6 Reasons To Shop Second Hand This Year

Monday, January 13, 2020

We live in a highly commercialized society with advertisements and marketing enticing us to spend every which way we turn and as a result, our world is suffering. 2020 has been labeled the year of action against climate change and just one of the ways you can make a difference is by reducing your consumption of the world’s valuable resources and switching to shopping second hand. Not fully convinced? Then here are 6 reasons to consider shopping second hand this year.

1. You’ll save yourself money
99% of the time there’s no need for the things you buy to be brand new and you’re just spending more money for the privilege of being the first to use or wear something. Whether you’re looking at used jewelry for sale or browsing the internet for a second-hand sofa, second-hand products are almost always cheaper than their new alternatives saving you a huge amount of money. Think of all the things you could do with a little extra cash in your back pocket whether that be traveling, learning, donating to charity or saving, you’re bound to feel good for it.

2. You’ll stand out from the crowd
With so much of what we consume now mass-produced, it’s quite common to be walking down the street and to spot three different people wearing the same pair of trousers. Similarly, enter three different homes and they’ll all have the same furniture from Ikea. Buying second-hand helps you to stand out from the maddening crowd, to express your individuality, to find unique, old, classic pieces and to give them a new lease of life.

3. You’ll help good causes
One of the biggest sources of second-hand goods is charity shops, taking people’s donations and selling them on to make a profit. By buying second hand through charity shops you can sleep soundly in the knowledge that your money is going to a good cause and not lining the pockets of a multi-million dollar corporation.

4. You’ll be saving waste from landfill
Every year the US produces 400 million tonnes of garbage and every last piece of it requires landfill space. Buy buying second hand and giving used items a second chance of life your actions can help to reduce this horrific figure.

5. You could find some big brand names
When buying second hand a whole new world of designer names becomes affordable and available, enabling you to have the style you want on the budget you have. Many second-hand shops sell designer items at just a fraction of their original retail price helping you to grab a bargain.

6. You may be inspired to recycle
Once you realize the benefits of the second-hand market you may also find yourself wanting to contribute to it yourself by donating any clothes you no longer wear or household items you no longer use. This recycling once again saves these items from ending up in landfill whilst also helping local charities to raise funds and supporting others who wish to spend less in the local community.
