I am a huge fan of going to the farmers market on a regular basis and one of my favorite places at my local farmers market is Jo's Bakery run by Jim and Johanna Dubbs. Recently, I learned that Jim is an author and I got a chance to read his latest novel, Confessions of a Farmers Market Romeo.
Jim is the main character of the book and he tells the story of how he was actually conceived by his parents at a farmers market. The book takes place in Gettysburg in the 70s and 80s and to be honest, this book was pretty funny. It's a nice easy and entertaining read for sure.
Jim is like most boys and is very interested in girls. He even gained weight so his parents could send him to a "fat camp" so he could pursue a girl he set eyes on at the booth his parents run at their local farmers market. He got word she was going there so he did everything possible to convince his parents to send him there.
He meets and befriends some memorable characters as well including Wayne who he originally befriended because he lives next door to Jim's crush. The women he meets are very interesting but the way the story is told, it's pretty entertaining and Jim has no shame putting on a front just to have things in common with these girls. I think that's what makes him so likeable because he just rolls with whatever story is going to make getting with any given girl easier for him.
Personally I think Jim is a relatable guy in this book because he's pretty impulsive at times but also just downright hilarious. Despite being goofy at times, he kind of catches your heart and you want the best for him but don't mind reading how much he can mess things up.
If you're looking for a light-hearted entertaining read with great character development, I definitely suggest checking out this book. If you're from central Pennsylvania you will enjoy the local references.
