Sometimes we go to town when cleaning our homes but we still miss the little details and it never occurs to us that we should include those nooks and crannies in our regular cleaning list. I'll admit that while I enjoy cleaning my home, I still can't seem to remember to clean all of these things on a regular basis so instead I add them to my 1-2x a year task list, and some of them I now do more frequently because it's becoming a habit.
Here are 27 things to deep clean in your home whether it's one in a while or on a regular basis.
1. Vacuum Cleaner
That's right, the thing that does all the cleaning needs cleaned as well. Make sure to clean out filters and replace them throughout the year, remove and wash brush rolls, remove and sanitize wheels, and wipe down all other parts. There's nothing worse than an icky vacuum cleaner.
2. Baseboards
I try to vacuum the baseboards every now and then but it's just easier for me to do a deep clean every 2 months where I use a microfiber cloth and some cleaning spray and actually run it across the baseboards till they're shiny.
3. Bathroom Exhaust Fan
Unscrew it carefully and vacuum it really good. You don't want dust and debris building up and not allowing the air to floor properly.
4. Tower Fans
These things can get so dusty and icky. Take the back off and vacuum it real good and if you have canned air, sometimes that does a really good job of blowing all the stuck on dust out.
5. Dishwasher Filter
Look up your model of dishwasher to figure out how to empty and clean the filter in it. Also wipe down the insides when you can and consider doing a cycle just to clean and sanitize the dishwasher itself.
6. Hairdryer
Lint builds up SO fast in hairdryers so make sure to clear it out and use tweezers for any built up dust that's stubborn.
7. Flat Iron
I know you see that residue buildup on your flat iron ladies! Use a cotton swab with alcohol on it to get it nice and shiny and degunked.
8. Dryer Vents and Hose
If you can't do this yourself, call a professional. Otherwise, look up how to access the hoses and inside of the vent (which you should already be emptying after every cycle) so you can ensure you don't have a fire hazard of lint build up.
9. Ceiling Fan Blades
There's all kinds of fun tips and tricks to clean these but however you decide to do it - just do it! No one wants that stuff flying through the air everytime you run the fan.
10. Cupboards and Cabinets
Not just the inside needs a nice wipe down but the tops should be regularly wiped down even if you can't see it and have to use a step stool. Also clean and sanitize the handles. Trust me - a lot of gunk builds up on them.
11. Wastebaskets
Inside and outside needs cleaned when it comes to the places we throw out trash.
12. Faucets
To descale a faucet, pour some white vinegar in a ziplock bag and use a rubber band to attach it to your faucet then let it sit and soak for a bit. Use a bristle brush to gently wipe off and descale.
13. Microwave
Boil water to loosen things then use a dishrag and vinegar to remove the stuck on stains. Let it air out a bit and make sure you use dish soap on the plate.
14. Curtains, Blinds, and Windowsills
Dust every nook and cranny of these and then use a cleaning solution to degunk whatever is left over.
15. Light Switches
Think of how many times these are touched in a day. Make sure you incorporate sanitizing light switches in your home a regular thing.
16. Dog Bowls and Pet Water Bottles
Once a week I hand wash the bowls my dogs eat and drink out of and for my rats (and any small critters) be sure to deep clean and sanitize their water bottles.
17. Walls
Give your walls a wipe down every month or so and you'll notice your house has a nice shine to it inside.
18. Toilet Bowl
Wipe down the base of your toilet on the outside and unscrew the lid of the actual toilet seat so you can clean there and ensure you sanitize ALL over.
19. In Between
I call the space between appliances and walls the in between because it sounds like a forgotten place we don't travel to (or clean) much. Move furniture and get rid of the dust and cobwebs.
20. Fridge
Not only should you clean inside your fridge but make sure you regularly dust and vacuum behind and as far underneath it as you can get. And always sanitize the door handle.
21. Doorknobs
This is a no brainer because we use doorknobs everyday so be sure you're sanitizing them.
22. Remote Controls
They get so much buildup on them it makes me gag. Sanitize and deep clean these on a regular basis so your buttons aren't so sticky.
23. Shower Curtain
Replace the liner at least twice a year and be sure to launder the curtain itself every 2 months at minimum.
24. Lamps and Ceiling Lights
Dust and wipe down ceiling light fixtures and lamps and their shades. Make sure to dust the cords off too because when they hide behind furniture they can really get grimey.
25. Under Furniture
It can be super hard to reach underneath your bed and couch so schedule a day where you can move things around and get under there to remove dust, debris, and see how many random coins and dog toys you can find.
26. Toaster Oven
Aside from emptying the crumb tray make sure you wipe the knobs and dust the top of this appliance.
27. Stove Hood
It gets grimey very quickly so make this a part of your regular kitchen cleaning routine. Don't forget to actually soak and clean the vent filter too.
Hopefully you've realized there were a few places you have been neglecting!
