How To Organize Winter Clothing

As much as I love layering and staying cozy and warm in the Winter, I think we can all agree that Winter clothing is bulky and can take up a lot of space in your closet.  It's also challenging to find temporary storage solutions that work for you and your family. 

Today, I put together some ways to organize and store your cold weather gear so it's easy to get to and easy to put away. 


Plastic Baskets
Plastic baskets make life SO MUCH EASIER when it comes to keeping items like hats and gloves in a central area.  You can get cheap baskets at your local dollar store and place them on the shelf in your coat closet.  This makes it easier to search through them to find what you want rather than keeping them in a drawer that you have to reach back into and shuffle everything around. 

Some people want to use a shoe box but the problem with that is, you have to open it up and there's no ventilation.  If your gloves and hats get wet in the snow, the plastic bins are open on top (and on the side if you get one with holes) so your items can air dry. 

Hangers for Scarves
Sometimes storing scarves in a basket just won't work because until you roll or fold them up you can really only fit 2 in.  So I like to keep mine on a scarf holder hanger or even just a regular hanger where they can lay flay after I fold them in half once or twice.  It's easier to see them to pick the one you want and hanging them allows them to dry after you come in from the snow. 

In the off season, roll your scarves nicely when you store them away or you can keep them folded and hanging in your coat closet. 

Folded Sweaters
Since sweaters can be really thick and bulky and hard to fit into a drawer, I always recommend using some sort of shelf in your closet to keep them folded and stacked.  This makes it easier to reach and grab them and it's easier to put them away.  

Using hangers for sweaters can sometimes damage them as it can leave creases or pull on the fabric.  

Under the Bed Storage
When Winter is coming to an end and you want to store everything away, consider the plastic storage totes that fit under the bed.  This way you can fold everything up nicely and store it away for the next few months.  There are even vacuum sealed bags you can get so it takes up less space.  Since we tend to waste space under the bed, I always suggest storing off season clothing there rather than in another closet.  Leave the space in your closet for your currently worn items so that you have plenty of space to find what you want, and store it in a neat organized manner.
