We all like to have an extra one of most things on hand for when we run out but sometimes it gets to be too much and it feels like clutter. Backstock is considered the extra stuff we keep on hand to use when we run out of our main supply. It can apply to food items in the kitchen, beauty products in the bathroom, and cleaning products in the closet.
The problem is that we can get carried away with stocking up. Sometimes it's intentional but other times it comes from getting the same type of product in another brand, freebies and gifts, or keeping items in stock that we no longer use at all. Then everything gets messy and cluttered and we can end up running out to buy more of something from the store when we already had 2 backups at home. It's a waste of money, time, and space. Here's how to get a handle on it.

Then everything gets messy and cluttered and we can end up running out to buy more of something from the store when we already had 2 backups at home. It's a waste of money, time, and space. Here's how to get a handle on it.
Use what you have first.
You need to go through and take a look at everything you have by category. If you have 6 different facial cleansers ask yourself if they are all ones you will use. Anything expired should be tossed but after that, start using just ONE of those products. Put the others in a separate area as backstock whether it's a bin that holds them or a storage shelf.
Make a rule for how many to have on hand.
Obviously you will have to use up your excessive backstock at first but after that, set a rule for yourself on how many backstock items you can have for each product. I only ever have 1 on hand of my backups for contact solution, nasal spray, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and facial products. Doing this means you won't buy more than you need but you will always have one on hand if you run out suddenly of your current product.
Take the hint when it's time to restock.
As soon as you have to grab your backstock item, this is your signal to add it to your shopping list again so you have a new replacement on hand. Since you won't need it right away, the benefit is that you can find it on sale most of the time. When we suddenly run completely out of something we get a feeling of panic and will spend whatever we have to in order to get it immediately.
Keep backstock organized.
This parts fun because you can do whatever works for you to create a system to display your backstock where it's easy to see what each item is. But you still get to keep it out of plain everyday view so it's less clutter. Keeping a backup item behind a current item takes up space and immediately gives off the clutter vibe.
