It's bittersweet right now as we close out August and say goodbye to Summer. Kids are preparing for going back to school, gardens are getting their final harvests, and all the fun gatherings as we knew them are stopping for the year. Here's an ode to Summer.
I used to dread the end of Summer because I didn't want to accept it. I wanted the fun to keep going. The late hot nights by the neighbor's pool, the smell of cookouts and people laughing, the colorful garden views as I roamed my yard - I wanted it to last forever.
But as I got older I began to notice something....by the end of Summer, my body and mind were getting tired. Just like my garden beds were putting out their last crop and their brightest final blooms I realized I was actually looking forward to Fall and beginning my hibernation.
Don't get me wrong - I love the long days, the warm weather, and the constant things to do. But I also want a break. It's actually nice to not have to constantly keep up with the garden tasks like watering, weeding, and harvesting. It's nice to not have to battle the bugs and fight to find shade on the super humid days where there's no breeze but just stagnant air.
So I started embracing the changing of the seasons because after all, I'm part of the Earth, so why can't I embrace it's patterns where I live. So now at the end of Summer I cheerfully do my end of season garden and yard tasks. I begin to plan cooler weather recipes for dinner in the Fall months, and I begin to say no when I'm invited places.
As the Fall changes to Winter we have the rush and chaos of the holidays which exhausts me even more when my body's already trying to focus on slowing down. By the time Winter has arrived, I'm enjoying working on the inside of my home. I also focus on tasks like journaling more, learning new hobbies, and other things that I can do with my time when I can't go wander aimlessly in my yard in barefeet.
Ever since I started going with the flow of the seasons, I noticed my body and brain are so ready for the changes. By the time Spring is here I'm itching to garden and have every space of my garden beds meticulously planned out. I've got renewed energy to pour into yard work and entertaining.
So Goodbye Summer..... I don't need to miss you because I know you'll be back every year...just like always.
