Transforming your basement into a genuine success story (and avoiding all the usual issues involving mold and damp) is challenging. However, the right approach brings it within striking distance for most people.

The trick, of course, is to know what you’re doing, but that’s what this post is for. We look at the strategies you should use for your basement renovation and what you need to do to turn it into a roaring success.

Define A Clear Purpose

The first step is to be clear on what you want the basement to do. What’s its function?

Being clear on this is essential if you want it to be a success in the future. Otherwise, you’re spending a lot of money on wasted space

If it’s for storage, there are usually cheaper ways of getting that, so don’t focus too much on that idea. Instead, ask yourself whether you want it as a family area, games room, or somewhere to store all your tech wiring.

Deal With Moisture Issues

Next, you’ll want to work out a way to deal with all the moisture issues. These can be invasive and ruin the experience of owning a basement, so you’ll need to contend with them right from the start.

The best way to do this is to use waterproof sealants and membranes. These prevent water from the surrounding soil penetrating the brickwork or masonry and getting into the room itself.

You should deal with this issue as soon as you can, preferably when any building work starts, since the success of the rest of the space hinges on doing this part correctly.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

The next step is to ensure you ventilate the space well. You want to ensure that you regulate the temperature to reduce energy costs.

Start by adding vents for the HVAC and connect it to the rest of the home. This way, you can stop it from becoming uncomfortable during the winter. Then, you should put in additional vents to equalize moisture levels and reduce condensation.

Use Egress Windows For Safety

Another way to make your basement renovation a success is to use egress windows. These are large enough to provide an emergency exit while still providing light. If you can combine them with custom steel window well covers, that’s even better. These prevent anyone from falling down, keeping the entire area safe.

Use Durable Building Materials

Importantly when building a basement, avoid the temptation to choose cheap building materials. While it might be tempting, it can also backfire.

For example, using vinyl planks is usually better than carpet for basements because it is so moisture-resistant. Likewise, you want to ensure the drywall and paint can resist mold in the unlikely event that condensation starts forming.

Add Storage

Finally, you might want to add smart storage in the form of multi-functional furniture. This way, you can avoid taking things upstairs all the time while also keeping the area clutter-free (which can be challenging in some situations depending on your setup).
