Let’s explore some of the tips that will help you to take care of your horse while riding:

Warm Up and Cool Down

Similar to humans, horses need to have a proper warm-up before they take part in vigorous exercise. Warming up helps them to increase blood circulation, loosen muscles, and prepare their body for exercise. Start with a few minutes of walking and gradually increase the intensity to a slow trot or canter.

After you have been riding, take the time to allow them to cool down before you put them back in the stables. They need about 10-15 minutes to cool down properly, even during the winter. This will help to reduce the risk of muscle stiffness and allow their heart rate to slow back to normal.

Use The Right Equipment

Using the right equipment is essential for your horse’s safety and comfort during a ride. You need to make sure the saddle fits well. An ill-fitting saddle can cause discomfort and also result in injury. The bridle also needs to be adjusted to fit your horse's head correctly. None of the straps should be too tight.

Additionally, you should consider using protective gear such as horse splint boots to look after your horse's legs and prevent injury. Horse splint boots are specifically designed to protect the lower tendons and leg bones from impact injuries or bruising. These should be considered an essential part of your riding equipment, especially if you are trekking on uneven terrain or show jumping.

Provide Proper Nutrition and Hydration

Regardless of the weather, you need to ensure your horse stays hydrated when out riding. Offer water both before and after riding, but don’t allow them to over-drink after a ride. After they have cooled down for 10 minutes, offer them more water.

You also need to think about providing the right nutrition. Make sure you provide your horse with a well-balanced diet that meets the energy needs for a long ride. You may want to consider horse supplements if your horse has specific health requirements or is training for long rides and shows.

Monitor Your Horse During Rides

Even after you have done all of the above, it is still important that you monitor your horse during a ride. Watch your horse's behaviour and physical condition so you can notice any signs of fatigue. Signs of fatigue include a reluctance to move, head tossing, and ear pinning. If your horse shows these signs, you should give them some time to recover.

You should also check your horse's hooves and legs for any signs of cuts or swelling, especially if you are riding on rough terrain. After each ride, check their hooves to make sure there is no debris or stones lodged in the horseshoes.

You need to take proper care of your horse before, during, and after riding so you can look after your health and keep riding an enjoyable experience. Following these tips will make sure you are keeping your horse in good health and are prepared for future rides.
