua Rocky Rescued ME & the Bracelet that Represents That

Monday, December 30, 2013

I can honestly say that my "rescue" chihuahua Rocky has had a huge impact in my life ever since the day I found him. Long story short, he was owned by an elderly couple and they had several dogs. They were beginning to consider finding new homes for their dogs as their health was deteriorating but before they could do that, Rocky escaped from their house (he's a quick little bugger) and was exploring the neighborhood like usual. It was then that he stumbled into my parents' backyard and my mom called me to tell me they found a tiny dog and had no idea whom he belonged too. After a weekend of keeping Rocky with me and making sure he was warm and well-fed, I received a text from my mom telling me that she had located his owners but still had good news. They explained their hardships with their health and then once she showed them a photo of me with my other 3 chihuahuas, the man exclaimed that he believed in fate and the fact that Rocky stumbled into the yard of a chihuahua lover wasn't just coincidence. My mom had told him that I was falling in love with Rocky and I would be willing to keep him if they were willing to re-home him with me. The answer was yes.

It took a few weeks for me to warm up to having a male dog and getting over the misconception that they pee everywhere and hump everything. Rocky was in love with me and was sooo grateful, more so than my girls. The only life they've ever known is to be super spoiled, sleeping in my bed, and being cuddled every night. Rocky on the other hand had been used to sleeping in a dog pen with the other dogs and probably wasn't handled as much as my girls were. It was as if he KNEW what he had. I often see him staring at me, smiling with loving eyes. And he came in to my life at a crucial time when I was having some major issues with the men in my life and needed a little guardian. It's amazing how loyal he is to me, he doesn't leave my side, and he has no other intention except to get love. I mean, he isn't even tempted away from me with food!

I'm not alone when it comes to having a special little furry man in my life, because it's the same concept that inspired Angel to start Sunny Side Design. Angel was a busy mom of three with an already hectic life so the decision to adopt a dog was overwhelming to her at first. Her oldest daughter finally convinced her that it would be worth it and after several months of searching, they found Cooper through a rescue agency.

Angel is in love with Cooper and can't imagine life without him, nor can the rest of her family. Of course there are typical snafus like eating shoes, getting on the furniture, and speeding around the house for no apparent reason, he's considered a blessing in their home! The question "who rescued who" was the thought that motivated Angel to create the Rescue Me Jewelry Line. And a portion of each sale is donated back to animal rescue organizations! Sunny Side Design offers hand stamped charm necklaces and bracelets that can be personalized with your pet's name!

I received a gorgeous bracelet from Sunny Side Design. It has a little dog tag that reads "Rescued by Rocky" and includes a couple little charms like a heart, a paw print, and a dog!   It means so much to me and is  a great symbol of my bond with Rocky.   It's super fun to explain the story behind it!

If you or someone you know can relate, then go ahead and share the story with a charitable purchase of a Rescue Me piece of jewelry!
