Essential Steps to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Tuesday, February 1, 2022

If you live in a location where hurricanes occur, it's always important to be prepared. Long-time residents are usually pretty savvy when it comes to being ready for storms that come their way, but anyone visiting or new to the area can get a shock when they realize what it's really like. You don't want to be underprepared and have to deal with a hurricane without being ready for it. There are multiple steps that you should be taking if you want to ensure a hurricane doesn't cause damage to your home and even put your life in danger.

Secure Your Property

Protecting your property is one of the things that you'll want to do when you're preparing for hurricanes. Storms can cause a lot of damage and if you don't protect your home's exterior, you could end up dealing with problems inside too. If you live somewhere with a high chance of hurricanes, installing impact windows and storm doors is the smart thing to do. There are other steps that you can take for extra security, such as removing unstable branches from trees outside your home and removing or securing any outdoor furniture to make sure it won't move in a storm.

Stock Up on Emergency Supplies

Sometimes when a hurricane is on its way, you need to be prepared to hunker down and wait it out. Having plenty of emergency supplies on hand will help you to have all that you need to survive until you're able to emerge again. Non-perishable foods are always useful to have on hand, so stock up on canned and dried goods. It's also useful to have a range of supplies for survival in case you lose power, such as blankets and flashlights. A first aid kit will always come in handy too, ensuring you can treat any minor injuries.

Check Your Insurance

If a hurricane damages your home, you don't want to find out after the fact that your insurance doesn't cover it. If you know that hurricane season is about to start or there's a hurricane on its way, you should check your home insurance policy to make sure you're adequately covered. It's also useful to check insurance policies for anything else that you might want to protect, be it your car, your boat, or your business. If you can't find your policy documents, get in touch with your insurance provider.

Plan for Evacuation

There are some occasions when you might need to evacuate your home during a hurricane, especially if you live on the coast or in a mobile home. Having a plan in place will allow you to leave quickly and make sure you have everything with you and that your home is as secure as possible. It's also a good idea to make sure you have a good way of receiving updates about any storms. You'll want to know if there is an order to evacuate or if the storm is worse than predicted.

Get ready for hurricane season and you'll be prepared for whatever it might bring your way.
