A smooth morning routine can set the tone for your entire day. Especially with the chaos going on in the world around you, a morning routine can set you up to deal with what the day holds. But what does a smooth morning routine look like? Well, let's take a look.
Wake Up Earlier Than You Need To
This allows you to have extra time. There's less of a chance of rushing around and trying to remember all the things you need to do before you start your day.
Be Present
Instead of laying in bed and scrolling through your phone (which is a huge time sucker), keep the phone away and focus on what you need to do.
Eat or Drink
The first thing I do after brushing my teeth is I head to the kitchen, make my coffee and grab my breakfast. Then I sit and be present when I eat and drink. I don't scroll through my phone or turn on the TV. I sit in silence and allow myself to wake up as I nourish myself with breakfast.
Complete Your Morning Tasks
After I'm done eating, I do my little morning tasks every single day. I do this so much that it's second nature and the tasks are embedded in my brain. If you're just starting out, a little to do list hanging on the fridge will help you get going and after a week or two it'll become more like second nature. The tasks can be anything like getting dressed, feeding your pets, making your bed, rinsing your breakfast dishes off before putting in the dishwasher, meditating, yoga, or a morning walk. Not only are these tasks practical, but they help you start the day off productive and with a sense of accomplishment.
Take a Break
Before jumping into your work day or any big projects if it's a weekend, take a break. Sit in silence, journal, stare out the window, interact with your pets or family members. Let yourself decompress just a bit before really starting the rest of your day. Mindful activity like this which turns out to be mindless since you can just be present and let your brain rest and this allows you to reset mentally before proceeding with the rest of your to do list.
A morning routine is very important and it will look different for everyone based on a person's needs and what their responsibilities are everyday. Choose one that works for you, plan it out, write it down, and use your to do list for it during the first couple of weeks. Once it becomes second nature, you'll really notice the reward.
I fall victim to the time suck of phone scrolling from bed FAR too often. I could change that one thing about my morning and probably find myself an extra 30 minutes for walking the dogs and eating food BEFORE work. My morning routine could use a little work, haha.
