For most parents, the job of performing essential maintenance is absolutely out of the question when there is so much stuff to do on a day-to-day basis. But it's critical to ensure it's safe for you and your kids. When you are such a busy parent, what does it really take to straddle that balance between maintaining the upkeep, while also ensuring it provides a solid foundation for everybody?
Know the Basics of DIY

While there are major plumbing and electrical issues that can only be done by professionals, the fact is that a lot of people can benefit from a basic knowledge of DIY. When you learn the basics like hanging a picture, fixing small holes in walls with caulk, or unclogging your toilet, this will account for the vast majority of your daily woes. You have to remember that if you are busy with day-to-day activities, a blocked toilet could very well tip you over the edge after an incredibly busy week! Knowing a little bit of DIY will go a long way.
The “Little and Often” Approach to Cleaning

Keeping things as clean as possible may seem like a massive task, but many people think it's better to do a deep clean every couple of weeks, but take a look at the areas where you and your family congregate. Ensuring these places are clean will account for roughly 80% of your cleaning duties. If you've got kids that constantly make a mess, it might be time to lay down the law and get them into the habit of at least wiping a surface down after themselves. This one little thing can do a lot to reduce your workload. And even if they don't do it to your standards, getting them to help is an excellent habit for them as they grow up. If you have lots of carpet, a handheld vacuum is the biggest lifesaver to prevent crumbs, and only takes a few minutes to pick up a few stray items.
Invest in Extended Warranties

There is nothing worse than when the washer-dryer breaks down. It might break down in the middle of a load of laundry or when you've left the basket piled up, and all of your white goods like freezers, refrigerators, and televisions should have extended warranties or an insurance policy that covers damage to help you work around these terrible scenarios. The fact is that we're all so busy, we don't know how to fix the inside of a washer-dryer, and rather than attempting to fix the problem ourselves with limited knowledge, we would benefit from extended warranties.
Lay Down Some Ground ules

You have a lot to do and therefore, you may benefit from incorporating some house rules for you and the kids. Encouraging your children to wash up dishes, tidy up after themselves, and so forth may seem like a lot more hassle than it's worth when they kick back, but in the long run, this is going to help you spread the load and not feel so overwhelmed.
