Deciding what to wear on any given day can be a stressful task and simplifying your wardrobe can make it so much easier in the long run. Here are some quick tips to simplify your wardrobe that can be done all at once or little by little.
Get Rid of Duplicates
Now I am the first to admit if I find something I love I will buy it many colors and there's nothing wrong with that. But sometimes we do that with a piece of clothing that we end up not wearing duplicates of. Sometimes it's because we end up not liking the colors or maybe the style no longer appeals to us. If you have duplicates of similar things whether they're actually the same exact item or similar, consider paring down to only what you love the most. If you have 5 different styles of black tees, get it down to only the 2 absolute favorites.
Go for Comfort Over Style
We all have things we love the look of but can't stand wearing for more than a couple hours. Now is the time to get rid of those uncomfortable items. There's no sense in keeping a cute dress that has a gap at the top which causes you to obsessively pull it up the entire evening. If you can't get it tailored to fit better, it's not worth keeping.
Have a Rotation
Depending on the type of wardrobe you have this can be super helpful. If you work in an office full time and need to have different outfits, choose a time period like 2 weeks and choose 14 outfits or outfit combos. You can focus on keeping only items you can wear in this rotation of time for your main wardrobe. Obviously special occasion items like evening dresses, etc. can stay but for the meat of your wardrobe, setting up a rotation can be so helpful. And I promise no one will be able to notice you wore a certain outfit exactly two weeks prior.
Reduce Accessories
Jewelry, scarves, and even shoes can be considered accessories and should be reduced in volume but simply sticking with what goes with most things in your wardrobe. Again, dressy shoes for special occasions can stay but with your daily accessories, reducing the volume can make it much easier to pick out what you want when the time comes. If you have one necklace that only goes with one color in your wardrobe, consider getting rid of it and choosing a more neutral necklace to go with it. For shoes, you really don't need 3 different pairs of brown boots in different shades. If 1 pair goes with everything in your rotation, just keep those.
Be Picky with Handbags
I used to love handbags and switching in and out of them. Over the years I've grown tired of doing that and instead I tend to use the same few over the course of a year. Aside from a few special ones that I really love, I pretty much got rid of all of my bags except a few core ones. I actually have one style of handbag in 3 colors for my everyday handbag. I use the gray one in Spring and Summer, brown in Fall, and black in Winter. This makes switching into my next bag a breeze because what goes in a certain pocket of one bag goes into the same pocket in the next. If a bag doesn't provide space for everything I keep in it on a daily basis, I get picky and won't buy it or keep it.
Stay with a Theme
When it comes to colors, a closet can look overwhelming even if you have it organized like a rainbow. I ended up getting rid of orange, red, and yellow shaded items because it just wasn't a color that most of my accessories match with and I don't really like how those colors look on me. I stick now with emerald tones of greens, blues, purples, and pinks. And I opt for grey over black and white. I may have a couple grey items and then just 1 or 2 black tops and 1 or 2 white tops because white gets too dirty and black makes me hot when I'm outside in the sun.
Using these quick tips right away or over time can help you curate the best closet for your lifestyle and make choosing what to wear a breeze!
