Fitness/Weight Update || Updates, Achievements, Hurdles

Thursday, July 5, 2018

So the last 3 months I've been actively working on my fitness and diet habits.  I've been working out every other day during the week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and both days on the weekend.  When I don't work out I make sure to achieve my step goal on my Fitbit Versa, and I carefully have been watching my calorie intake.

Which speaking of, the Fitbit Versa is awesome! It makes me so much more motivated to stay active.  I love that I can change the backgrounds and it's so easy to check all of my stats.

So hurdles....well, I basically took almost the entire month of June off from working out because I legit was just so busy. I started driving for Uber and Lyft in my free time to make more money and make up for blogging being slower in the Summer so between my full time job, blogging, driving, the dogs, and volunteering I've just run out of time.  But the good thing about that is I have less free time to binge eat so I've been losing weight still.  And I'm still pretty active from all the chaos so I still got my muscles!

As for my achievements... I got my booty back! After the entire month of May doing cardio and strength I noticed I got my butt again! I love it!

And here's a photo that shows my progress with how my legs and arms look. I have just a few pounds to go and I'm sure by August I'll be there.

How have you been doing?

How I Changed My Relationship With Food

Monday, January 2, 2017

If you read my recent post about how I'm on the path to a new healthier lifestyle, you'll notice I changed my eating habits.   But today I wanted to get more in depth with that topic.   In order to change my eating habits I had to change my entire relationship with food.  That's not something you can just do overnight, trust me.  Even if you do it with in a week, it doesn't mean it will stick.   So here I'm going to break down how I changed my relationship with food in a natural way so that it's now part of my lifestyle.

Educate
In order to understand how food benefits you, you need to understand the point of food and look at it as something that nourishes your body rather than something you do for fun.  So I read all kinds of books about food and nutrition, but my favorite was The Body Book by Cameron Diaz.  I actually took notes and memorized information on things like simple vs. complex carbohydrates.  What clicked for me was remembering back in the day before I was ever even on this Earth, when humans had to work hard at every single thing.  Back in the primitive days all you did was move and expend energy. You woke up, tried to keep warm, explored, hunted and prepared your food, etc.  Everything you did burned calories.  Food in turn, was a way to give your body nutrients it needed after all that hard work.

I had to channel my inner cavewoman.  If I were living out in the wild, what kind of things would I eat to survive? It certainly wouldn't be processed and pre-packaged foods. It would pretty much all be things found naturally outdoors.  Heck, I wouldn't even be eating bread.  Bread is processed from wheat.  So technically I would be eating meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, and grains.  Ever hear of a paleo diet? Yup, that's what it pretty much is.

The next step was reconfiguring what I allowed into my body on a daily basis.

Carbs
So here's the thing about carbs, some people avoid them, some people don't.   I started to pay attention to what carbs like bread did to me.  It made me feel full but also made me feel tired the rest of the afternoon.  I don't like that feeling.  We all need carbs of course but the way you get them is what you need to focus on.   While I love burgers, I don't like how the bun makes me feel, so I began having burgers without buns or even just with two pieces of lettuce as the bun.  I noticed that I actually had more energy.  And I never felt sickeningly stuffed.    I also changed my relationship with potatoes.  I love sweet potatoes and they are just a bit better for you than white potatoes so I always make my own sweet potatoe fries at home and I love the sweet taste that comes naturally with them.

Sugars
Ugh sugars.  Added sugars suck! They totally mess me up.  I feel hyper, then tired, and I know it's nothing but crappy calories.  So I cut out added sugars.  I don't put creamer and sugar in my coffee anymore.  I learned to like it that way after a few weeks, too.  I noticed how sugar was in SOOOO many things.  I love cereal but man, there's too much sugar in it for my liking.   So as I started to choose more natural foods (like paleo diet stuff) I realized sugar wasn't in them.  If I have a sugar craving I'll eat some fruit but even then, I get gassy and bloated feeling from certain fruits so I'm always mindful of what I choose.  Because I took the time to pay attention to what I was eating and then how I felt because of it, I realized what foods were worth eating for me and what foods weren't. Another great benefit of doing this, was that the less I had sugar, the less I craved it.

Salt
UGH! Salt!!  Sodium is in so many processed foods especially lunch meats.  While we all need salt in our diet, there's an appropriate amount we need and most of us go well beyond that.   So I started looking at every label of everything I would buy and eat.  I noticed that if I was at a restaurant and ate something that left me feeling thirsty, it probably had a lot of salt in it.  I don't feel bloated and my skin doesn't seem so swollen all the time like it used to from eating so much salt and added sugars.

Processed Foods
I quickly learned that eating packaged and preserved processed foods was a recipe for disaster.  Most of it contains tons of sodium and too much sugar.  My excuse was always "But I'm too busy to eat anything better." So I stopped using that excuse.  I learned about fresh foods that could easily be whipped up for dinner. I make my own pizza instead of buying frozen pizza.  When I got a craving to eat something out of a bag or a box as a snack, I instead snacked on fresh veggies with hummus or guacamole.  They are still easy snacks but they aren't full of crap.   Am I perfect? Absolutely not.  Do I claim to be? HELL NAW!  For instance, the way I am in the morning I need to eat fast and do my routine.  So I eat Belvita Breakfast Bites.  I know, they're processed foods.  But it works for me.  And I try to keep that the extent of it.  For lunch I have guacamole, carrots, and some peanut butter on a whole wheat tortilla (I roll it up, it's something I ate as a kid and it's quick and easy to eat at my desk at work).   For dinner I eat fresh whole meals.

Shopping Habits
My entire set of shopping habits transformed within no time.  I BARELY visit the inner aisles at a grocery store.   When I worked in retail many years ago someone told me that grocery stores are set up with all of the healthy and fresh ingredients on the outside aisles.  You'll know you're doing it the right way if you barely even visit the inside aisles.  It's true!   Grocery shopping is so much more enjoyable now because I'm not weaving in and out of every single aisle.  Sweet potato fries in the frozen section are cool, but I like to make my own... so I don't even have to go to the frozen section that often unless I'm getting frozen veggies (onions, corn, etc).

The other thing with my shopping habits is that I save a lot of money.  People think buying fresh and wholesome foods is expensive but actually, packaged foods are more money.  I have receipts to prove it.  So I have been saving money, and the food I buy keeps me full so I don't feel like snacking all evening. When you eat more nutritionally dense foods, you are satisfied for longer.  Think about it. Ever notice how you feel completely stuffed after you eat Chinese food, but then within 2 hours you're hungry again? That's because there's no nutritional value to it so it just goes right through you.  But if you eat protein and vegetables, it makes you feel satisfied for hours to come.

And I now have a rule that if I shouldn't be eating it I don't buy it.  If I buy crappy food, I'm more likely to reach for it when I get a craving.   I still get cravings, trust me! But the most damage I can do is tearing into a bag of chocolate chips (for baking) and munching on those.   Still less damaging than eating a ton of oreos and chips!

Food As A Reward
I used to allow myself to eat bad food on a "special occassion".  The second I stopped that, it was easier to keep myself in check.   The more I justified eating crappy food, the easier it was to get into poor eating habits again.  So when there is a celebration at work, I don't eat.  I actually walked into the conference room one day and instead of seeing cookies, a flour/egg casserole, and fruit I literally saw it as - Added Sugars (wired then tired all day), Carbs (snoring by lunch time), and gas attack in the office (the fruit).  So it was easy for me to say no because I knew I didn't want to feel the way those foods make me feel.

Food As A Habit
Whenever I was happy I ate. When I was sad I ate.  When I was bored I ate.  When I was busy I ate.  I had to stop that.  So I did.   I always log what I eat on my Fitbit because it makes me more mindful of when I'm eating.  I've actually stopped reaching for a snack because I didn't feel like logging it.

Now what happens when I'm on the go and I don't have time to eat right? Do I get fast food? NOPE, never.  Unless it's the only thing around and I'm in the middle of nowhere, I won't do it.  I won't even eat at Subway anymore because I know the bread and lunchmeat combo isn't best for me.  Instead I'll stop in at a grocery store and get a salad to go.

I also plan my day around my meals.  If I need to run an errand, I do it either before or right after lunch so I can eat at home.  Or if I know I'll be out and about over lunch, I bring something healthy to munch on.

So I hope that my experience has given you some tips and maybe even some motivation to work on your own eating habits.   Remember, the first step is to educate yourself so get out there and do it!

3 Changes I've Made to My Diet

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

Warning - I'm gonna brag in this post!  In the past month and a half of lost weight and inches in an effort to take back my health.  Some people have been asking what changes I've made so I figured I'd do a blog post about it.

{1} Less Carbs
I do love carbs, especially with pasta but I have really been trying to avoid them lately. And it's really helping me drop weight.  So instead of my usual ground beef and brown rice, I opt for veggies like bell peppers or broccoli.  They still fill me up but they don't have nearly as many calories as rice would.

Since I'm cutting carbs that means I have to cut out more foods like pizza, and sandwiches with bread. Instead I eat the meat and the veggies so I'm getting protein and my vitamins and nutrients that I need each day.

{2} More Protein
Since I'm working out 4 days a week I need protein so my body can help build muscle.  I have been eating ground beef during the week because first of all I love it and second of all I just can't do chicken.  I think chicken is so boring! Don't hate me!

{3} Smarter Snacking
I used to snack on all sorts of things but now I'm being really smart about what I consume. I hate feeling hungry so I needed to find a snack that would help me feel full AND benefit my body.   So I've discovered New Zealand Jerky and I'm obsessed!  It comes in three flavors - Original, Peppered, and Teriyaki and it contains no GMOs.  It's so delicious and packed with protein which helps me feel fuller and also gives my body the protein it needs.   New Zealand Jerky infuses real wood smoke during the cooking process of their jerky so it has an AMAZING flavor.   You have to try this stuff, seriously!!

So that's what I've been up to. Keep following along so you can see my health and fitness progress!

My Secret in Addition to Nutritious Food and Exercise

I've been running again and eating healthy and cutting out stuff like added sugars.  I've really been seeing a difference in my waistline but I also have to give credit to my other little secret... SlimQuick Pure Extra Strength Mixed Berries Flavor Gummies.

That's right... these little gems can help you lose 3x the weight (over a 13 week period)  as long as you are also doing other things like diet and exercise.  They are stimulant free and have Bio Pure Green Tea and a delicious mixed berry flavor.  There's no artificial colors.   I just took 2 of them twice a day with water and a small meal or snack.   I noticed a significant shrink in my waistline over the first month.  SlimQuick knows how obnoxiously difficult it is for women to lose weight because our bodies are designed very different than that of a man's.   I definitely felt an energy boost and I also noticed that I didn't have insane cravings for food.

I definitely plan to keep using this product!!!

In addition to that, I've been running at least 4 days a week and I've been keeping up with my healthy eating habits. Hooray for me!

I Even Stay Organized with My Diet

Tuesday, September 30, 2014

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

I'm obsessed with organizing and I find that being organized helps me stick to a healthier lifestyle.  So it's no surprise that I'm eating healthier at lunch now because I can organize my food!   I am obsessed with Laptop Lunches from Bento-ware!

This little gem is the bistro bento box.  It comes in the beautiful color I chose and it's made of durable plastic that is microwave safe and dishwasher safe!
I have been majorly slacking on my healthy lunches and I end up either having just a sandwich, or I only eat half because I'm just miserable.    So I figured if I have a little more fun with lunch prep, it should help. And it did!
Inside my Laptop Lunch is a sandwich box, a little container with a lid for fruit or any other side, and a lidless container (the Laptop Lunch lid actually acts as the lid for this one for anything else! The possibilites are endless. I love the silverware slot! I actually use it for my string cheese.  I put fresh apples in the one container and some granola in the other.   And you can actually get different Bento Buddies for different configurations.

Does it make life easier for me? Heck yes it does!   I just get home, rinse out everything, and repack it for the next day.  Then when I am getting ready to head to work in the morning, I don't have to worry about shovig my sandwich in my purse and having it squished.   That's because the Laptop Lunch box is sturdy and protective.  Then even if I toss it around while it's in my purse, the two lidded containers inside are water-tight.   And for those of you that love being healthy all the way around, not only is this product free of phthalates, BPA, lead, and PVC but it's also made proudly in the USA!
Seriously, this is awesome!   If you are a mom, you will love this for your kids.  And if you are an employee who packs their lunch daily, like I am, and already carries too many bags to work (work bag and handbag) you don't  need a 3rd! So just carry your Laptop Lunch in your existing bags or under your arm.  I seriously will never use a lunch bag ever again!

PS - What do you pack in your lunch? I want some ideas!

That's right you can still enjoy the taste of chips even when you are sticking to a diet and fitness routine.  In fact Quest Nutrition's latest product, Quest Protein Chips is the world's first high-protein snack chip.

It's low in carbs and gluten free and it's actually good for you!  You can choose from Sea Salt, Barbeque, and Sour Cream & Cheddar.  They come in a personal sized 1-1/8 ounce bag.
It's a great way to get your protein and satisfy your crunchy snack food craving.  This seriously helps me so much. I can really stick to my healthy diet now and the protein in these helps me with my fitness.  They are so delicious. They don't taste like your typical healthy snack food either.
What flavor do you think you would like best?    Did you try these yet?

3 Ways I Get My Protein

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.
Sooo I have a fitness update and it's good and bad.

Last week I was dealing with Achilles Tendonitis.  It was terrible and I only ran one day! But thanks to heel wedges, icing, heat pads, and keeping my foot wrapped, I think I'll be okay for the 5K this weekend!  Anyone have any experience with achilles pain?

On to my diet...

One of the big changes I've made in my life aside from running almost daily is making sure I get enough protein.  The thing about that is I'm picky.   I hate protein bars that you  have to choke down and I can't stand protein shakes that don't taste good so Cascadian Farms and their new line of Protein products has worked wonders for me!
So here are my 3 ways to get protein:

1. Honey Roasted Nut Chewy Bars
Not only are these great because they are chewy so they are easier to eat but the flavor is amazing!  And of course like everything else from Cascadian Farm it's organic.  I get 9g of protein per serving too!

2. Snacking on Dark Chocolate Coconut Granola
Sometimes I just grab a handful and go!   I love the flavor of the Dark Chocolate Coconut Granola. It's crunchy enough to satisfy my craving but it doesn't cut the inside of my mouth like other granola's have in the past.

3. Apple Crisp Granola Cereal
Well, I love cereal so when I add some milk to Apple Crisp Granola I get a lovely crispy snack!   It's great in the evening or even on a morning where I need to run and I want some protein beforehand.

This coming weekend is my 5K!  I am so excited and can't wait to see how I do!  I've been running 3 miles for weeks now, pretty much at 10 minutes per mile so I will update you after this weekend!

Fitness Progress// Improving My Time + Healthy Snacks

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

So I've been running almost daily for the past few weeks and I'm very proud to say that there has been some major progress.

I am really paying attention to what I wear and investing in quality running apparel and shoes so that I can kick some serious ass in my first ever 5K at the end of August.

I ran 2.51 miles in just 26 minutes and 7 seconds!
Yay go me! I make sure to pace myself and whenever I feel my lungs starting to really get winded, I walk for 2 houses (on my street) then continue to run again.  It's really helped me step up my time.

As for meal planning I've been doing great except I'm growing sick of chicken as my protein source for dinner so as of this week I'll be switching to fish! I'll have more on that next week.

And fresh fruit is an amazing snack let me tell you!!

Next thing to work on... Late night snacking.

Any tips?

Outfit of the Day: Go Hard or Go Home

Friday, July 18, 2014

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

In order to prepare for my first ever 5K at the end of the Summer, I've been running almost daily.  One thing I can tell anyone who wants to run regularly is that you should always  choose quality fitness apparel and that's what I found in this running outfit!

The pants were amazing and are from Onzie. Onzie makes yoga and fitness apparel that is functional, flexible, and flattering.  They offer a simple selection of one pieces and separates that are great to wear when you are going to swim, sweat, or loung around.  Their prices are FANTASTIC and the quality is amazing.   The capri pant I received in Meadow was gorgeous! They are durable and breathable thanks to their Free-Flow Fabric Technology that keeps your body cool, dry, and comfortable.  It's perfect for running since I sweat A LOT and by the time I took these figure-flattering capris off, I was all dry.   They were so comfortable! Oh, and they are made in the USA!

The top is one of my favorite tank tops and it's from Hard Ninety.  Hard Ninety offers a line of badass, stylish, form-fitting, quality work out clothing.  This tank top was ribbed so it flattered my shape, and it was super comfortable.  100% cotton made it breathable and perfect for when I sweat during my run.  I love Hard Ninety's logo, it's very edgy and matches my personality perfectly.

So What I Wore:
Sneakers - Therafit; Capri Pant - Onzie; Tank - Hard Ninety; Sports Bra - Champion.

Why Organic is Worth It

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.
Organic products are all the buzz lately and for good reason. Organic ingredients and products are much better for our bodies than some of the things we put in them already. At  Cascadian Farm  they are proud to offer organic products!

I got to try out some of the Cascadian Farm products and I love them. Their Graham Crunch cereal is my new favorite.   It tastes so good and is a great snack which isn't overpowering with sugar and sweetness.   Their Pea Protein Bars are a perfect pre workout snack after work.  They are filling and really give me the protein I need in my diet.

So why is organic worth it?   Well this should explain more!

I hope that helped explain things a little more! I highly recommend checking out some of the amazing products from Cascadian Farm!

A Month Without...Candy

Monday, March 31, 2014

I'm participating in my own little project called My Year Without. Each month, I go without something different.

January was texting and driving.   I actually did pretty good!! I refrained from even checking my phone at a stop light.   It made me realize how dangerous it really is to be distracted by a phone when driving.

February was cursing but that didn't work out to well.  I never curse around situations where it's not appropriate anyways so I'm not really worried about it.  Behind closed doors I can express myself however I wish.

March was spending.  I didn't but things I didn't need and this was actually a huge success.  Aside from groceries and paying bills, I was able to restrict my spending and I even paid off my 2nd to last credit card!

April is going to be candy.  No snacking on jelly beans, chocolates, or anything else that people normally sneak throughout the day.  And yes, I'm well aware that April is Easter, and that's fine!

What can you live without this month?

Easy Way to Drink the Recommended Amount of Water Each Day (DIY)

Monday, September 23, 2013

It’s annoying to have to drink so much water but it’s what’s best for your body.  They recommend 64 oz. of water daily or anywhere from 4-6 glasses.

I found a fun way to ensure I drink the right amount of water each day without having to guzzle it all at once.

All you need is a marker or some Washi Tape and you can do it too.

Give yourself different lines with different times of the day on it.  For instance:

You can put 3 lines of tape on a 32 oz. water bottle.

Mark the bottom line as 9 am, the middle as 10:30 AM, and the top as 12 PM.  Then turn the bottle around and label the other side of the bottom as 2:00 pm, the middle as 4 PM, and the top as 6 pm . There you go.  If you drink those amounts (and fill the 32 oz. bottle up again) at those times, you’ll find it’s easier to get the recommended amount of water.

How I Mastered Portion Control

Thursday, July 5, 2012

Since starting my journey to reach my health and fitness goals in January, I think I've come a long way.  I worked out a lot up until June.  Then in June, I reached a point where it seemed I just needed to trim some fat, and I knew portion control would help.  Prior to that I counted calories which I began to realize, was NOT working.  I wasn't eating proper portions.  If I could consume an entire Subway sub and not go over my daily caloric goal, I did so.  All that did was make me hungrier and hungrier.  The key to portion control is keeping portions small, so your stomach is smaller, so you fill up sooner.  You can snack a couple times during the day to satisfy your hunger, but keep the portions small.

Basically what I did the past month was:
Breakfast:
1 cup of coffee w/ creamer and sugar
1 chocolate chip muffin with butter

**I know, it may seem filling, but it was, and it was what I need to kick start myself in the morning.

AM Snack: 100 Calorie bag of snacks from the snack aisle at the grocery store

Lunch:
A Spinach Salad
or
Leftovers from the night before whether it be Pizza, Sub, or leftover Chinese, I still kept my portions small.  Also, I eat tuna packets on a regular basis.  They come with crackers and mayo.  Even if I ate a crappy lunch like a slice of pizza, I kept it small. One slice is better than 3!

PM Snack:
A protein bar (200 calories usually).  This gave me energy between lunch and dinner and I work out when I get home so by the time I get home from work, I had an extra burst of energy!
Dinner:
Meat, veggies, rice is what I have most often.  I keep the portions small and the second I start to feel satisfied I stop!

Tips for Portion Control:
- To teach yourself portion control, leave a little bit left on your plate from each type of food during every meal.
- Don't go for seconds!
- If you eat a bit more at dinner you will be less likely to snack before bed.

So I trimmed a lot of fat off of my midsection which was my problem area before.  I am still amazed! I've totally adjusted to the smaller portions after about 2 weeks.  I used to be starving when it was time for my AM and PM snack, but not anymore.  I dropped a couple pounds within a month.  And now, when I try to eat too much, I literally feel stuffed so I can easily stop myself!!

Anyone else have any other tips or success stories? Please feel free to share below! And remember...you CAN do it...I did!
