How to host the holidays without losing your mind

Remember when you were a kid and you were so excited for the Holidays and getting to run around and play with your cousins? You were so amped up for that meanwhile your mom was running around the place like a crazy woman yelling at everyone to help her clean and stay out of the kitchen while she prepares the food.

Fast forward to now, are you that parent?  Are you that host?  Do you love hosting the holidays in your home until the few days before when you realize you need to get your home in order and go to the grocery store? It's okay, because I used to be that person.  And today, I'm going to show you how you can host the holidays and stay completely sane!

Easy Chicken Salad Wraps Recipe with Keystone Meats

Some days I don't feel like eating a super heavy lunch or dinner.  Sometimes it's because I'm not feeling well and other times it's because I don't want to go through all of the cooking efforts.  I try to cut things out where I can by using canned or frozen veggies and ingredients, and buying jarred herbs and spices rather than trying to grow my own.

If you are a lover of all things chicken, especially chicken salad, then this recipe is a MUST HAVE! It's super easy, not very messy (really you use 1 bowl and 1 cutting board), and delicious for dinner OR lunch.

5 Summer Picnic Foods

Monday, August 6, 2018

The thing about summer picnics and the type of food you should bring is that you want to make it something simple, easy, and something that you will want to eat despite the heat and humidity.

Today I put together a few of my favorite go to items to bring when I go out for a picnic or when I need to bring something along to a cookout.

Cheese and Crackers
I mean, who doesn't love cheese? You can make it even easier on yourself by getting pre-sliced cheese that you can eat right out of the packaging.  I like to make pretty arrangements on a cutting board so I always pack one of those along.  This is a great food option when you're going to a winery!

Mini Waters or Wines
Obviously if you enjoy wine, you should bring along mini wine bottles because it's much less mess than pouring glass after glass out of a large wine bottle.  And always always ALWAYS bring mini water bottles to keep you hydrated if you're going to be outdoors!
Subs or Sandwiches
Subs and sandwiches are a GREAT hot weather food because they're easy to consume, a breeze to clean up, and they don't have to be heated at all.

Fruit Salad
Bringing a fruit salad along can be as simple as dumping your favorite fruits into one big container.  It's a refreshing, colorful, yummy treat!

Veggies and Dip
Veggies and dip are cool, refreshing, and healthy.  They make virtually no mess and the colors always look pretty on display.  I like to get things like carrots, celeries, little tomatoes, and then cucumbers because they are full of water and help cool me down in the heat.

What's your go to food to bring along to an outdoor picnic?

Burger Yum in Harrisburg [REVIEW]

Friday, August 3, 2018

Right on the corner of 2nd and South Street sits BurgerYum, a delicious little joint where you can get always fresh never frozen beef burgers that are antibiotic and hormone free!

Right when I walked in I was in love with the inside and the menu. There are plenty of options whether you want a veggie burger, beef burger, or gluten free (a green style burger using lettuce as a bun).  Actually, BurgerYum in Harrisburg is a great place for gluten-free dining because their fries are gluten free and their shakes (except cookies and cream) are also safe to eat!

Once you walk in, they take your order and you can wait for them to call your name while you find a seat outside OR inside.  There's a generous condiment station as well!

I love everything about the quaint burger joint décor inside, from the floor and walls to the tables and chairs.

We received our order in a little under 10 minutes and it was super fresh and warm!  James got the gluten free cheese burger with fries and I got a cheeseburger with parmesan and herb fries and a cookies and cream milkshake.

It was delicious! Seriously I've never had a better burger and I've been to lots of burger joints. I also loved the friendly staff and the seating options.

It's so nice to have a place that is fairly priced for the quality and portions, has lots of seating space, and is gluten-free friendly.  If you haven't been to BurgerYum yet check it out!

How To Make a Cheese Board for National Cheese Day on June 4th

Friday, May 25, 2018

Yeah that's right... National Cheese Day is June 4th.  A whole entire day with a great excuse to celebrate our best addiction - CHEESE!! I swear I could eat cheese everyday and never get sick of it.  I've been known to eat cheese straight out of the bag when it's shredded and I could easily destroy a block of cheese by myself.  Don't Judge Me!!!

So to celebrate National Cheese Day I wanted to make a quick tutorial on how to make an adorable cheese board for the next time you're entertaining.  Some cheese boards have other stuff on them like dried fruits or mustards but I like mine with strictly cheese and some meat since that's what everyone tends to devour most.

Step 1: Get a Wooden Cutting Board
They have cute shapes and sizes of boards.  I have little mini cutting boards that I use strictly for occasions like this. The best part is you can do your cutting right on the board and use it as the display.

Step 2: Purchase
Choose several different varieties of cheese.  I like to get at least one that doesn't have a super strong flavor, 2 with strong flavors, and 1 or 2 spicy flavors.  This gives everyone options and the different cheese taste different with certain wines and other meats and fruits.

Step 3: Cut it
The key to an appealing cheeseboard is if you plan to keep the main block of cheese on there, you don't cut the entire thing at once.  Cut several slices and let them just fall forward which creates an awesome display.  Once the sliced pieces get consumed, you can either cut some more or allow guests to cut slices themselves. With the meats I usually slice them on a separate cutting board and put only the sliced or cubed pieces out on the cheese board.

Step 4: Arrange
This is the fun part but also it's pretty easy.  Just display everything so it looks pretty on the board.  It doesn't have to be perfect at all.  No one will sit there and be like "Oh, wow this cheese board is very unorganized."

Step 4: Serve
Enjoy your art and the delicious taste of cheese!! Cheese boards are perfect for any occasion.   And they're great inside or outside.  People even arrange cheese boards on the go when they are visiting a vineyard or having a picnic.

What foods do you put on your boards?

Healthier Snacking in the New Year

Monday, February 12, 2018

It's a new year and it's time for new, better habits.  One of the major things I struggle with is snacking and making smart food choices.  I can literally go all day eating perfectly and watching my portions but then after dinner I have a few hours before bed and that's when I mindlessly eat.  Sometimes I have the urge to just straight up gorge on food.  People say you shouldn't eat a few hours before bed but it's just impossible for me.  So rather than deprive myself I decided I would just make healthier choices.

I figured I'm not alone in my struggles so I hope that this little selection of healthier snacking choices helps whoever else out there is struggling.

PBfit

I'm obsessed with PBfit peanut butter powder! I already love peanut butter but this takes it to a whole new level.  You just mix some with water (follow the ratio and guidelines of course) and you can use it as a dip, a spread, or bake it into your version of protein cookies! It has 90% less fat and only 1/3 of the calories of regular peanut butter.  And it's still made from real peanuts! It tastes even better than regular peanut butter and it's super easy to mix and prepare.  I use it in smoothies to add some chocolatey peanut butter flavor and I'm loving the simple ingredients.

I even take these little packets to work and I can make the dip right at my desk and eat it with my celery at lunch!   On weekends I mix it in with pancakes and James can enjoy it since it's gluten free!  I really really love how easy it is to add the powder form to existing recipes and it's not a sticky peanut butter at all so it doesn't make for a messy clean up.  I am so shocked I hadn't heard of this product before!

Chocolate

Right now, I'm enjoy Blissfully Better Chocolate. This chocolate is certified organic and sweetened ONLY with low glycemic coconut nectar. This means it gets introduced nice and slow into your bloodstream.  And it has more vitamins and minerals than most other sweeteners.  Another ingredient Blissfully Better has is organic cocoa mass which is the purest form of the dried and roasted cocoa bean.  The reason I stick with chocolate as a healthier snack choice is because chocolate offers benefits associated with healthy stress level maintenance, and helps support normal brain function and enhanced mood thanks to theobromine and phenethylamine.  There is also organic salted butter which is much better for your body than regular butter and organic heavy cream which contain vitamins and minerals.

This is one of my favorite chocolate brands because they have so many choices of chocolate goodies from coconut thins to caramel and toffee thins!

Popcorn

So popcorn is a great snack for me because it fills me up even though it's light and airy. Of course it would be healthier if I just had plain popcorn but I need some flavor! I usually end up getting cheese coated pop corn.  Even though that doesn't make it the best of choices I am still happy because I know it's better than dousing it with butter or eating cheese puffs and potato chips.

Veggies

Yea I know, veggies sound boring but that's why I don't really eat them on their own when I snack on them.  Dipping them in a marinade or soaking them in a marinade before eating really gives them flavor and it's what keeps me drawn towards snacking on veggies.

I have also been having "vegan buffalo wings" and I use marinade to coat the cauliflower.  It's actually delicious and even James loves it! I'm telling you guys if you want to eat more veggies, marinades are the key!

I personally LOVE Moore's Marinade Sauces. They are gluten-free and have awesome flavors to choose from!

And if you want to make vegan buffalo wings just follow this easy recipe below!

Ingredients
1 Head Cauliflower
1 Cup Moore's Buffalo Wing Sauce
1 Cup Gluten Free Flour
1 Cup Water
2 tsp. Garlic Powder
1 Tbsp. Olive Oil

Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Cut Cauliflower into bite-size floret "wings".
Combine the water, flour, and garlic powder in a bowl and stir.
Coat the cauliflower florets with the flour mixture and place in baking dish.
Bake for 18 minutes.
Combine Moore's sauce and Olive Oil in a small bowl.
Pour the mixture over the baked cauliflower then bake for 5-8 minutes.

As I said last month, one of my goals this year was to eat healthier and I'm really trying to focus on that goal right now!  What are your favorite healthy snacks?

If you do the cooking and grocery shopping in your household, you already know how stressful it can be.  The whole idea of dinner isn't just coming home from work to say "What should I make tonight?" and if it is, then no wonder you're so stressed!  Dinner (and any meal) should be well thought out and planned so that it doesn't disrupt your day or add extra stress to your already hectic life.  Besides, if you're trying to eat better then you HAVE TO plan your meals otherwise you end up feeling tired, overwhelmed, and hungry for a frozen dinner.  Hello salt intake!!

How To Have A Perfectly Simple Night In

Thursday, October 26, 2017

Now that we are a married couple we are boring. Just kidding! We have always been boring. No, I'm really just kidding. We aren't boring at all we are just simple and laid back and we like to stay in and relax most nights.   That doesn't mean it's boring because trust me we definitely have fun.  So today I figured I'd put together a post on how to have a perfectly simple night in and really enjoy it.

Choose An Activity
You may not have a ton of choices but I normally choose between a game night or a movie.  Pick your activity and clear your schedules. Let friends know that you aren't available that night!

Limit Phone Usage
If you really want to enjoy a night in, get rid of distractions! That means put away your laptop and tablet and mute your phones!  I actually put mine in the bedroom on the charger so I can't even check it.

Get Your Drink of Choice
Whether it's beer, mocktails, or wine, make sure you stock up on whatever you'd like to indulge in. For me, it's a simple glass of wine and for James it's a simple bottle or 2 of beer.

Choose Delicious Foods
So this is my favorite part of the night. You can indulge in whatever you like but I love making my own little cheese and cracked board!

This part is so easy because really all you need are some good cheese and cracker options.

My favorite crackers these days are Jarlsberg Cheese Crisps! I like to make little cheese and cracker sandwiches but these are also so delicious to have on their own.  In fact they come in different delicious flavors.

As for cheese, I love the Jarlsberg Cheese Snacks and the cheese block.   It has a nice nutty flavor and their cheeses are naturally lactose and gluten free which means James can definitely enjoy them!

And the best part is you can munch away without any judgement because it's you and your house.  And if your spouse is there they can do the same.

This is the perfect idea for staying in on super chilly nights or even once the winter hits and it snows.

And if you are like me and you have 4 dogs - you want them out of your hair so make sure you keep them entertained. I always toss them a treat or two. Purina Pro Plan Tender Strips from Chewy  are perfect because they have a soft texture so it's easy on the tiny teeth my dogs have and they love the lamb flavor! When I want to give them a smaller amount I just tear the treat into bits but honestly, they will take their time consuming this if I give them the whole thing so it keeps them out of my hair! They are really easy for them to digest as well so I can enjoy my night in without having to worry about upset dog tummies!

How do you spend your evenings in?

10 Ways to Avoid Junk Food

Tuesday, June 27, 2017

The older you get, the more of an enemy junk food becomes.  And the more of an enemy it becomes, the more you crave it.  I know there's probably some scientific explanation for why that is but for now, I don't want to focus on that.  Instead, I want to share some tips to help you stop eating junk food and to learn to avoid it.

Junk food isn't just candy and cookies.  It can be whatever you need to avoid.  For me, it's stuff with added sugars, lots of carbs, and pretty much anything processed.

1.DON'T BUY IT
I know I know, it's easier said than done.  But think about it, junk food gets in your house BECAUSE you let it.  So the first place to start is at the grocery store.  Stick to a list and DON'T add junk food to the list.  Resist the temptation in the aisles.  Don't even put your hand on anything because once you touch that box of cookies, it's going to be much harder to put it back on the shelf.  Resist Resist Resist.

2. GET RID OF WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
This is actually kind of liberating.   Sure the common sense part of my brain tries to say "Don't throw that away because you spent money on it!" but in order to start fresh, you need to not have any junk food in your home.  It actually does feel good to slam dunk those packaged snacks into the can.

3. CHOOSE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES
Start thinking of heathy alternatives to junk food and make it a part of your routine.  Instead of a sugary ice cream cone for dessert, choose some fruit.  Instead of regular potato chips, opt for sweet potato chips.  You have to replace your bad choices with good ones.

4. STAY BUSY AND ACTIVE
When those cravings hit you, get up.   Go dust a bedroom, clean the kitchen counters, or tidy your vanity.  If you don't take action, the cravings will start to consume your brain.  Whenever I sit in front of the TV I automatically think "Hm, what should I eat?" so I began to pick up my ipad and play a game on it.  The cravings have passed and now I can beat them simply by not even allowing them into my brain.

5. REMEMBER HOW THEY MAKE YOU FEEL
This is a very helpful tip because once I started doing it, I actually wanted to avoid junk food.   I paid attention to what it did to me.  Carbs made me get sleepy and added sugars made me feel all wound up and then crash shortly after.  So now when a coworker brings in a box of donuts, all I see is "I'll be tired the rest of the day" and it makes me WANT to say no.  If you end up on the toilet right after you eat greasy pizza, remember that next time you go to reach for the phone to order.

6. TELL EVERYONE AROUND YOU
Let your friends, family, spouse, and coworkers know that you are trying your best to avoid junk food.   This helps hold you accountable.  People may stop telling you when there's junk food in the break room.  Your spouse can call you out when you try to eat junk food.  You'll think twice about eating a bag of chips at your desk because you know others can see and scold you.

7. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Avoid junk food at all costs.  Skip those aisles in the grocery store, don't look at what's in the vending machines, and turn right past magazine advertisements for snacks.

8. LUNCH AND SNACKS
If you work outside of your home, come prepared.  Pack a healthy lunch and include some snacks for the morning and afternoon.  If you are already prepared, you won't need to sneak off to the vending machine when you need some fuel after lunch.

9. PLAN WHAT YOU EAT
I don't just mean meal planning.  I mean make sure that food is always a priority.  If you have errands to run on a Saturday, before you get in your car ask yourself if you might still be running around at lunch time.  If so, either adjust your timing so you can be home to make healthy choices for lunch, or bring along a (healthy) granola bar to hold you over.  Impulses get the best of you when you're not in control.

10. PAY ATTENTION TO THE GUILT
So you totally cheated and ate a bag of potato chips.  It's okay.  Just learn from it.   Pay attention to how crappy you feel and how frustrated you are with yourself.  You won't want to feel that way again so make sure you acknowledge that you screwed up and vow to not do it again.

What tips do you have for avoiding junk food?

My Busy LuLaRoe Party Weekend + How Carryout Courier Saved Me

Thursday, May 18, 2017

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

So this weekend was a frickin blast! I hosted my first in-home LuLaRoe pop up and it was also a Tastefully Simple party because my soon to be cousin in law is a TS Consultant.

She seriously made an amazing spread!

So as for the LuLaRoe part... My friend and favorite consultant ever Miss Emily Jang and her friend and assistant Lillian, came the whole way from New Jersey! Not only does she have great customer service but she came the whole way out just so we could meet her in person!

Those are the leggings...

And that was the racks set up with tons of LuLa on them!! It was soooo freakin fun... but by the time it was over (it ran from 1-4pm) I was completely exhausted.   I didn't even want to think about dinner.   That's when Carryout Courier came to mind.   So Carryout Courier has actually been around since 1994.  They cater to York, Lancaster, and Harrisburg and they offer restaurant food delivery service for more than 70 restaurants.   And they will deliver to your home, your business, or even your hotel if you're just in town for the weekend.   You can place your order online or on the phone.

They even offer a full range of catering which is pretty amazing.  Sound too good to be true?  I'm serious!! It's a $4.99 processing fee for Harrisburg, Lancaster, or York delivery.   You still have to add gratuity but I mean come on - that's to be expected because these people bring this food right to your door! And the delivery time is generally 45 minutes to an hour.  They won't place the order with the restaurant until they have a driver available to pick up the meal.

Those delicious burgers are from Arooga's.   We actually had ordered a day ahead of time with a delivery time of 6 pm. I knew I'd be crazy after my party, so we selected our food and got a confirmation.  Then right at 5:55 pm the driver came to my door. He was super friendly and our food was still warm and fresh.

I seriously can't believe how much of a luxury this is.  I didn't even know this existed until the company reached out to me so I could feature them on here.
Seriously - check them out today if you live in the area so you can see what restaurants work with them. There was some great ethnic food ones too!
