My Favorite Flowers to Grow

Wednesday, May 20, 2026

I've talked about my favorite veggies and herbs to grow each year but now it's time to talk flowers.  I am so excited to share some of my favorite flowers to grow in my garden.
Rudbeckia
I choose this because it's a native so it does really well in my yard and it grows back so big each year I have to split the plant which means I get free flowers to transplant in other parts of my yard without spending a single cent! The pollinators love it and I think they're just beautiful.

Coneflower
I again choose this flower because it's native so the pollinators absolutely flock to it. It is easy to maintain and comes back each year. It also spreads like Rudbeckia so I get to split the plants and transplant to new areas each year for no money at all.  I love the different colors it comes in also! And they last into late Summer so the color keeps going even after a lot of Spring blooms die back.

Daisies
Daisies are pretty and look great in bouquets so I have several plantings of them around my yard.  They come back each year and the only pruning I do is deadheading them once they're done blooming.

Bee Balm
I don't pick Bee Balm but I love the bright color and the way it attracts butterflies to my yard. It is a native so there's no maintenance and it comes back each year.   My favorite color is hot pink!

Joe Pye Weed
This is a native plant and it smells and looks great and the pollinators practically fall asleep getting pollen from it. It grows tall so it's nice to put in the back of a garden bed and it comes back each year.

Tulips
I love them because they are the first flower to emerge in the Spring so it gives me something to look forward to.  I can also dig up and split the bulbs if I want to.

Peonies
My absolute favorite flower is the peony and I finally have a peony bush in my yard. The smell and look of the flowers are amazing but the only downside is that by early Summer the blooms are gone.  They also come in amazing bright colors and are my favorite thing to put in vases and bring inside.

Gomphrena
If you think you never heard of this - I can tell you that you've seen it. Gomphrena flowers dry so well and are tiny spiky looking balls so they are easy to craft with and add to flower arrangements.  They are super easy to grow and the more you prune them to use them, the more they grow bigger and better.
