What is Sustainable Energy?

Tuesday, January 28, 2020

Sustainable energy is being talked about a lot these days, not just as a way to take better care of this planet, but also as a solution that could even save money over the long run (solar energy especially). The benefits of sustainable energy are very important. This type of energy can reduce pollution and make our country less reliant on foreign oil.

According to Douglas Healy, 45% of the country’s gas fields are in the Mid-West so this is an area that’s critical to supply the country with power. This area of the country already contains a lot of our nuclear power generation and electricity plants. If our country can completely change over to using sustainable power sources there won’t be any more need for coal-power or nuclear power. We may be a bit of a way away from that but it’s still important to know that the possibility is out there and those in politics are wanting to move that way as well.

But why is sustainable energy so much better than something like coal? Well, this has been taking a toll on our health and the environment. That’s why we’ve been switching in some areas to solar power, wind power, and natural gas. And overall, humanity is really facing a lot of challenges with air pollution and how it affects our health. Of course, if it affects our health in a negative way, it’s also affecting the world as a whole by destroying the environment. And while we may live out our current lifetimes okay, the people of our future will not have any great promises ahead of them so it’s important to look into things like sustainable energy.

It seems that providing sustainable energy is one of the biggest challenges we all face. Sadly there are people in other countries that don’t have access to electricity and have to use dirty fuels for cooking. The burning of this fuel can kill people. So while we try to survive we actually are doing the opposite. And greenhouse gas emissions are another thing of interest. Human-caused greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation and the use of energy in manufacturing and construction. This may seem daunting but it’s important to know what we’re up against.

So again, what are the sources of renewable energy? Well, there’s solar power which is set up to turn light into electrical current. There’s also solar heating which collects the light and can generate heat for water and inside our homes. Wind power is usually found on turbine farms. The wind is used to create energy. There is also hydropower which has been used for the last few decades. Water is used to create energy.

So going back to what Douglas Healy said, we do have a lot to look forward to especially in the Mid-West and if we can get access to some of the more sustainable energy it’s going to be better for us as human beings and our country and planet. You should try to stay as informed as possible on this topic since it will most likely affect your future at some point.
