I'm going to let you in on an important tip for keeping your houseplants happy and that's the nursery pot. I'll explain why they're important and why I use them. Trust me, if you enjoy houseplants, you need to read this post.
Better Watering
When you keep your plants in a nursery pot you can ensure they don't get overwatered. When watering your plants you can lift the nursery pot out of the decorative pot and if there's a huge amount of water that's dripped out, dump it in the sink. This ensure your plant isn't sitting and getting soggy which can cause root rot.
Bottom Watering
Another benefit is that you can easily bottom water houseplants when they are in a nursery pot. Simply place the nursery pot in a tub or container or bowl of water and let it soak up what it needs for a good 30 minutes or so. Bottom watering prevents fungus gnats and can help roots grow stronger because they have to reach down for the water.
Easier to Know when to Repot
When you keep a plant in a nursery pot it's so much easier to know when to repot. You can lift up the nursery pot and see if the roots are poking out of the holes. If so, it's time for a repot. Make sure you only go up 1-2" in size.
Switching Decorative Pots
Have you ever realized you have a plant in a pot that you want to use for something else? Well, if your plants are in nursery pots, it's easy to make the switch. Simply lift it out of the old one and put it in the new one!
Repotting is Easier Overall
Another benefit of nursery pots is that you don't have to fight to get a plant out of it's fancy decorative pot when it's time to repot. If it's excessively rootbound and won't budge, you can cut the nursery pot open which is much more preferred than breaking the decorative pot it was in.
How to get them is simple, whenever you buy plants for inside or outside your home, save the nursery pots! When you repot plants out of a nursery pot, keep it!
So trust me when I say to save any nursery pots you can. You will NOT regret having these on hand when it comes time to repot some of your plants.
