Foods that are bad for your teeth are everywhere. Everyone knows the usual suspects such as candy, chocolate and soda. But there are some surprisingly bad foods and drinks that you might think are healthy. From ice cubes to cough drops, here are some of the worst offenders.

Tasty Dried Fruits

Dried fruits are basically natural candy, but like candy, they are usually bursting with excess sugars. Because dried fruits like raisins are also sticky, they tend to cling to your teeth, causing even more damage by allowing bacteria to produce acid. If a tooth goes beyond repair because of your cravings, a single tooth dental implant is a reliable restorative treatment for reclaiming your bite. In the meantime, be aware that not all seemingly good foods are what you think.

Soothing Ice Cubes

There’s nothing quite like an icy drink on a hot day. But are you one of those people who chews the ice cubes when you are done? If so, you could be damaging your teeth more than you realize. Ice can be very damaging to teeth because it is so hard. It isn’t uncommon for people to have dental emergencies because they have cracked a tooth or chipped enamel after chewing on ice. If you do like to chew ice, replace ice cubes with ice chips and flakes that melt away.

Juice is Bad for Your Teeth!

A survey in the UK by The Guardian found that 83% of Brits drink fruit juice or smoothies at least once per week. Juice is a great way to pick yourself up and get some vitamins. However, most fruit juices are bursting with acid that erodes enamel. So give these a try instead:

Water, although tasteless, is harmless and is actually good for your teeth at any time.
Milk is packed with calcium and can actually neutralize excess acids in the mouth.
Coconut water is packed with electrolytes for hydration and offers extra calcium.
Cough Drops and Lozenges

So, you’ve got the sniffles and your head feels like it’s about to pop! Lozenges and cough drops are a common remedy for some of the symptoms of a cold. However, while these might help you feel a little better, they can be terrible for your gnashers. Cough drops are basically candy, and they are usually packed with just as much sugar as cola cubes and chocolate drops. Also, you are encouraged to suck lozenges, which means the sugars remain in your mouth for longer.

Diet Soda and Sparkling Water

Okay, so you are being good by switching to diet sodas and sparkling water. Diet soda has no sugar, right? Well, yes, but there are sweeteners that cause issues with your teeth and even nervous systems, such as aspartame. However, even drinks without aspartame, such as sparkling water, are carbonated, and these contain higher levels of phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid is bad for calcium production and can wear away bone density in large amounts.

Summary

Dried fruits might appear healthy, but they are among the worst foods that are bad for your teeth. If you aren’t aware, fruit juice, especially citrus, wears away tooth enamel. Also, even diet sodas and sparkling water are bad for your teeth because of higher levels of phosphoric acid.
