Whether you’re battling anxiety or dealing with difficult emotions, dealing with mental health struggles can often feel like a losing battle. However, it's important to note that, no matter what your mind is telling you, things do get better - especially when you put plans in place to make that happen for yourself.
With that in mind, here are some tips that can prove helpful when it comes to bettering your mental health so that you can leave negative emotions behind as we move into 2025.
Talk about how you are feeling. Many of those who are struggling with their mental health do so in silence - which is perhaps why over half of those dealing with mental health conditions do not receive any help. Whether you’re worried about the stigma surrounding this or simply do not want to worry those around you, remember that you deserve to be heard.
Not only that, but countless studies have found that opening up about how we are feeling is often the first (and most crucial) step toward recovery. This is because we instantly feel a lot less isolated and alone. It also gives you the opportunity to get to the route of our feelings so that we can begin to make positive changes in our lives. If you do not feel comfortable opening up to friends and family, consider reaching out to a mental health professional instead.
Be willing to admit you have a problem. Sometimes, we’re unable to address a problem in our lives because we are not willing to admit that we have one. This is particularly true when it comes to issues such as addiction, which are often clouded by stigma. However, with this admission comes a chance to recover from whatever has a hold over you, as it means you can begin to access support services, such as an affordable intensive outpatient program.
Know when to remove yourself from a certain situation. It goes without saying that some situations are worse for our mental health than others. As such, knowing when to remove yourself from a specific scenario (and setting boundaries moving forward) can be key to bettering your mental health.
For example, if you notice that your self-esteem plummets and your anxiety sky rockets after spending time with a certain “friend”, ask yourself why that may be. Remember: if they are acting in a way that makes you feel bad about yourself, they’re not really the kind of friend you need. You can remedy this by a) asking them to make changes or consider their actions and setting boundaries relating to this, or b) cutting them off if necessary. While this may seem harsh, you deserve to spend time with people who make you happy - not the opposite!
Practice self-care. Indulging in daily self-care practices is another great way to get your mental health in check due to the simple fact that doing so encourages you to make sure that all of your needs are met. It also means that you are making time for yourself, no matter how busy you may be!
