How To Reduce The Weather’s Impact On Your Home

Friday, February 3, 2023

Did you know that 70% of recent home insurance claims are for weather-related damages? That's particularly due to extreme weather being on the rise, which means more homes yield to the natural elements. Weatherproofing your home is a great way to reduce the impact extreme weather has on your home. It saves you money from major repairs and keeps your home's maintenance costs low, regardless of the season. With reported cases of extreme weather on the rise, here are some effective ways to reduce the impact of weather on your home.

Trim trees and shrubs

Overhanging branches can cause damage to your roof, windows, and walls during high winds or heavy snow. Regularly trimming trees and shrubs prevents this damage, ensuring your home remains protected during severe weather conditions. Furthermore, they are less likely to damage your home in the event of a storm, so keep this in mind. By taking the time to maintain your trees and shrubs, you can protect your home and help ensure its safety and integrity in the face of any weather.

Seal air leaks

Air leaks around windows, doors and electrical outlets can allow moisture to enter your home, causing damage to walls, floors, and ceilings. Use caulk, weather stripping, or foam sealant to seal any gaps and cracks in these areas. You can also consider replacing your damaged and outdated windows with updated models to offer a more durable upgrade and aid in temperature regulation in your home. You can work with experts such as window contractors from Opal Enterprises to get the best replacement windows, particularly if you live in areas with extreme, unpredictable weather and extreme temperature fluctuations.

Maintain your roof

A well-maintained roof can prevent damage from high winds, heavy rain, and hail while ensuring your home remains protected during severe weather conditions. Regular roof inspections can help identify potential problems, such as missing or damaged shingles or improper flashing, allowing you to make necessary repairs before they become major issues. In addition, maintaining your roof can extend its lifespan and prevent the need for costly repairs. Proper ventilation and insulation can protect your roof from damage and increase energy efficiency, so keep this in mind.

Install gutter and downspout systems

Gutters and downspouts direct water away from your home and foundation, preventing damage to your walls, windows, and doors. They also protect your home's foundation by preventing water from building around the base of your home, which can cause cracking and settling over time. When installing gutter and downspout systems, it's important to choose high-quality materials and enhance proper installation and effective functioning. Regular cleaning and maintenance can also ensure that your gutter and downspout systems remain in good working order and can effectively protect your home from water damage during heavy rain or snow.

Install storm windows and doors

Storm windows and doors provide an extra layer of protection against high winds, heavy rain, and hail, helping to prevent damage to your windows and doors during severe weather conditions. When choosing storm windows and doors, it's important to consider factors such as material quality, energy efficiency, and durability to ensure they provide the best protection for your home. Regular maintenance and inspections can also ensure that your storm windows and doors remain in good working order and provide effective protection against weather damage.

How to Keep Your Home Protected During a Natural Disaster

Wednesday, July 13, 2022

No matter where you live in the world, you’re always going to be at risk of a natural disaster. They’re natural, they just happen. Even if you’re moving into a new home, you’re still going to be prone to being a victim of a natural disaster at one point in your life or another. While yes, the idea of yourself, your family, and even your home getting affected by a natural disaster is completely terrifying, it’s just a natural occurrence.

While there are some other areas of the world that are going to be more affecting by natural disasters (think of California and its droughts, wildfires, and earthquakes) there are other areas that may not be so likely affected. But none the less, every home should prepare for this. So, here is everything you need to know about protecting your home from natural disasters.

How to Get Prepared for Natural Disasters in Your Home

When natural disasters strike, the first thing to do is to evacuate. But, this can’t always happen, right? Some natural disasters you simply can’t prepare for, such as an earthquake, while others can be easily more prepared in advance. While it’s true most people will be in their homes during a natural disaster, you’ll need to use discretion on what you think is best. Some of the most common natural disasters in the United States include hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. But with climate change, this could mean that more can happen, besides, the US is so big that other areas can also deal with disasters like floods or fires.

The best way to prepare for a natural disaster is by building an emergency kit, no matter where you are, having this is going to help. You can also make sure that you have a plan in place for your home and family before it’s too late. If you live in a region that is prone to natural disasters, make sure you have an emergency kit ready and know the steps you need to take when an emergency strikes. Here are some additional helpful tips:

- Make a family emergency plan: This plan should include the names of your family members and how to contact them in case of an emergency.

- Plan for the worst scenario: If you know that you will be away from home during a disaster, make sure that someone can stay with your pets or move them to a safer place.

- Have an evacuation plan: This plan should include the route you will take out of the area and where you will go after leaving.

But, even if you and your family evacuate to safety from a natural disaster, you’re going to need to look into ways to still keep your home fully safe and protected while you and your family seek out safety somewhere else. It’s important to find ways to protect your home and belongings well in advance before a natural disaster happens.
Get a Contractor to Review Your Reconstruction Plans

The role of a contractor in this process is to provide feedback on the reconstruction plan and give suggestions for improvement. This helps the company to get more accurate and detailed information about the project. A contractor can be anyone with an interest in construction, engineering, architecture, or design-related fields.

The person should be well-versed in construction terminology, have experience with similar projects, and be able to communicate effectively with others on the team. There are contractors for about anything, besides, other than fixing up things, they need to be hired just to inspect your home too. For instance, you may need a roof repair in the very near future without you even realizing it. So review your home, and talk to a contractor.

Use a Flood Insurance Agent for Help for Your Home

A flood insurance agent is a professional who helps people with property and personal insurance. They help homeowners and business owners select the right coverage for their needs. Flood insurance agents offer assistance through consultations, and many do not work on commission. They are typically independent contractors who work from home and have the option to choose their own hours.

You may only need to look into this type of insurance only if you live in a wetland or live close to a body of water. If you live in a desert, for instance, you’re not going to need this. Flooding is a common problem in homes and can cause severe damage to your property. While yes, having flood insurance can help, it’s important to protect your home from floods. These are some helpful tips:

- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of an emergency

- Install water-resistant floorings such as tile or wood

- Install a sump pump system to prevent flooding from occurring

- Have sealed doors and windows, especially for the basement

While these tips are bare bones, this is essentially what contractors will recommend to you as well. A pumping system alone can be a great investment to prevent floods, especially if the flood is caused by too much rain.

Prepare Your Home for a Hurricane or Tornado

While Hurricanes can last for days, even weeks on end, tornadoes usually just last for several hours. However, both are incredibly dangerous and have been known for completely demolishing homes. The hurricane season officially starts on June 1st and continues through the end of November. It is important to take precautions and make sure you are prepared for when a hurricane strikes.

Tornadoes, on the other hand, can technically happen any time of the year but are more prevalent during the summer and spring seasons. While hurricanes hit the coast, a tornado can basically hit anywhere from flat lands, to waters, to even mountains. So, this is one that you’re going to want to be on the lookout for. This can include getting home insurance that covers severe weather but this includes looking into a strong glass for your windows.

Protect your Home from Earthquakes and Volcanoes

Earthquakes and volcanoes are two of the most destructive natural disasters. They can cause a lot of damage to your home, so it's important to take precautions. While earthquakes can happen anywhere around the world, the same can’t be said about volcanoes. So, fortunately, this just may be one less thing you have to worry about when protecting your home from natural disasters. More or less, the tips for both are going to be the same, but, if you live near volcanoes (which isn’t too likely as they’re in national parks), such as Mount St. Helens, then some of these tips may not be the most helpful.

1) Install a ground-breaking system

2) Build a sturdy foundation

3) Seal the chimney and the roof

4) Install water tanks in case of fire

5) Secure loose objects such as bookshelves, picture frames, etc.

When it comes to earthquakes, you just don‘t know when they’re going to happen so you’re basically going to be limited on what you can do. But protecting some of the things in your home can vastly help.

Consider Ways to Insulate Your Home From the Cold

As the temperature drops, it's important to take steps to protect your home from the cold. The first step is to insulate your home with a thicker layer of insulation. This will help keep your home warm and comfortable during the winter months. Another idea is to install heating ducts in areas that are difficult to reach. This will allow you to heat up these areas without having to use a lot of energy or work harder. Lastly, you can also keep your windows closed during the day and open at night when the temperature drops below freezing.

This will help trap heat inside while still allowing fresh air in at night when it's cold outside. All of this seems pretty basic, right? Well, freezing temperatures, especially from blizzards and ice storms are a thing. All throughout the US, Canada, and other countries, people have sadly passed away from major winter storms. So, you’re going to need to ensure that your home is well insulated on the off chance that there is a winter storm.

Maintain a Backup Generator for Your Home

Backup generators are a necessity for any home. It is important to have one in case of an emergency. There are many ways to buy a backup generator, but the most common way is to buy it from an online store. This is where you will find some of the best deals on backup generators for your home. You can also find some of the best brands like Generac, Honda, and Brigg s& Stratton at homeware stores. Having a generator, especially during the winter seasons can be great. If you have a warm home, then it’s less likely that your pipes will burst. Plus, in terms of survival, it’s just best to have one anyway.

Start Preparing Now For When It Happens

You’re going to need to use your discretion and figure out what may or what may not happen in your area. You should also look into past natural disasters within that area. If something has happened before, it can happen again. Plus, climate change among us only proves that it can be more likely for it all to happen too.

3 Sneaky Home Pests To Keep Away: How To Protect Your Home From Insects

Tuesday, April 19, 2022

Many pests can invade your home and cause problems. This blog post will discuss three of the most common sneaky ones: cockroaches, ants, and spiders. Each of these pests can cause damage to your home or pose a health risk to you and your family. We will provide information on identifying these pests and how to protect your home from them.

Via Pexels

1. Roaches

Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in homes. They are attracted to food and moisture and can spread disease. Cockroaches can be difficult to control once they infest a home. The best way to prevent them is to keep your home clean and free of food and water sources that they could use.

Cockroaches are most active at night, so you may not see them during the day. If you do see one, there likely are many more that you don't see. Cockroaches leave behind droppings that can contaminate food and surfaces in your home. It can be helpful to use crawl space encapsulation, this way you can keep moisture away from your crawl spaces and make it harder for cockroaches to enter your home. Encapsulating your crawl spaces can also help keep mold and mildew out of these areas.

2. Ants

Ants are another common pest in homes. These insects are attracted to sweet or greasy foods and can quickly become a nuisance. To prevent ants from entering your home, keep food stored in airtight containers and wipe up any spills immediately. You should also seal any cracks or crevices around your home where they might be able to enter.

If you do find ants in your home, there are several different ways to get rid of them. You can try using baits, traps, or sprays specifically designed for ants. You can also make your own natural and repellent by mixing vinegar and water equally in a spray bottle.

3. Spiders

These eight-legged creatures might not be the first pests that come to mind, but they can be just as pesky. Spiders are known to build webs in corners and crevices, making your home look messy and unkempt. They can also bite, which can be painful and even cause infection. To keep spiders out of your home, seal any cracks or openings and remove any webs you see. You can also try using a spider repellent.

Spiders typically lay their eggs in the spring, so you're most likely to see them this time of year. If you start to see spiders more often, they're probably looking for a place to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, they often lay many eggs at once, so you could end up with many spiders in your home if you're not careful. To prevent this, try to keep your home clean and clutter-free. This will make it less appealing to spiders and make it easier for you to spot them so you can remove them before they lay their eggs.

In conclusion, these are just a few of the many pests that can invade your home. By taking some simple precautions, you can help to keep them out. If you do find yourself with a pest problem, there are various ways to get rid of them. Be sure to act quickly, as the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to control the problem.

4 Great Home Maintenance Tips You Should Conduct Regularly

Tuesday, June 21, 2022

No one likes dealing with home repairs, but it's something that has to be done from time to time. However, rather than waiting for a problem, it's a good idea to conduct routine maintenance tasks on your home. This will help you avoid costly and complicated repairs down the road. In this blog post, we will discuss four excellent home maintenance tips that you should conduct regularly!

1) Check your home's exterior regularly for any damage.

If you want to avoid costly repairs, regularly check your home's exterior for any damage. Look for cracks in the foundation, loose shingles, or anything else that looks out of place. If you notice any damage, repair it as soon as possible.

Exterior checkups are vital if you live in an area with extreme weather conditions. For example, if you live in a hurricane-prone area, you'll want to make sure that your home is in good condition before a storm hits. By doing routine maintenance tasks, you can help ensure that your home can withstand whatever Mother Nature throws it's way.

2) Maintain your heating and cooling systems.

Your heating and cooling system is one of the essential parts of your home, so it's crucial to keep it well-maintained. Have a professional service your HVAC system at least once a year to ensure it's running efficiently. Additionally, you should change your air filters every few months. This will help improve the quality of your indoor air and extend the life of your HVAC system.

Not only is it important to maintain your HVAC system, but you should also be aware of how much energy it uses. Heating and Cooling account for a large percentage of a home's energy consumption, so it's essential to ensure that your system runs as efficiently as possible.

3) Keep your gutters clean.

Your gutters play an important role in protecting your home from water damage, so keeping them clean is crucial. Leaves and other debris can clog up your gutters, leading to water buildup and structural damage. To avoid this, make sure to clean out your gutters at least twice a year.

If you don't feel comfortable cleaning your gutters yourself, you can hire a professional to do it for you. This is primarily a good idea if you live in an area with many trees. Regardless of how often you need to clean your gutters, it's important to do it regularly to protect your home from water damage.

4) Keep your home pest-free.

Pests can not only be a nuisance but also cause severe damage to your home. To avoid this, it's important to keep your home pest-free. Inspect your home regularly for any signs of pests, and if you see any, immediately address the problem.

One way to keep pests out is to seal up any cracks or openings they might use to get inside. Another is to keep food stored properly so that pests don't have anything to eat. You should also regularly clean your home, so there aren't any places for pests to hide.

These are four excellent home maintenance tips that you should conduct regularly. You can help avoid costly and challenging repairs down the road by doing routine tasks. So don't wait until there's a problem - start maintaining your home today!

The Top 10 Big Home Projects Worth Splashing Your Cash On

Tuesday, May 3, 2022

Home renovations aren’t cheap. Whether you’re renovating your kitchen, giving your living room a facelift, or making your bedroom into a study, you will be spending a lot of money. But not all home projects are created equal. Some are worth spending more money on, while others aren’t.

If you’re thinking about investing in a major renovation, you need to know how much you’re willing to invest. Here are the top 10 home renovation projects worth splashing your hard-earned cash on.

Install Solar Panels

When you’re thinking about renovating your home, one of the first things you’ll come across is the potential for solar panels. You can use solar panels to power your home, from charging your electronics to generating electricity for your hot water system.

Installing solar panels can set you back anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000. However, this is a one-time cost that you’ll only have to pay once. And over time, you’ll see that solar panels are one of the best ways to save money on your energy bill. This makes solar panels a worthwhile investment for your purse strings and home.

Add An Extension

Adding an extension to your home can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $80,000. It all depends on the size of the room you decide to expand into and the materials you choose to use for the extension.

You can choose to do anything from creating an open plan living space to adding an extra bedroom. Of course, increasing your home’s square footage won’t come cheap. But it really is worth spending money on. That’s because it’ll add zero’s to your home’s overall worth. And it can drastically improve your quality of life.

Create A Custom Bathroom

If your home comes with a decent-sized kitchen and a small bathroom, renovating the bathroom is an excellent idea. You can use the entire space to create a custom bathroom. Consider making the bathroom into a spa-like space that you can use to pamper yourself.

You can go all out and choose to create a spa-like bathroom that features a changing area, a sauna room, a steam room, a drinking fountain, access to your home’s entertainment system, and a blow-dryer. Or, you can choose to make the renovation into a luxurious master bedroom with a private washroom. You don’t have to go big, but quality bathrooms are never a waste of money because they’ll add to your home’s worth. And who doesn’t love a spa bath?

Upgrade Your Kitchen

From choosing the style of your kitchen cabinets to installing a new countertop, upgrading your kitchen is one of the best home renovations you can make. This will set you back anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000. If you want to choose the style of your kitchen cabinets, then you can go for a traditional look or a sleek and modern look.

The options open to you to renovate your kitchen are endless. And making the investment in it is a smart move. It’s a room you use every day without fail. So having high-quality finishes and appliances make sense because it’ll increase the longevity of your kitchen.

Roof Replacement

If your home’s roof is damaged and needs to be replaced, then this is a major home renovation that’s definitely worth your time and money. However, you should consider a few things before you start this renovation. First, if your roof is damaged because of hail or sustained damage from storms, you should hire an attic contractor to do the renovation. If not, you can remove the damaged roof panels and replace them individually, or remove the whole roof and replace it entirely.

Making improvements to the structure of your home when required is always a good idea. Doing it sooner rather than later means you’re less likely to be burdened with a bigger job. And you can upgrade as you go to make a more efficient home.

Replacing The Windows

Another one of the best home renovations to make is replacing your windows. If your home doesn’t have good-quality windows, you’re wasting money. It’s literally drifting out the gaps and can leave you hemorrhaging cash.

You can choose to go with double-glazed windows, which will help prevent your home from getting too much heat, or you can choose to go with sliding-glass windows. Of course, the quality of the windows and how complicated the style is will dictate how much you pay. But it’s worth spending to get the best looking home windows.

Upgrade The Water Heater

If your old water heater is more than 10 years old, it’s past time to upgrade. This upgrade could cost you anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on the heater’s brand, style, and complexity. You can replace your old water heater with a tankless water heater. The tankless water heater has no tank, and it heats up water as and when you need it.

Install A Quality Security System

There’s nothing worth spending your money on than home renovations to protect you and your family. Of course, if your home is susceptible to burglaries or robberies, installing a security system is a no-brainer. But everyone should have a security system, whether they’re exposed to burglary or not.

There are many types of security systems that you can choose from, including wireless security cameras, security alarms, security gates, and more. And thanks to the technological revolution, lots of systems won’t actually set you back that much. Consider incorporating a SMART home system so you can integrate all your home tech into one.

Complete A Basement Or Garage Revamp

Another excellent home renovation worth spending money on is adding a basement or a garage revamp. If you don’t currently have a basement, adding one will hurt your purse strings. But updating the one you already have doesn’t have to cost a lot but will add to your home’s worth and overall space.

Consider turning the basement space into a home office so you can embrace the home working life with both hands. Or renovate your garage into a space for your parents or in-laws to move into as they get into their twilight years.

Install A New HVAC System

This could be one of the most expensive renovations you can make in your home. If your home is powered by a fossil-fueled furnace or an outdated HVAC system, you should seriously consider upgrading it.

This renovation will require you to hire a contractor, and it will also require you to undergo an inspection before it begins. It should always be done by a professional, and you shouldn’t try to hash it yourself. Because it could end up costing you a bomb and not work correctly.

When To Leave Home Projects To The Professionals (And When To DIY It)

Some updates to your home are worth doing simply because they make it look better. While some will add value to your home and improve your quality of life. But whether you’re adding more space, upgrading a kitchen, or installing solar panels, you need to know what you can do yourself and what you most definitely can’t.

Anything that requires structural work should definitely be left to the professionals. You don’t want to make an unsafe extension and put your family in danger. So don’t DIY it. The same goes for adding new systems like a new HVAC, water heater, or complete security system. There’s a reason there are specific contractors for these things. So leave it to them.

Cosmetic changes like kitchen or bathroom upgrades you can DIY yourself. Granted, some plumbing work might require a contractor. But most of it you can do yourself. So grab a paintbrush and get to work.
