These days pant legs come in many different shapes. Each one can pair better with different types of outfit and may flatter a certain type of figure better. Below we’ll explain the difference between 8 of the most popular pant leg styles.
Straight

Straight-leg pants fall in a clean line from the hip to the hem. They’re the ultimate ‘go with everything’ choice and therefore should be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. Designed to skim the body and not cling, they’re particularly well-suited to work or environments where you don’t want any restriction.

Skinny

Skinny pants are designed to closely hug the legs, accentuating each curve. They’re perfect for tucking into boots or balancing with oversized tops and long coats. While they tend to be the most restrictive type of pants, you can make them more comfortable by choosing options made with stretch fabrics.

Wide

Wide leg pants are the most roomy option and are excellent for providing ventilation in hot weather. They can take the form of tailored trousers or more casual beachy palazzos. Consider creating contrast by wearing something figure-hugging on top. Alternatively, you can pair with a baggy t-shirt for a matching oversized look.

Barrel

Barrel leg pants curve outwards at the thigh and knee, but taper in slightly at the ankle for a ‘balloon’ look. Options like these barrel leg trousers for women have become very trendy in recent years - offering the comfort of wide leg pants without the bagginess around the ankles. They can be full length, but many are cropped.

Flared

Flared pants had their heyday in the 70s, but have been seeing a comeback in recent years. These pants are closely fitted at the hips and thighs, but gradually widen below the knees to the ankles. Choose between subtle flared pants or dramatic bellbottoms depending on the occasion. Flared pants complement many body shapes and can often make the legs look longer.

Tapered

Tapered pants are relaxed at the hip and thigh but gradually narrow towards the ankles. They’re pretty much the opposite of flared pants in this regard. Barrel pants are a type of tapered pants but are typically baggier towards the top. Most people choose tapered pants when they don’t want the hem to get in the way of their footwear but don’t want the clinginess of skinny jeans.

Bootcut

Bootcut pants have a gentle flare from the knees down that provides just enough room for boots. They are not as extreme as flared pants. Many bootcut styles can have a leg-lengthening effect and pair well with ankle boots ranging from cowboy boots to stilettos.

Cropped

Cropped pants are cut off above the ankle to reveal a bit of skin. They’re good for highlighting shoes and can offer a bit of ventilation in the summer. The height of the hem can vary, with some cropped jeans finishing mid-thigh while others end a bit lower. Make sure that they are fitted so that they don’t look like you’ve bought the wrong size pants.
