I don't know about you but there are times in my everyday life where life gets super busy, things are happening at work and at home, and tending to my home gets pushed to the side.  Often when this happens I find myself feeling overwhelmed because the physical clutter or mess I see adds to all of the other stressors.  Here's how to declutter to manage those feelings. Do a Quick Declutter
Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed with life, I remind myself the one thing I can always control is my home.  I will do a 5 minute declutter where I go through the house and take anything out of place and put it in a pile or in a bin.  I think put all the the items back where they belong.

Clear Space
When I am already flustered and go to open a drawer to find something and there's simply too much to sift through I get really overwhelmed over stimulated.  One of the easy ways to alleviate that is I will declutter that drawer or that area and reduce as many things as I can.  Why am I sifting through 50 pens if only half of them work? I quickly doodle on scrap paper with each pen and toss any that are out.  Next time I'm in a rush and need a pen I know I can find one, without having the drawer jammed because it's overflowing.

Organizing is Soothing
Sometimes I will reorganize a space especially when it comes to the fridge or a drawer so that it's more neat and tidy.  Afterwards I feel a great sense of accomplishment and also feel very much more in control of my home.

Deep Cleaning Distracts
After an area is organized and decluttered I do a deep clean and that can feel SO REWARDING.  Sometimes just knowing that something needs deep cleaned adds to our invisible mental load.  I know that my shelves were coated in dust so when I recently dusted high and low in that room, I noticed that when I'd enter it, I no longer felt burdened by needing to do it anymore but also the deep cleaning itself help relieved stress and burn a few calories which always boosts my endorphins.

Hopefully these tips help you take back control when things feel overwhelming.
