How to Simplify Fall Decor

Tuesday, October 1, 2024

I used to go all out for every holiday when it comes to decorating but over the years it became exhausting and not as enjoyable. Now that I live a more simple life I like to reflect that in my decor for the holidays.  For me, excessive decor looked like clutter and it got to the point where I realized less is more.  So here's to simplify fall decor.

Keep it minimal
I ended up cleaning out my fall decor bins and getting rid of most of it and only kept what I absolutely loved.  I kept only the most beautiful faux pumpkins and the most beautiful high quality fall decor I had.  Those items brought me the most joy and went best with my home style and existing decor. I ended up just putting a few pumpkins on display inside and some mums outside.

Don't over fill surfaces
I used to shove fall decor everywhere I had a square inch of space. Again though it always looked so cluttered so I realized I could just put a few pumpkins around a room and that was enough for me.

Use real decor
I ended up getting some real pumpkins and squash at the store to use for centerpieces in my kitchen and dining room and was able to use them for food after a few weeks and incorporate them into our dinner plans.  I also loved using real mum flowers from my own garden as centerpieces.  This is way less wasteful than purchasing faux florals that take up storage room in the off season.

Use fall colors for standard items
Instead of going crazy with inside decor I just opted for some fall colors with throw pillows and blankets on the couch. I changed my garden flag to a fall theme and used a tablecloth with fall themed images on it.

It's okay to not decorate
Sometimes I'm just not feeling the season.  I've had a rough few years with saying goodbye to our older dogs so it really took away the energy I used to have for decorating and going all out at holidays and I realized that it's okay to embrace that.  I can safely say it didn't impact how much I enjoyed the holidays or celebrated them.

Get festive with activities rather than things
Following up on the last point, instead of worrying so much about decorating for fall, I ended up focusing on fall activities like going to an orchard, painting a pumpkin, and going on nature walks to look at leaves.

Simplifying how I decorate and celebrate holidays and times of the year like fall has truly made it easier to enjoy the bigger parts of them.  Has your holiday decor style changed over the years like mine?
