If you go on any interior design Facebook groups, subreddits, forums, or anything involving home design, you’re going to notice that there’s a big push for using AI. Which, honestly, makes sense, because you can upload a picture of your bedroom, house, living room, you name it, give the AI a prompt, and it immediately gives you ideas on the potential of what you could have. Why hire an interior designer when you have AI, right?
Well, that can be debated here, but one big problem that’s happening is that people are trying to design the exterior of their homes based on what AI shows them. But what’s the big deal there? Well, some things can go wrong, and here’s what you could potentially expect!
AI Doesn’t Know What the House has Been Through
Well, keep in mind here that a house has history, and the exterior tells it. So, there’s sun exposure, wind patterns, ice, humidity, salty air near coasts, older repairs, past water issues, and even tree coverage; all of that affects what’s smart to install and what’s going to age badly.
But AI doesn’t know if a wall gets blasted by afternoon sun, if the area gets hail every other year, or if the existing materials have moisture issues hiding underneath. It’s looking at a photo like it’s a blank canvas, and a real house is not a blank canvas. It’s a living structure that reacts to its environment, and it’ll keep reacting long after the “design” looks cute on a screen.

AI Can’t Replace a Professional Eye
So, interior designers were mentioned above, but in general, for whatever reason, there’s this push that AI can and will replace professionals. Thankfully, it’s not actually the case, and hopefully it stays that way. But in general, professionals have the expertise and the eye that literally AI will never be able to have. Besides, a good exterior professional isn’t just picking colors. They’re thinking about proportions, balance, durability, installation realities, and what makes sense for the style of the home and the neighborhood. They also understand what looks good in real lighting, with real materials, on a real street.
So that’s why talking to a pro when planning something like house siding replacement, you need to actually listen to their recommendation because they’re going to know what they’re talking about. And again, they’re going to consider factors that AI can’t like the local climate, your budget, and so on. Basically, you shouldn’t be getting “seduced” by a mockup from a screen, because it doesn’t tell the story that the professional can give about the house and its needs. That especially needs to be hammered down here.

AI Doesn’t Understand Budget in a Realistic Way
AI tools are great at making everything look “upgraded.” They aren’t really all that great at explaining what that upgrade costs. Sure, if you want new window treatments, have at it; it can help with that. But something more serious? Probably not. Like, a concept might include new siding, new trim, new gutters, new lighting, new railings, and landscaping changes, like it’s no big deal. But all these little concepts are just going to make a person question how they can even afford it.
