How To Make the Most of a Cold Day

Monday, January 3, 2022

Yes, I know, you despise this time of year because it gets dark so soon, it's cold out, and the sun barely seems to shine.  But just because the days seem glum, doesn't mean you can't take advantage of the day.  Here is how you can make the most of a cold day.

Do Some Self Care
Now is the time to really pamper yourself.  Get cozy under the blankets and binge watch your favorite series or fill up the tub and take a nice warm bath.  Give yourself a DIY facial or pedicure if you have the time and energy.  When it's cold outside, turn inwards.  Sip some tea and stare out the window and just take a few moments of quiet for yourself.

Get Crafty
Take advantage of being indoors by embracing your artsy side.  Even if it's just adult coloring books, doing things like this not only kills time but gives your brain something to focus on so you don't sit around feeling bored and hopeless.  Break out the canvas and paint something unique, start using your Cricut to make labels for your pantry, or even consider teaching yourself a new crafty skill.

Be Productive
Just because you can't enjoy being outside, doesn't mean you can't have a productive day.  I know you've been dreading certain tasks like a closet clean out, sorting through the seasonal storage room in the basement, or even doing a deep clean of the house, but trust me it will feel so good when it's done and there's no better time to do it than when you're already stuck in the house.  Turn on some music, grab a drink, and get busy!

Catch Up with a Friend
Now is a great time to catch up with friends and you don't technically have to leave your house to do that.  Of course you can video chat or just do a phone call, but you can also invite friends over for a game night or a movie marathon. Enjoy a few hours of gossip, laughs, and yummy food (order delivery!).

Journal
Journaling is a great way to get your thoughts and feelings out of your head and onto paper.  There's no better time to start than now.  Find a notebook and make it a habit to journal at least once a day just to reflect on your day or week, talk about how the weather is making you feel, or plan your goals for the year.

Bake
What better reason to heat up the kitchen with your oven, than to make cookies or baked goods.  You can eat them yourself or give the away, but baking is fun and time consuming and lets you get in the zone and save yourself from your own boredom.  Try a new recipe or even come up with one of your own. Make sure you share it on social media to impress your friends!

Go Outside Anyways
I run and walk even in the worst conditions.  It makes me feel so much better.  I just bundle up really well if it's a windy day or if it's raining I try to go when there's a brief break in the rain. So go take a walk in your neighborhood or check out a local park with walking trails.  The scenery looks very different than the warm months, but there's still neat things to see all around you!

Put on Some Music
Sometimes you just need some good tunes in the background to make your day better.  A quiet boring house on a cold day is depressing, trust me, I know.  So break out a bluetooth speaker, connect your phone, and find your favorite playlist.  Dance around and enjoy yourself.  I often end up dancing around and cleaning the house when I put music on.  Just get lost in the beat.

Which of these will you be doing on the next cold and miserable Winter day?
