Summer Skincare Tips

Now that Summer is here it's important to take care of one of the most important parts of our body...our skin! No matter what age you are - skincare in the Summer is super important. Here are some tips to enjoy Summer while taking the best care of your skin.

Sunscreen is a must.
Anytime you are going to be in the sun, even if it's not lounging around in a pool, be sure to use sunscreen.  There are different sunscreen for different parts of your body like lotion/spray for the body, specific facial sunscreen for your face, and sunscreen chapstick for your lips.  Just one bad burn increases your risk of skin cancer plus its no fun to get a burn.  Make sure you reapply sunscreen every couple of hours. Wear a hat to protect your scalp, ears, and face. Wear sunglasses to keep the skin around your eyes safe.  Consider using makeup products with SPF, especially foundation.

Clean your face and body.
After a day of Summer heat, your skin is pretty dirty, sweaty, and greasy.  It's important to wash your body even if it's just using body wipes in between showers or baths.  And your makeup should always be removed at the end of the day before bed, especially after a melty day in the sun. Be sure to remove your makeup and use a cleanser on your face then follow up with a moisturizer.

Prioritize after sun care.
Use aloe vera on parts of your skin that got a bit too much sun and always moisturize extra in the Summer.  The sun dries your skin after exposure so help lock in moisture and make up for what you lost. Just like with sunscreen, there are moisturizers dedicated to specific parts of your body.

Stay hydrated.
Another way to take care of your skin not just in the Summer but year round is staying hydrated.  If you can't stand the taste of plain water, add some lemon or a flavor so it's more appealing to you.  And if you plan on drinking while in the sun, you definitely need to hydrate even more.  One drink followed by one water is my rule for myself.

Be mindful of poison and bugs.
If you are in an environment where there can be ticks, mosquitos, and poison plants, be very careful.  Remember - three leaves, let it be! If you're not sure if something is poisonous or not, just assume it is. Use gloves and long sleeves when doing yard work in areas that may have poison plants.  Do a self check for ticks after time in the woods or grassy areas.  Use bug spray to keep mosquitos and ticks at bay.  Reapply often!

Get a dermatologist to check your skin yearly.
It's always better to be safe than sorry so make sure you find a dermatologist in your area and schedule an annual appointment every single year so you can catch anything early.

Make sure to be especially kind to your skin over the next couple of months and have fun!
