Stress truly is the disease of modern life. We all lead such stressful lives with so many demands on our time from work to kids to elderly parents, and...well, you know how it goes, and it is not doing us any good whatsoever. Our shoulders are getting tighter. Our blood pressure is rising. Our mental health is suffering. We are heading towards burn out faster than we can even see it. We need to get control of our stress.
Easier said than done, right? But we all need to try to take control of our stress if we do not want to find ourselves unwell and unable to do anything at all. The good news is, below, you will find lots of simple things you can do to start melting your stresses away.
Creating a Calm Space at Home
Your environment plays a significant role in your stress levels. If your home is cluttered, messy and noisy, then your mind is likely to be in a similar state too. So, take some time to declutter, clean up and make your home as cozy and calming as you can. It will make more difference than you think having a place like that you can come back to after a hard day at work.
Moving Your Body to Release Tension
Stress often settles into your muscles, especially your neck, back, and jaw. Luckily, lots of small movements can be employed to release that tension pretty effectively. Yoga, stretching, or a simple walk around the block can work wonders for releasing built-up tension, so take even just a few minutes out of every day to move and you will notice that your stress starts to feel a bit less.
Using Massage to Soothe Body and Mind
One of the most powerful stress melting activities you can do is to book yourself in for a professional massage. Massage encourages relaxation, reduces muscle tightness, and sends signals to your brain that it’s safe to unwind, so it really can make a significant difference to how well you feel, whether it’s a simple head massage or a full-body affair that really undoes all those tension knots your body has been forming during the course of a busy week.
Practicing Mindfulness and Deep Breathing
Mindfulness doesn’t require meditation experience or long sessions. It’s simply the practice of being fully present in the moment. Combining mindfulness with deep breathing can lower your heart rate, quiet your mind, and bring your body out of “fight or flight” mode. Try inhaling for four seconds, holding for four, and exhaling for six. Repeat a few times and feel your stress soften.
Finding a Creative Outlet
Being creative takes you back to your natural state as a human and allows you an outlet for all of the stresses and strains of daily life. Whether it’s writing fiction, painting landscapes or crocheting sweaters, do something creative for a few minutes every day, and your stress will melt away.
Here’s to less stress and more joy!
