Your office is a space to work, whether it's in your home or at your place of employment. It's hard to concentrate and be productive when you're surrounded by mess and chaos so it's time to declutter your office. Here's a list of things you can focus on.
Papers
Scan and digitally store anything you can so that you don't have as many papers. Stacks of papers should be sorted through and properly placed in the place they will be organized and stored. Shred or properly discard of anything you no longer need.
Food
If you have snacks stored that's fine but keep them sealed in a plastic bin out of sight. You don't want to be tempted to snack when you aren't hungry but you also don't want to attract insects and critters to your desk. Wrappers should be thrown out and empties but dirty food storage containers should be washed out and taken home or stored in the kitchen if you work from home.
Clothing
It's fine to keep a sweater on the back of your chair and if you work in an office building a pair of sneakers under your desk is fine but besides that, everything else isn't really necessary. Take clothing home or put it in the appropriate room in your home.
Books and Reference Material
Sort books and reference materials and determine what you no longer need. A lot of things you can look up online so we don't need to keep every manual and brochure. For the things you ARE keeping make sure you sort and store them somewhere neatly like on a shelf. This will then be the designated place to return these items too so you don't just leave them piled on your desk.
Electronics
No longer listen to the actual physical radio on your desk but have it stored there collecting dust for the last decade? Time to get rid of it. Fans or humidifiers you no longer use should be discarded. Keep ear buds stored securely in a drawer and only have one pair. Keep the charger with it.
Office Supplies
We tend to accrue office supplies over time like when we receive documents and eventually pitch them and remove the paper clips. Because of this, it's important to go through your stock at your desk and keep only what you need. Make sure everything is stored out of sight so it isn't collecting dust and dirt, and consider drawer divider bins for things like paper clips.
Cords and Chargers
How many random cords and chargers does one need? Go through and ensure you know what every cord and charger is for and label them with tape (wrap it around one end and write with a marker what it goes to.) If you have excessive duplicates, consider keeping only one or two. Store cords neatly in a drawer.
Decluttering your office allows you to have a neat and tidy space to focus on work and not get distracted. As long as you keep up with it regularly, it should be easy to maintain.
