Tried and True Life Hacks

Monday, January 20, 2020

If you’re anything like me, you squeal inside when you stumble upon an article about life hacks. There’s always different ones each time it seems. Today I’m going to share some of my own lifehacks with you guys. These are ones that I’ve discovered elsewhere or just figured out myself that I use on a regular basis to save money, time, and energy or to just make life a bit easier.

Set clothes out the night before or on Sunday night, so you save time in the morning. This makes you more likely to choose decent outfits and have fun accessorizing. I usually check the weather for the week so I can dress accordingly.

Use velvet hangers in your closet. They take up less space and your clothing won’t slide off them.

When you buy fresh asparagus, keep it upright, in a bowl of water. It will look like flowers in a vase but it really does make the asparagus last longer and stay fresher till you need to use it.

Keep a sticky note on food items that you have multiples of, letting people in your home know that the one with the sticky note is the one to use first. This prevents multiple bags or boxes being opened and then going bad.

You can still drink milk past the expiration date. I promise. Just give it a sniff first.

Just buy pre-chopped frozen onions from the store. It’s not worth crying your eyes out over.

Save your coffee grounds and egg shells and use them in your garden. Rinse the egg shells and let them dry, crush them up and sprinkle in your garden beds along with the loose coffee grounds.

Always keep a doggy mess bag tied to the handle of every dog leash. This way you will never be without if you forget to grab the dispenser as you leave the house for a walk.

If your second day hair is a bit greasy and limp, flip your head over and run the hair dryer at your roots while tousling them. A spritz of dry shampoo afterwards will make a big difference.

Save money on magazine subscriptions by asking your coworkers if they’d be interested in swapping magazines they subscribe to with you. Keep track of who pays for which subscription.

Use a microfiber rag to wash your windows. It’s less likely to leave streaks.

The 1 in 1 out rule helps prevent you from bringing too much into your home. You can’t get a new jacket unless you donate an old one. Your closet will stay more organized when it’s not stuffed to the brim with so much.

Stepped in dog poo? Let it dry, head to a gas station, and blow it out with an air compressor. If you have one at home, even better!!

Make your own centerpieces for your dining table by saving a bouquet of flowers you receive, hanging it upside down to dry, and then placing it in the empty vase when it’s completely dried. Flowers are flowers!

Keep a flashlight in the following places: nightstand, glove box, junk drawer, and utility closet. You’ll always be covered when you need one in a hurry.

Just thought of something you need to remember later? Text or email it to yourself right away!

Donate old magazines to a nursing home for the residents to enjoy when they need some reading material. Do the same with your old books.

Wash your bras in those little net bags that are made for delicate items in the washing machine. It’ll extend the life of them and they’re less likely to get tangled, knotted, or hooked on other clothing.

Feeling like you’re about to have a meltdown. Stop! Focus on your breathing. Give yourself a hug. And do one final big breath. It’s going to be okay!

Journal every day. No matter what you write, it’s healthy to get the thoughts swirling in your head down on paper so you have a clear head.

  1. I used to plan my whole outfits out for the week and then stopped. I so need to get back in to the habit of doing it again.
