New Hobbies to Start this Month

Spring has sprung and Summer is on the way and it's the perfect time of the year to start a new hobby or two.  Hobbies are good for the soul. They're a way to destress and keep your brain active.  My hobbies bring me so much joy year round so today I wanted to share some ideas for new hobbies you can start this month.

Read
Whether it's hard copy books, magazines, or e-books, reading is a great hobby to take up.  Reading is good for the brain. It helps you make new connections and visit new places and scenarios.  I love getting lost in a good book.  The cool thing about reading is that you can also read different types of things based on your mood.  Sometimes I enjoy non fiction books but other times I just want fiction that I can mindlessly enjoy and get lost in. And you don't have to spend a ton of money on books - take advantage of your local library for free!

Gardening
Now calm down, because I know a lot of people say they are terrible at growing their own food.  Gardening doesn't mean you have to become a homesteader.  You can simply buy some flower pots and arrange seasonal flowers in it throughout the year and display them at your front door or in your outdoor living spaces.  I even consider pulling weeds gardening because it gets me outside and into the dirt.  Gardening can be very relaxing and it helps to take your mind off the everyday distractions we worry about.

Running/Walking/Hiking
This not only is a great hobby but it's good for your body and mind.  Movement is something that keeps you in tip top shape not just with getting some cardio in, but you strengthen muscles, burn calories, and can kind of meditate while you do it. I personally love running. I do it first thing in the morning when it's still dark out and it's just me and the streets.  I listen to music and get lost in the zone.  After a run/walk/nature walk/hike I always feel super energized the rest of the day and very proud of myself for being active.  You can simply start in your own neighborhood then eventually check out local trails, parks, etc.

Volunteering
Volunteering can look different for each person but the most important part is that you're giving your time and energy and you're doing something productive.  You can volunteer to clean up litter, help a vendor at an event, tend to animals at wildlife rehabs and humane societies or rescues, and make friendly visits at nursing homes or hospitals.

Photography
Now of course photography can be an expensive hobby but with the technology on our phones these days, you can be your own little photographer and get outside and take photos of nature, local events, and city buildings.

Painting
Painting is such a fun hobby of mine.  The thing to remember is that there's no right or wrong way. Art is open to interpretation.  If you want to paint a landscape in your own backyard, go right ahead.  Try portraits based off photos of pets or people.  Paint flowers or fruits.  Or just go crazy and paint abstractly.  It can be a very therapeutic hobby.

These are just a few simple hobbies almost anyone can do.  You don't have to spend a ton of money on a hobby.  Just pick something to occupy your time that makes you happy and then commit to doing it. After all, it's a form of self care.
