How to Simplify Fall Decor

Tuesday, October 1, 2024

I used to go all out for every holiday when it comes to decorating but over the years it became exhausting and not as enjoyable. Now that I live a more simple life I like to reflect that in my decor for the holidays.  For me, excessive decor looked like clutter and it got to the point where I realized less is more.  So here's to simplify fall decor.

Decorating Your Home for Fall

Wednesday, September 19, 2018

In celebration of my favorite season I wanted to put together some tips to help everyone else decorate their home for Fall. I love this time of year. The air is crisp and cool while the sun is still warming you up.  The colors are beautiful and there are less bugs.  And it's super easy to decorate for Fall so without further ado - enjoy!

5 Reasons to Look Forward to Fall

Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Ahh Fall is right around the corner and I'm ecstatic about it. But I know that there are some people out there that aren't yet ready to embrace it.

The Weather
That cool crisp air that soothes your skin when the wind blows, all while the sun still keeps you warm when you sit under it.  You can't go wrong with Fall weather.  Even on the warm days there is generally a breeze.  Oh, and no more humidity means no more frizzy hair, am I right ladies?!  Fall is the season of no sweat for me!

The Colors
The sunsets and sunrises are always more colorful and warm and the colors of the leaves and flowers (mums!) are just stunning.  I swear everything looks a different hue in Autumn.  And the colors for clothing are set to match the Fall colors you find outside your home.   Plus Fall décor is SO fun and I feel like it brings me joy just decorating with pumpkins and planting mums in my flower pots.

The Fashion
I love boots and skinny jeans and layering with jackets so Fall is definitely my time of the year! Sweater dresses and leggings are everywhere and no matter what you wear, you can totally go for a cozy and fashionable look!   I love the denim jackets and leather jackets and all the wedge boots.  I think my Fall wardrobe is what makes up most of my closet, actually.

The Smell
There is definitely a different smell in the air during Fall.  The leaves smell, the camp fires smell, the pumpkin smells, and basically it puts me in a GREAT mood!!! And of course when Thanksgiving rolls around you have the amazing smells of the kitchen.

What do you love about Fall?

Our Simple Fall Porch Decor + A Giveaway!

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

So unlike a lot of bloggers, I don't have a big front porch that's covered up from the elements and has tons of space to display decor. Of course I wasn't going to let that stop me from decorating for Fall. So here's a look at what I did this year.

Fall To Do List for Homeowners

Monday, September 26, 2016

Tis the season for cool breezes, crisp leaves, and pumpkin spice everything!  It's Fall and I love it!  However as a homeowner there are several things that should be done each year around this time to prepare for the cooler months and some things that it's just a good idea to do every few months anyways. So here is a list for all you homeowners!

[ ] Wash + Vacuum the Windows
Not only do you want clean windows for when you leave them open for a cool Fall breeze to come in, but it's finally not so sticky and humid out which means it's not an ordeal to wash the outsides of the windows (if you can reach all of them).  Wash the windows inside and out and then take a vacuum to the screen and the entire inside of the window sill.  No one wants those dead bugs and cobwebs hanging around!

[ ] Clean Out Gutters
If you are able to safely get on your roof or against your gutters to remove leaves and other debris, make sure you do so.  If not, it's not a good mix when it rains because your gutters can be clogged from a variety of things including leaves, twigs, nuts (from those pesky squirrels), and more.  Summer always has lots of storms that wash things down from the top of the roof so you'll find lots of interesting surprises I'm sure.

[ ] Trim Shrubs
After the summer, things are no longer blooming so it's always a good time to trim shrubs and bushes so that they are nice and pretty come Spring.

[ ] Change Air Filters
Always change your home's air filters, it obviously helps with air quality and allergies, but it's also a great way to keep your heating/cooling system working better.

[ ] Clean Your Oven and Fridge
There's always so much entertaining in the summer so it's more than likely that your fridge and oven need a good scrub down.  Make sure you use the Self Cleaning option on your oven if you can.  This way everything will be ready for all the Fall festivities.

[ ] Clean Out Cupboards
Now's a great time to purge, reorganize, and donate any canned goods or dry goods you don't need.  Take everything out at once, then go through one by one and donate or pitch any expired items or items you no longer really need.  Then carefully refill your cupboards keeping them somewhat organized.  It's also a great time to take inventory of any staple ingredients you may need to restock.

[ ] Wash Baseboards and Vacuum Nooks & Crannies
Use a wet wipe or a rag with water or cleaning solution to wipe down baseboard heaters.   Also use the narrow nozzle attachment on your vacuum to go through the entire house, high and low and vacuum in things, under things, and around things to get any cobwebs, dust bunnies, fur balls, and crumbs.  Don't forget to vacuum vents!

[ ] Clean Bathrooms
Fall is the time of year for inside guests so be sure to scrub the counters, the tub, the floor, and clean out the toilet.  Also don't forget to wash your hand towels every 2 weeks.

[ ] Cover or Bring In Patio Furniture
If you have cushions on your patio furniture you may want to bring it in when you know that you'll no longer be outside a lot.  If you have covers for your furniture now's a good time to get them out and get them ready to put on.

I'm sure there are plenty more things I could add but I tried to think of the less obvious ones than decorating for fall and raking leaves, hehe! Happy Fall!

5 Reasons I Love Mums

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Mums are my favorite flower ever.   I am not a big plant person because I tend to kill them without even trying.  I either over water or under water or don't give them enough light,  so the fact that I have any kind of plant that I am claiming I love is a miracle!!!!    There are several reasons I love Mums.

|1| Colors
Mums come in soooo many different colors and they all are Fall friendly colors which is not only my favorite time of year but I love earthy tones!   I love going to pick out Mums and seeing all the color options to choose from. It's so awesome to see people plant all different colors together and how the entire spread looks.

|2| They are Hardy
Mums are a very hardy flower.   They are tough and can withstand heat and cooler temperatures which is why they are great in the Fall and the Summer.  I don't even worry about watering my Mums, I just let the rain handle that. As long as you pinch them in the off seasons they will continue to grow nicely.

|3| Great Decor
Mums look amazing as a decorative piece in a plantar near your front door alone or you can add them to a pumpkin display. I love Mums as a prop in seasonal photographs.  The colors are perfect for Fall so it's a nice way to get your yard festively decorated in a more discreet manner.

|4| Inexpensive
Mums aren't as expensive as most perrenials and you can often get a deal when you buy several at the same time.  I'm all for cheap flowers especially when it's a flower that comes back every year.   My Grandma even told me that she has literally planted stems from her mums and they ended up getting roots and growing into the ground. I mean, you could basically steal mums from people's yards and start your own! of course I'm not encouraging that haha!

|5| Easy Pruning
It's really easy to pinch off Mums in between blooming seasons and I consider them a very low maintenance flower.  No mess, no fuss, no replanting, no moving inside.

What's your favorite flower?

Fun Things to Do Around the House to Prepare for Fall

Monday, September 21, 2015

I don't know about you but Fall is my favorite season!!!    I have some things I like to do each year around this time to help prepare for Fall so I figured I'd share my list.

|1| Plant Mums
Mums are my favorite flower so I always prep my garden and clean it up. This year I'm planting them for the first time so I had a lot of weeding to do and I had to make sure the soil was ready.  So if you already have mums in your garden and you don't need to plant more just make sure your garden is cleane dup.

|2| Washing Floor Mats
There was a lot of traffic over the summer from entertaining every weekend so nows a good time for me to throw our floor mats in the washing machine. Make sure you hang them to dry!  I even wash the bath mats!

|3| Deep Clean Your Car
Remove everything from your car, vaccuum, reorganize before putting things away, clean the interior dash, and give the outside of your car a good wash and a wax!  It's not terribly hot out this time of year so you don't have an excuse not to!  Also check your tire pressure and make sure your oil doesn't need changed.

|4| Decorate for Fall
I like to put a hay bale and pumpkins near my front porch usually around October 1st.

|5| Deep Clean Your Kitchen
Now is the perfect time for cleaning out the refrigerator, checking expiration dates, and actually washing the drawers and shelves.  I also clean out the microwave, oven, and the stove top.  It's always a good idea to clean high and low too so don't be afraid to dust on top of the fridge or any cabinets.
|6| Break Out Your Fall Wardrobe
As long as the weather is starting to really change, it's safe to break out the fall items you may have stored away.  It's also safe to put certain summer clothing like shorts, summer dresses, and bathing suits away. Make sure you wash all your clothing that you plan to store.

What are some things you do around this time of year?

8 Stores with Everything You Need for Fall Entertaining at Rockvale Outlets Lancaster

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Since there are SO many amazing deals and shops to be found at Rockvale Outlets Lancaster, I decided to compile a list of 8 things you need to get in order to be a great entertainer this Fall.   The best part is, you can get them all in one place!

1//Preferred Shopper Card
Because if you have one, you can take advantage of even more exclusive discounts and some of the major stores there! You can sign up for the one I have at the management office of Rockvale Outlets Lancaster or any participating store. You can also sign up here. You can see participating stores and register for your card and then just pick it up in person!

And if you aren't local, check with the main office of your favorite outlets to see if they offer something similar!

2// Proper Pet Accessories
For those of you with pets, it's always nice to keep them off the furniture when guests are over. So what better than to get them a pet bed, like the ones at the Orvis Outlet.  It also looks a lot better than having a bunched up ball of blankets on the floor that your dog sleeps on in the middle of Thanksgiving Dinner.

3//Necessary Cooking Utensils
Nothing is more terrifying than starting to cook a recipe hours before your guests arrive and realizing you don't have the right pots, pans, or utensils that you need!   Make sure you think ahead and check out the selection of Kitchen goodies at the QVC Outlet

4// Beautiful Seating for your Guests
Wouldn't you love to have beautiful pillows on the couches to welcome your guests to have a seat?  Exactly!   There are so many awesome home decor items at Kirkland's Home

5// Fabulous Decor
I don't know about you but when I'm a guest in someone's home especially around the holidays, I always love to admire how they decorate their house.  Well you're in luck because one of my favorite stores is at Rockvale Outlets Lancaster. Pottery Barn Outlet is full of gorgeous home decor and even plates and other dining needs so that you can impress your guests and take advantage of outlet sales and prices.

6// Quality Utensils
The cheaper lower quality utensils may be okay for daily use in your home, but when you have people over for a meal, you need to have quality forks, spoons, and knives.  Reading China & Glass has plenty of choices for you to look at and there are always great specials going on!

7//For Storage for Leftovers
Whether you keep them to yourself or send leftovers home with your guests, you need quality food storage containers, and Corningware Corelle Revere Stores are just the place!

8// Wine
No party is complete without a glass of wine for your guests.   So while you're at Rockvale Outlets Lancaster, be sure to swing by the Nissley Wine Shop and grab a few bottles.

What stores would you be checking out first?

I have had these camo pants for quite a while and just couldn't figure out what to style them with until it finally got cold enough for sweaters. That's when I took advantage of my favorite gold sweater and put this outfit together.

I loaded up on my favorite gold jewelry and grabbed the JustFab Capital Bag.

So what I wore:

Sweater - Kohls (similar), Bag - JustFab, Camo Pants - Target (similar), Necklace - Charming Charlie (similar), FIERCE Leopard Bracelet - BCBGeneration, Boot- JustFab.
