Sometimes we are limited on time and energy and of course money so going on long vacations during the summer is just a bit too tricky. That's why I am a huge fan of day trips. You don't need to find a pet sitter, you can be home to sleep in your own bed, and you don't spend nearly as much money. So here are some summer day trip ideas. Museums
There are museums everywhere - some big and some small. There are museums for very niche things and then of course there are museums for a larger selection of interests. Either way - look up museums in your area. Some of them are even free for kids under a certain age. Indoor museums are a great way to beat the summer heat and also great ideas for a rainy day.
Gardens
Depending on where you live there are likely giant gardens (in Pennsylvania Longwood Gardens is one) where you can attend and see all kinds of plants and flowers. They have indoor exhibits and outdoor exhibits and it's also a great way to get inspo for your garden beds at home. We have one in Hershey where they have a butterfly exhibit you can walk through.
Horseback Trail Rides
Whether you are experienced or not, there are plenty of places to enjoy horseback riding. There are even places that do tours on horseback (Gettysburg battlefields for example) and it's a great way to spend time with beautiful horses that are used to having people on them. It's also a unique day date idea.
Animal Exhibits
There are wildlife rescues that put on different events on any given weekend in the summer so make sure you look into them for your area. There are often animal ambassadors there so you can see these guys up close and personal which you can't really do in the wild.
Caverns
If you have caverns in your state, consider a day trip to go underground where it's nice and cool. The gift shops of these places always are fun to explore afterwards.
Science Exhibits
There are often times science based exhibits in museums and other local venues which are great for kids. Many offer hands on experience for kids and it's a great learning experience.
These are just a few general ideas for anyone in any area to look into. What do you like to do on day trips?
