Mid Summer Garden Maintenance

We're half way through Summer which means there are some tasks you should do around your gardens to ensure things keep going smooth.

Prune
It's important to deadhead flowers so you get more growth from the plant. This helps because the energy is no longer going to the dying blooms but to the rest of the plant to produce more. Pruning is especially important in your vegetable garden because things can start getting messy.  For each vegetable you're growing, ESPECIALLY ones that vine, research how to prune them. For cucumbers for example, there are runners you can trim so that your plant doesn't get out of control and spend all it's energy going to an excessive amount of fruit.

Fertilize
It is so important to fertilize your plants.   I like to do this in the evening so I can make sure the plant gets to soak it all in overnight.  Be careful doing it during the day when the plant is going to be exposed to a lot of sunlight. It can take a toll on them.

Pull Anything That's Done
Cool weather crops likely are done and are going to seed. You may notice this with your lettuce as it can start to taste bitter.  That means it's time to pull these things out and make room for the next round of crops.

Harvest What You Can
A lot of vegetables and herbs that are started in Spring should have been taking off already so make sure you harvest what you can. This rejuvenates the plant and lets it focus on creating more for your next round of harvesting. Anything you can't consume right away can be stored in whatever way works for you. Some people start canning their veggies around this time too!

Utilize Stakes
Your plants are probably getting really tall now so it's a great time to tie them up.  Usually by mid summer my peppers need restaked to help them stand up nice and tall and not get knocked over by any nasty storms we have where we get crazy gusts of wind.  Make sure your stakes and trellises are all sturdy still and if not, readjust them.

And when these things are done, sit back and relax and get ready for your late summer harvest!
