Tips for [Small Breed] Dog Proofing Your Home

Once you go Chihuahua you never go back, or at least that's the case for me.  There are times when I'm at a friends house and I see their big dog and I enjoy interacting with them but it always makes me even happier to go home to my little dogs.

As much as I love other breeds I don't think I'll ever be able to have big dogs because I'm so accustomed to small breeds and my home is completely small breed proof.  It's like puppy proofing a house for life.  I never have to worry about them getting on the kitchen counter, never have to worry about them jumping a fence, and never have to deal with trying to get them in and out of somewhere by carrying them and having them be too heavy because let's face it - they are tiny.

So today I have some tips on how to small breed dog proof your home.

[1] Valuables Go High Up
I see gorgeous floor décor in some homes like decorative lanterns or wicker baskets.  But we can't have that in my house not just because Rocky might decide to lift his leg but mainly because it's easily accessible for them to get up to no good or break something.  That being said, it's still really easy to just keep valuables on a higher shelf.  The best part is, I know they're safe and can't possibly get knocked down unless by a tall human.

[2] Tiny Things Attract Tiny Bodies
Just because they're tiny doesn't mean they won't get into stuff.  What might be boring for a big dog, is the perfect size and distraction for a small dog.  So any kind of tassel on a blanket that hangs down to the floor, strings and thread that falls on the ground (and can get eaten and twisted in your dog's intestines), and any tiny hole in a fence that a small animal can fit through should be tended to right away.

[3] Cords and Wires Can Be Deadly
Just like with small children, cords and wires should be properly tied so that there's no loops that their little heads or bodies can get stuck in.  We have really nice bamboo shades in the screened in porch but the cords hang down to the floor.  I have them wrapped around little metal posts I hammered into the porch walls but when I don't have them wrapped there, I make sure they are tied and WAY up above Chihuahua level so there's no way an accident can happen.

[4] Mind Those Little Noggins
If a lamp falls over in your house and lands on your Labrador retriever's head, he's probably going to be okay and will shake it off and run away.  If a lamp falls over and hits a Chihuahua in the head, it can have fatal consequences.  Always make sure heavy and easily tippable items are nowhere near the danger zone.  The danger zone is anywhere dogs play, sleep, or rough house.  Pixie always leads the rest of the pack in a wild goose chase around the dining room. Sometimes she can bump into the wine rack, which is why all the wine is secured so nothing can fall and hurt her.

[5] Curiosity Can Be Dangerous
When my pups seem bored like they're getting into no good it sometimes can be because they are hungry.  So I like to give them a treat or two and send them on their way.   However, treats can be dangerous as well and can cause choking hazards.  That's why I choose an easy to consume and digest healthy treat like Grandma Lucy's Pumpkin Treats from Chewy.  My pups love these! They are organic and made with human-quality ingredients and YES I've eaten a few myself. They're so good! They aren't even made in a factory, they're oven-baked. They aren't greasy or crumbly like some treats. I feel like they're just little human cookies!

[6] Be Diligent with Dropped Food
When you drop a rather large piece of food on the floor and your German Shepard gets it, you don't really have to worry about them choking.  But when you drop a large piece of food in a multi-dog household like mine, all 4 Chihuahuas will race to get the food and try to consume it in one fell swoop.  That means there's a major choking hazard so with little dogs you always have to be quick if you drop something.  Also, with spills, especially of something like alcohol you better pick your little dogs up because a few licks from that puddle can be very dangerous for them, whereas for a larger breed one or two quick licks of beer may not effect them.

So even though it seems like small dogs may be easier to handle, you still need to be very mindful of the potential hazards in and around your home.

Do you have any tips for dog-proofing a home?

Things Are Looking Up with Upbra

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

Ahhh ladies, let's talk about one of the most obnoxious tasks women have to deal with - finding a decent bra.  You have to measure and squeeze and fit and adjust and shake and shimmy - all in the name of good cleavage right?   Well, today I'm excited to introduce you to Upbra.  The Upbra bra was developed to be the PERFECT adjustable lift-up and cleavage bra after interviews with hundreds of women to find out what matters to them most in a bra.  The Upbra bra lifts and enhances cleavage but it also stays up during the day and continues to give you that great cleavage look and feel.   It's all thanks to the extra stability from the cleavage lifting action.  Women find that the Upbra bra cups feel nice and natural rather than heavy and padded so whether you're wearing a formal dress or a simple blouse, Upbra bras will give you the lift, cleavage, and security you want.    Upbra bras are such a big hit that the company even has a line of swimwear and they are releasing colors in their most popular style - the Upbra Miraculous Stay-Up Strapless bra.

So what makes it so different from other bras? Well, Upbra bras need to fit snug in order to work properly or fit comfortably.  If there are any gaps you won't get the maximum results.  Their bras come with Cleavage Control Straps that let you adjust in order to get ideal cleavage.  When fit properly, you shouldn't have to go further than the first 8 loops.  Upbra will work with you to figure out sizing and are very customer service oriented.

Upbra bras are hand-crafted by skilled sewers in California and each Upbra bra contains over 100 different design elements. These aren't just regular bras - they are pretty complex which makes them that much more amazing! Upbra's revolutionary Active Lift technology really gives women that push they need - literally.

If you still don't understand how it works - let me clarify.  There are two flexible platforms in each bra cup that are controlled by Upbra's fully-adjustable cleavage control straps.  The platforms are concealed inside the cups under a layer of soft fabric.  The fabric is treated with vinyl hearts and when it's against the body it actually helps grip the breasts and keep them in place after it's adjusted to the desired cleavage level.  Then there's the locking system.  At the bottom of every bra there are evenly spaced slots that the straps lock into.  To create lift and cleavage you take the adjustable cleavage control straps (one in each hand) and pull them across your body.  This activates the dual platforms to move like hands - bringing both breasts together and towards the center of your body.  Once you find the desired cleavage you just hook each of the control straps into the slots of the locking system at the bottom of the bra. And they send you all the instructions when your Upbra order arrives, and it even has pictures so have no fear!

Upbras are amazing. Their size range goes up to DDD and no matter which style you choose, YOU are always in control of your cleavage and lift.
So now that I introduced you to Upbra let me show you the bras I've been wearing. The Maximum Cleavage Strapless Bra is a must have for every woman. Obviously it's great when you are wearing a fancy dress but even in the summer I like to wear sleeveless tops and I don't want bra straps showing.
See the inside of the bra cups? That's where the control straps are hiding.  This bra comes with straps if you want to add them too. So really, it's a staple that you MUST have.  The wings on this bra have a special vinyl that runs along the top and bottom and keeps the bra from budging.  I love that I don't have to worry about constantly adjusting it and pulling it up.  The straps that come with it can be worn in all sorts of ways depending on what top you have on and what your needs are.  And it comes in white, nude, black and red.  Ladies - the nude is for sure a must have!!
My other staple bra in my wardrobe is the Perfect T-shirt Bra.  It's smooth and seamless which allows it to look perfect under thin shirts or dresses without having to worry about seams popping through.  It's seriously so comfortable that I wear it every day and it's amazing to have a bra that is great for everyday wear but can also feel sexy even with low-cut tops or dresses.

This bra comes in nude, black, and white.  And another amazing thing about this bra is that it's great when I need kept in place when I'm really active.  I wouldn't wear it as a sports bra or anything but when I'm doing really physical activity in the yard or around the house I am surprised at how comfortable it is.

Another great thing about Upbra bras are that they are perfect for women with uneven sizing and let's be honest - none of us are even.  You can adjust the cleavage straps for more lift on the side that's lacking.  This seriously solves a million of my problems.

All Upbras are made in the USA and I couldn't be more pleased with my Upbra experience.  So to help you try Upbra for yourself I have a coupon code! Use code WB-10D-11 for $10 off your order at Upbra!

The Art of Gift Giving [It's Really Not That Hard]

Friday, November 10, 2017

Sometimes I hear people say things like "I am so bad at gift giving, I never know what to get someone."  Or they ask "How are you so good at getting the right gifts for people?"

Well, today's post is your answer, folks! It's not rocket science, I promise.  I think what happens is people get nervous when they think of having to "impress" someone with a gift.   First of all, no one (unless they are uber-materialistic) is going to rate you on your gift and most people are just grateful you thought of them....which is why you have to THINK of them when you choose a gift.

So I'm going to walk you through how to pick great gifts for everyone on your Christmas list, and for future holidays and birthdays and other occasions.

[1] Think of the person, not the price/occasion.
You can have a budget in mind but when you are brainstorming ideas for gifts just focus on the type of item someone would like. If it's someone who doesn't like to own a lot of "stuff", an experience (or certificate for an experience) makes a great gift.  If it's someone who loves travelling, think of items they might need like carry-on kits, airplane pillows, or even binoculars if you know they like sight seeing outdoors.

[2] Browse catalogs or gift guides.
Visit some of your favorite websites that have a variety of things to shop for and look up "gift ideas for her/him/parents" or whatever the recipient's relationship is to you.  Bloggers spend time each year making gift guides to give you inspiration.  I get random catalogs in the mail and I may not order from them specifically but I definitely get ideas of items people on my list will like and then I can look for variations of those items elsewhere or for a better price.  Here are some gift guides I've posted over the years.
Gifts for Pet Lovers
Gifts for Men
Central PA Gift Guide
Pretty Things
Gifts for Women for V-Day
Valentine's Day ideas
Gifts for Women
Father's Day Ideas
Mother's Day Ideas

[3] You always win with gift cards.
Gift cards may seem like an easy way out and they are, but you can still be creative with them.   Here are some random examples of how I think myself through what stores someone would appreciate a gift card to.
*For the person who always has car issues and has to replace things (themselves) try a gift card to an auto supply store.
*For the person that LOVES eating out or doesn't get to do it enough, get the a gift card to a restaurant they always go to or even a new place you think they'd like to try.
*For someone who is struggling majorly with money and always living paycheck to paycheck a gift card to a grocery store can be a big relief.
*For the online shopping addict you can always try and Amazon or eBay gift card.
It's not that hard, see? Just think of the traits of the person on your list and then what stores they can benefit from.

[4] JUST THINK!
Some people seem to have everything and you can't possibly get them something they don't already have, right? But you can! Trust me.  Just think what the person likes or does.  Do they always have candles burning in their home? Get them candles or a wax warmer.  Do they love decorating their home? Get them a throw blanket or pillows.  Do they spend time on their porch or patio often? Get them a decorative lantern for their space. Are they an avid/obsessive runner? There are awesome safety items like lights that go on their knuckles, as well as bright headbands, etc.  People that love their dog/cat would appreciate a decorative treat jar.

[5] You can't go wrong with some gifts.
If you're still stressed, just know that there's a few things you can't possibly go wrong with.  Cash for instance can be used on anything.  Spa gift cards will ALWAYS brighten someone's day.  If you know where they get their hair or nails done, a certificate to that place will win them over.

[6] Custom gifts always impress.
You can't go wrong with a customized gift.  Whether you get someone a canvas print of one of the best photos of themselves, their family, or their pet, or you decide to get a customized kitchen sign for the friend who loves to cook, these are always from the heart. The fact that you took the time out to have a welcome mat personalized with their last name, a garage sign (I did this for James one year) for the guy who loves tinkering with his car, or a pet bed with the name of the pet sewn on, for your crazy cat lady aunt will mean so much to them!

So don't panic. Just take some time to think.   Brainstorm on paper if you have to.   I promise you it just takes a little thinking and then you'll be as good as I am! ;)

Tips to Master This Year's Holiday Cards [& Our Card REVEAL!]

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

Ahhhhh Christmas cards! I love getting them.   I know people are doing it less and less it feels like but sending someone a card in the mail not only brightens their day but it lets them stay up to date with your life.  This is my favorite part of the holiday season.  Maybe I'm weird but I just LOVE every aspect of it. I love ordering my cards and getting the package in the mail. I love making my list of who is getting a card and addressing the envelopes with fancy neat writing.  I even love licking the envelopes.  I try to find the small joys with everything in life I suppose.

I always include a photo of the dogs posed with James and myself but this year everything was really crazy.  Obviously with our wedding there was plenty of other stuff on my mind so I didn't get a chance to figure out how/when/where to pose with the dogs and who would take the photos.   So this year I decided to do a photo collage on our card.  This year I got our Christmas cards from Basic Invite. I am so pleased with how they came out and I can't wait to reveal it to you...so without further ado....

Here's our 2017 Christmas Card!

I am so impressed with Basic Invite.  All I did was select the card I liked on their website and then I got to choose color options from their huge selection of 180!   I really love that I got an instant preview of what my card would look like.

You can even order custom samples but I actually just went with a digital sample and that was enough for me. They arrived so quickly - in a matter of 5 days and were packaged so nicely.

There are so many different designs and templates to choose from and right now they're offering 30% off with the coupon code holi30. Definitely consider Basic Invite this year if you need any holiday cards.

So back to YOUR cards....
Yes, I know, it's one more task to add to your big list but it doesn't have to be such a chore. That's why today I'm giving you some advice on how to totally nail ! Today I'm giving you some tips to master this year's cards!

[1] Brain Storm
Do you want to take photos specifically for the cards or do you want to do a collage from existing photos? Do you want to go to a photo place to get family portraits done or do you know someone that can do them in your backyard?  Know what you want to do first.

[2] Know Your Numbers
How many cards are you sending out? Make a list of all the people you wish to send one to.  At this time you should probably ask them for their address if you don't already have it.

[3] Get the Photos Taken
You can have a professional do them, a hobbyist do them, or if you know how to use a DSLR and a tripod with a remote you can do them yourself. I've done it before and it's not actually that hard - and I had FOUR DOGS to get to look into the camera.  For ours we just took one of our patio sofas and put a white sheet over it and then we posed.

[4] Make Your Cards
Basic Invite makes it so easy to make your cards.  Definitely get them done sooner than later because other people will be putting in their orders for the season at the same time.

[5] Send Your Cards
This is the fun part. Send them using your list of names and addresses.  Take your time neatly writing everyone's address (unless you want to use labels to save time).  And now you're done! Until next year of course.

Don't forget to head to Basic Invite to get  30% off with the coupon code holi30.

Bride On A Budget: How We Got Married for Under $2,500

Monday, November 6, 2017

How to get married on a budget

James and I got married in October.   In our usual style we did things different. For starters we've already been together 4 1/2 years and we own a house together.   Maybe if I was ten years younger I'd want to go all out for a wedding but being a homeowner, I just can't justify spending any large amount of money on anything other than our house.  We have plenty of things we want to do to it and we also have 4 dogs, 2 of which have health issues.

After we got engaged I began looking around at venues for a very small wedding.  The first issue was that our guest list had to be 60 which is actually not very many people when the whole idea is for us to celebrate with as many of our friends and family as possible.  The second issue was even with that small of a guest list and with venues that were $0 (just the cost of food and drinks) the lowest price we got to was just under $5,000.  That's still too much for us.  We agreed to split the cost for a wedding anyways but still, $2,500? I just couldn't.

Date Night Details

Thursday, November 2, 2017

We had another monthly date night last month which was our first since we got married.   I love date nights because not only do I not have to cook, but it's a great excuse to actually schedule a night out with each other.

So what did I wear? Well, it was still very nice weather (70 degrees or higher) so I went with open toed wedge sandals.   They look high but they are insanely comfortable.  I of course had my favorite black bag - a Rebecca Minkoff with me.

And rather than an LBD I opted for a little black and white striped dress.  It's actually a LuLaRoe Julia and it is so comfortable!   It was a great night and we went to Piazza Sorrento in Hershey which has amazing gluten free options and James loves the place! So did I, of course!

Do you schedule regular date nights with your other half?
